Work on Maungaturoto\u2019s vital wastewater treatment
upgrade is continuing to make good progress and the
project is expected to remain on schedule provided
the weather co-operates.

Kaipara based Harrison Contracting, which has the
contract for the civil component of the works, moved
on site just before Labour Weekend 2008 and has
continued to make good progress over the Christmas
period.

Excavation of a 600m3 storage pond to enable the
treated wastewater to be discharged with the tidal
flow has begun. This will be excavated and lined.

At the same time, the bund around the existing oxida-
tion pond has been extended and raised to reduce
the risk of overflow and/or flooding during major storm
events.

The bund wall will have a layer of metal on the top so that maintenance and emergency vehicles can have all weather access around the oxidation pond.

Material being excavated from the storage pond is
being used to build the bund wall as this reduces the
volume of material that needs to be carted away and
dumped. As much material will be reused within the
construction as possible for fill purposes. The re-
mainder will be dumped off-site.

Northpower has installed the new electricity supply to
the site, which is due to be connected at the end of
January.

The membrane filtration plant at the heart of the up-
grade is being built by Canadian Pacific Limited and
is nearing completion prior to delivery to the site. It is
hoped that this can be commissioned late in Febru-
ary, following which it will be tested for two months.
