 MINUTES – School Council Meeting 
St. Joseph’s High SchoolNovember 18th, 2008Sr. Clare Gallagher Library
 Attendees:
 
Colin Slight, Mark Searson, Sue McSheffrey, Catherine Helferty, Chris Naismith, Karina Dewar and Carolyn Hass.
 Special Guest:
Katie Milosek – Chaplain and Teacher 
Opening Prayer:
Mark Searson introduced the prayer – Desiderata. 
 Minutes:
Minutes of the October 21st meeting were reviewed by members andapproved by Colin Slight and seconded by Sue McSheffrey.

The haunted house on October 31
st
was successful. The Student Council raised $288.10.The Spirit Committee had a Costume Contest and Pumpkin Carving Contest.- Mrs. Hass’ TAG had their pizza lunch prize from the Food Drive on Tuesday, November 11
th
.- Student Council Constitution changes: 2 Prime Ministers changed to 1 Prime Minister,1 Spirit Minister to 2 Spirit Ministers, the people running for Environment Minister  positions will submit writings on their plans for the coming year and will be appointed bythe student council.- The Jaguar Hunt has begun and should finish before Christmas holidays.- We have been looking into appointing athletics ministers and the Sports Teachers havecome up with an Athletics Committee. At least 2 members of their committee will beattending our student and executive council meetings from now on.- On November 17
th
, there was a MADD presentation in the gym. The bishop came on November 17
th
for it’s official opening and to bless the new wing.- This year’s Operation Christmas Child has started.- Coffee house will be on Thursday, November 20
th
.- Semi-Formal Dance with a Royal Masquerade theme will be Friday, November 21
st
.- Party Cakes hosted one birthday party in the month of November.-"Speak Up" (Program about Education organized by the Minister of Education for Ontario) contacted our school and one student is responding to it- Ms. Anne Smith, RCCDSB Trustee sent a donation of $100.00 to the Student Council.- Student Council has been planning a mass. Father Terry Siroski from Douglas iscoming to say it in our gym on December 2

. The Student Council is also looking intohaving our new chaplain appoint a Spiritual Minister to add to our council so that thecouncil truly covers all of the areas of our school.

Colin received an information package concerning the Premier’s Awardsfor Teaching Excellence. The deadline for applications is January 31
st
,2009. Members were given the information brochure and were asked tothink about possible candidates. Discussion will continue during theJanuary meeting.
Healthy Schools Recognition ProgramThis is an opportunity to recognize the school in terms of health choicesand initiatives. The application deadline is April 16
th
, 2009.Sue McSheffrey volunteered to review the correspondence and give areport at the January meeting.
The local Health Unit sent various handouts: Families Rule / PromotingHealthy People in a Healthy Environment / and Parent Advisory.
Guest Speaker: Katie Milosek 
Ms. Milosek was introduced to Council. She was the successful applicant for theChaplain position at St. Joseph’s High School. She is currently the senior ReligionTeacher at the school and began her Chaplain duties on November 10
th
, 2008. She is veryexcited about her position and looks forward to working with the St. Joseph’sCommunity.

We are thrilled to introduce Katie Milosek as our new Chaplain.His Excellency Bishop Mulhall
was here yesterday for the Opening Blessingof or new wing. Thank you to Colin and Sue for representing SchoolCouncil.
We have NET retreats set up for our students and Katie is working on setting upreconciliation dates for Advent.Rev. Sirosky will be here to celebrate an Advent mass on Tuesday, December 2

Thank you again for the support of installing blinds in
the hallway windows of ourclassrooms. This order has been made and the blinds are now beingmade. This will be a big help in our lock down procedures.
Chris Naismith has brought forward the idea of installing PAD device in the school. Ihave approached th
e Board about this idea and we are investigating thispossibility.
