STBSeries Self-CheckingOptical Touch Buttons
When properly installed, a two-hand-control system using STBTouch Buttons as the actuating devices provides protection only forthe hands of the machine operator. It may be necessary to install other guarding devices, such as safety light screens and/or hardguards, to protect personnel from hazardous machinery.
Failure to install appropriate point-of-operation guards on hazardousmachinery can result in a dangerous condition which could lead to serious injury or death.
STB Touch Button Description
STB Self-Checking Optical Touch Buttons are touch-activated photoelectric devicesdesigned to replace capacitive touch switches and mechanical push buttons. Theiroutputs activate while a finger is in the “touch area” (yoke) of the switch, interrupting the button’s infrared sensing beam.Banner STB Series buttons are ergonomically designed to eliminate the hand, wrist, and arm stresses associated with mechanical push buttons. They require absolutelyno physical pressure to operate. LED indicators light when power is on and outputsare activated. All models are immune to EMI, RFI, and ambient light interference. STBs have eithera black polysulfone or red Lexan
upper housing (depending on model) and yellowPBT base. Environmental considerations for use of the two types differ; seespecifications. The 30 mm threaded base on all models provides easy mounting andeasy retrofitting into existing applications.STB Self-Checking Optical Touch Buttons are identical in fit, form and function withthe proven and popular OTB Series buttons. The internal design of the new buttons, however, based on dual microcontrollers, allows the hookup to a Banner DUO-TOUCH SGTwo-Hand-Control Safety Module, or other two-hand-control designed tomeet Type IIIC requirements per EN 574 (requiring 1 normally open and 1 normallyclosed contact per input channel). The major advantage to these second-generation touch buttons is that themicrocontrollers perform a continuous self-check. The emitter is continuouslypulsed, and receiver response is checked accordingly by the microcontrollers. STBSeries Touch Buttons are designed to immediately detect any internal componentfailure, go into a lockout mode, and indicate the failure with a flashing green FaultLED.The STB outputs, however, are not monitored by the STBcircuitry, and there is noexternal device monitoring feedback. This output monitoring must be done with anexternal device, such as a Type IIIC Two-Hand-Control module.

The polypropylene materialis capable of absorbing high impact (even at low temperatures) and is highlyresistant to abrasion and to damage by most chemicals.
