innipeg-based Inner CityRenovation (ICR) does renova-tion and construction work onrundown inner city residential and com-mercial buildings, with the aim of revital-izing the area.
As part of its mission, thecompany employs and trains low-incomeresidents of the inner city. ICR is a for-profit company that was created by fivenot-for-profit joint venture partners: NorthEnd Housing Project (NEHP), WinnipegPartners in Housing (WPH), SpenceNeighbourhood Association (SNA), WestBroadway Development Corporation(WBDC), and Community OwnershipSolutions (COS). ICR has completed over50 residential and commercial projectssince opening its doors in August 2002.
Because ICR hires a number of employees who havefew skills and little job experience, managers must teachthe employees how to perform the role of employee.Managers must also teach employees about teamworkand leadership while working side by side with them onconstruction projects. Behaviour refers to what people do in the organization, how they per-form, and what their attitudes are. Because the organizations studied are often businessorganizations, OB is frequently applied to address workplace issues such as absenteeism,turnover, productivity, motivation, working in groups, and job satisfaction. Managersoften apply the knowledge gained from OB research to help them manage their organ-izations more effectively.
