RAGGED MOUNTAIN RESERVIOR
EXPANSION CONCEPT
Basic Information

Did you know the following facts about
expanding the Ragged Mountain
Reservoir?

FACT: Currently 514 million gallons of water is

stored with approximately 463 MG considered
usable; raising the pool elevation 45-feet will
supply the entire 9.9 deficit.

FACT: Raising the pool elevation 45-feet
provides an additional 1,862 MG usable water.
FACT: Increasing the usable water of the

reservoir could be accomplished by raising the
existing lower dam or by constructing a new
dam just downstream of the existing dam.

FACT: To reduce the time to refill the reservoir,

transfer of water from Sugar Hollow Reservoir
and from a withdrawal pump station on the
Mechums River could be used.

FACT: The proposed 45-foot increase would not
pose a potential flooding hazard to the I-64
corridor, even for extreme flood events.
FACT: The Ragged Mountain Natural Area
contains Approximately 980 acres, most of
which is forested.
FACT: Most trails that are lost due to raising

the pool elevation could be replaced in some form and likely would be increased due to the increase in surface area of the reservoir.

FACT: Total estimated wetlands impacted are
0.1 acres, with total wetland mitigation 0.2
acres.
FACT: Total estimated linear feet of steams

impacted are 9,300, with an estimated 33,261
linear feet of stream channel mitigation
required.

FACT: Total estimated project cost is
$59,524,000.
FACT: The average cost per gallon per day for
a 9.9 MGD safe yield related to this project is:
$6.01.
