th
century goldsmith, known by thename Richard Joyce. He was put into the prison during one his journey when he wasgoing to West Indies from Algeria. During this event, he was only a fisherman. The pirates sold him as a slave and hence, this prevented him from uniting with his lady lovewho lived in Claddagh, and Irish village. It was during this period of slavery that helearned the art of working upon gold. He made a decision of making a special kind of ring expressing his love towards her lady love. He wanted to do this because he was notsure of seeing her again. It was this endeavor that led to the formulation of Claddaghrings.Richard Joyce was finally released and allowed to go back to his Irish village. He wasdelighted to find out that his lady was still waiting for him. He presented the ring that hehad prepared as a token of his love.
