Are you talking with your teen about sexting? If not, you should. Now. Teens enjoy the privacy and freedom that cell phones give them from their parents. But when they use that freedom and their cell phones to explore their budding sexuality, its easy to understand why 70% of teens report sending or receiving sexually explicit texts or emails. Its modern day flirting and it can have serious consequences. Currently when teens engage in sexting, the sending or posting of nude or partially nude images of minors, the law considers it child pornography. That could mean a host of consequences. Besides the humiliation and stress, teens may be required to register as a sex offender. College applications, participation in school sports, and future job prospects are also at risk. Parenting Tips: Agree to a code of ethics for technology use. For example, no sexting and no posting/sending pictures you wouldnt want adults to see. Consider taking their phone at a designated time each evening and returning it in the morning. Ask if they have ever received a sexual message/image on their phone and if they think its okay. Follow up with a discussion about consequences and how many people they think a sext reaches. Remind your teen that content on a cell phone isnt private and even deleted texts can be retrieved. Help your teen avoid the potential life consequences of sexting by learning more about the issue and talking about it before they put themselves in a compromising position. Ever wonder how heavy is that firefighting equipment? How easy (or not) it is to control that hose of high-pressured water? How small do people look from the top of that tall ladder? The Longmont firefighters and department staff invite you into our fire stations, onto our fire engines and out to our fire training center to see for yourself! The 3rd Longmont Citizens Fire Academy will be held in Spring of 2013. The seven week program will take place one night a week from 6:00 to 9:00 pm at each of Longmonts six fire stations and also includes a Saturday all hands-on firefighter experience. Participants will be learning about specialty operations such as search and rescue, hazmat, and EMS services as well as proactive operations like fire prevention and safety education. For more information on how to participate or to download an application, visit www.ci.longmont.co.us/fire Fire Safety/ Education, email stephanie.thai@ci.longmont.co.us or call (303) 651-8432.
The Longmont Police Department is seeking applicants who are interested in taking a more active role in improving the quality of life in our community. Participants will receive instruction on traffic laws, victims rights, domestic violence, criminal investigations, including a mock crime scene where participants are the detectives, computer crimes, SWAT techniques and officer safety. Participants can spend eight hours on patrol with a uniformed officer. This course will not qualify residents to become police officers. It will, however, enhance their knowledge of the Longmont Police Department and how it serves the community. Applications can be found on the City of Longmonts website, www.ci.longmont.co.us/police/community/cpa.htm or may be picked up in the Detective Division, upstairs in the Safety and Justice Center. Call 303-651-8523 for more details about this opportunity.

The Longmont Outdoor Emergency Warning System is tested on the first Monday of each month at 10am, April through August.
The Outdoor Emergency Warning System (OEWS) consists of a series of public address speakers installed on top of poles located throughout the city. Other than for testing, the system will only be used to notify the community when immediate action should be taken. The sirens are OUTDOOR warning sirens and are designed to be heard OUTDOORS but you may hear a siren inside if you are near a siren location. The system is radio controlled by the Longmont Emergency Communications Center and operates on solar charged batteries. The system remains functional even in the event of a power failure or when phone lines are down. If you hear the sirens, and it is not the first Monday of the month at 10am, seek shelter immediately and tune in to local media for detailed information. Any local television station and 850 KOA (AM) radio are good choices. Please DO NOT CALL 911 following an OEWS activation unless you have an emergency. During disaster situations, it is critical to keep the 911 lines available for citizens who require immediate assistance. For more information about emergency preparedness in Longmont, please call the City of Longmont, Office of Emergency Management at (303) 651-8438 or contact us by email donna.platt@ci.longmont.co.us

When snow storms hit Colorado, the Longmont Public Works team is ready to clear the streets. Life doesnt stop just because it snows. Keeping roads plowed so that residents can get to work or school or to the grocery store is extremely important. Its also important to keep roads passable for deliveries, mail and emergency services. Thats why Longmont has created a three-phase snow and ice plan that focuses on clearing major streets when storms hit. In most cases, this also involves clearing collector and arterial streets. Phase 1: Preparation: During the off season, snow removal equipment is inspected and prepared for the snow season. Additionally, snow removal policies and procedures are reviewed and refined so they are efficient and effective. When a snow and ice event is forecast, the management team develops a deployment strategy that includes establishing work schedules and allocating equipment. A new approach this year includes anti-icing work on targeted roadways that should melt snow and ice more quickly and inhibit the accumulation of ice.
Phase 2: Mitigation: This is the fighting the storm phase where we see trucks plowing and sanding streets. Depending on the severity of the storm, drivers might rotate shifts to provide 24-hour snow removal. In Longmont, all streets designated in the snow and ice plan generally receive the same priority. However, in extreme cases, the work could involve concentrating on the major or arterial roadways designated as loop routes. A new step this year in the mitigation process is pre-wetting the granular material used to de-ice on some routes. Wetting the material with a chloride solution activates the granular material quickly to promote melting and allows it to stick to the roadways more effectively. This technique should be particularly effective between 15 and 32 degree. Phase 3: Restoration: This phase consists of crews clearing more snow from streets in order to widen the travel lanes, clearing turn lanes and removing snow in certain problem areas. Deployment of snow and ice teams depends on the current and predicted weather conditions and is categorized into four levels. These levels range from minor plowing and sanding to hiring contractors to assist, to declaring an emergency. These levels are more fully explained in the Longmont Snow and Ice Plan that is available online at www. ci.longmont.co.us/public_works/streets/snow_removal.htm. For more information contact the Call Center at 303-651-8416.
