HOW I LIVEUNITED?
My name is Dr. Clark Kent. I have been volunteering some of mytime with the Friendship MedicalClinic. The work I do at the clinicis more rewarding than any work Ihave ever done because it is a freeclinic for the uninsured, lowincome adults needing medicalassistance. There is a couple,Alice and Jeff, who have been patients of the clinic for the pastfew years.Alice and Jeff have beenhappily married for the past 30years. They both are employedfull-time and Jeff works two jobsso they have sufficient income toraise their two dependent grand-children who live with them. Boththeir incomes total below the poverty guidelines set by our gov-ernment for a family of four. Aliceknew that her health was begin-ning to weaken and she needed tofind a resource that her familycould afford.She heard about theFriendship Medical Clinic and wasable to receive services because of her income and age requirements.After her first visit and review of her lab results, I diagnosed her with osteoarthritis, hypothyroiddisorder and age-related hormonal problems. Her conditions are allmanaged and monitored throughthe use of lab tests, medicationsand checkups. Jeff began comingto the clinic after Alice becameconcerned that he had not had acheckup in over a year.After hischeckup, I diagnosed him withdiabetes and hypertension. Henow has periodic labs and takesmedications, which are both pro-vided by the clinic. They are theideal patients: getting lab work done when asked, pick up medica-tions each month and take as pre-scribed and never miss their appointments.Both have healthconditions, if left untreated, wouldcomprise their health and make itdifficult for them to lead thehealthy,busy,productive livesthey are currently living.Becauseof their willingness, positive atti-tude and compliance, the clinic isable to provide the best qualitycare to extremely deserving indi-viduals. Loggerhead SeaTurtle Nesting 7thHighest YearOnRecord
Loggerhead sea turtle nesting inSouth Carolina closed as the sev-enth highest year on record since1980. The 2008 state estimate is4,500 nests.However, while the 2008 nest-ing season was productive, it didnot reverse the long-term decliningtrend.The South Carolina MarineTurtle Conservation Program began in 1977 with beach manage-ment research. The program further developed in the early 1980s withformation of the nest protectionand stranding volunteer networksalong the coast of South Carolina.Today, the program encompassesresearch, management, monitoringand education within the local,regional and international commu-nities. Find out more at:www.dnr.sc.gov/seaturtle/index.htm.The 2008 season for monitoringsea turtles also included oneKemp's ridley, five leatherbacksand one green sea turtle nest. TheKemp's ridley nest was the secondnest on record in South Carolinaand was located about 2 miles fromthe first ridley nest laid in 1992.The temporal pattern of theleatherback nests indicates that thiswas one female that nested at leastfive times along South Carolina'scoast.Strandings in 2008 (118) weregreater than 2007 (92), but not dif-ferent from the 10-year mean of 133. Of these 118, 18 turtles strand-ed alive (two were released, fiveare undergoing care at the SouthCarolina Aquarium, and 11 diedshortly after stranding).In 2008, eight sea turtles wereadmitted to the South CarolinaAquarium's Turtle Hospital. Thespecies include two Kemp's rid-leys, four loggerheads and twogreens, and the injuries include par-tial drowning, boat strikes andcold-stunning. The Nov. 24, 2008,arrival of four cold-stunned sea tur-tles from North Carolina brings the patient count to an all time high of 12. With 12 sea turtles representingthree different species, this is agreat time to visit the Aquariumand take a hospital tour. The Conway National Bank hasrecognized three of its employeesfor their service records:Marsha Jordan and JennieHyman are both being recognizedfor 30 years of continued service tothe bank, CNB officials haveannounced.Anative of Horry County,Jordan is a graduate of Aynor HighSchool. She is a banking officer and supervisor of loan operations atthe operations and administrationcenter in Conway.Hyman, who was born inConway, is a graduate of ConwayHigh School and the University of South Carolina-Coastal. She is a banking officer and supervisor of the savings department at the oper-ations and administration center inConway.Karen Martin has been withCNB for ten years. Anative of Hillsville, Virginia, Martin is agraduate of Carroll County HighSchool and Wytheville CommunityCollege. She is a senior customer service representative at the MyrtleBeach office and lives in MyrtleBeach.The Conway National Bank wasfounded in 1903 and has 14 officesin Horry and Georgetown counties.

Steven E. Thomas has beenappointed Assistant City Manager for the City of North MyrtleBeach. Mr. Thomas began work-ing with the City on Jan. 13.As the assistant city manager,Mr. Thomas will supervise theHuman Resources and SupportServices Divisions as well as work closely with the city manager, citycouncil and staff. He also willoversee the City’s risk manager and grants administrator.“I have always beenimpressed with Steve’s knowl-edge and his desire to work in public administration,” said North Myrtle Beach CityManager John Smithson. “I amlooking forward to his experi-ence and his assistance as theCity continues to progress anddevelop.”Thomas graduated from NorthMyrtle Beach High School in1975 and then received a Bachelor of Arts in History from theUniversity of North Carolina inChapel Hill. He also received aMaster of Public Administrationfrom the College of Charleston/USC program in 1996.Thomas has worked as the rev-enue director for the City of NorthMyrtle Beach, town administrator in Irmo, S.C., finance director of Clinton, S.C., and the city admin-istrator of Conway andGeorgetown. He is a member of the International City Manager’sAssociation and lives with hiswife Janet and his children inConway, S.C.
