The entire purpose of our existence is to overcome our negative habits. Arbus, Diane Love involves a peculiar unfathomable combination of understanding and misunderstanding. Wesson, Robert

Ideology carries satisfactions, even if it is not totally credible. Symbols carry much weight; people like to have answers to the big questions, whether the answers help them materially or not....Whatever the psychological power of ideology, its specific content and ideas are much less Significant than they are frequently made to seem.... An ideological movement soon finds that Persuasion alone does not suffice, and it must offer firmer reasons for obedience.

The image of the world becomes an ideology if it creates in the mind of the person holding it a role For himself which he values highly.... To create a role, however, an ideology must create a drama. The first essential characteristic of an ideology is then an interpretation of history sufficiently dramatic and convincing so that the individual feels that he can identify with it and which in turn can give the individual a role in the drama it portrays.

Religion is a system of language and practice that organizes the world in terms of what is deemed sacred.
Quentin Tarantino

As time transcends, you sit alone in your room. You ask yourself... Exactly why was I put here on earth? You snicker a little bit, pondering the thought. The more you think about, the less comprehensible it becomes. It is imperative that you understand, there are infinite numbers of people that were put on the Earth for the same reason. To live. People ask, Whats the meaning of life? I personally, believe there is no meaning of life. In fact, I wouldnt be surprised if everything was just in imaginary illusion, processed deeply in our barren minds. If there is a meaning of life, it was intended to be left unknown. Left in the shadow, traceless. Or is it there to drive philosophers and human beings insane, yearning for that grateful answer.
Charles Dunoyer

During the French Revolution, the State exercised over the manufacturing industry the most unlimited and arbitrary jurisdiction. It disposed without scruple of the resources of manufacturers; it decided who would be allowed to work, what things it should be permitted to make, what materials should be employed, what processes followed, what forms should be given to productions. It was not enough to do well, to do better; it was necessary to do according to the rules.

Life allows itself to be permeated by religion politics does not. A life that was to be permeated by religion would no longer know politics. Only the permeation of life with the yeast of the religious can one day deliver us from the serpent of politics that holds us ensnared with its cold coils.

You can't defend the indefensible - anything you say sounds self-serving and hypocritical.

Flugel, J.C. The artist can neither be too distant because the myth distorts reality, nor too close to it, for then its uninteresting and irrelvant details also distort the essential outline which gives us the quintessence of reality. We have to face the fact that for many adults, and for still more children, the frustrations and conflicts aroused by reality. are more often than can be born, and that at least an occasional retreat from reality into some form of artistic thinking is almost inevitable, even if only for the purpose of backtracking to better leap forward. Christine L. Nystrom

George Paloczi-Horvath

They fell in love so deeply with the generation of tomorrow, with the mankind to come, that there was hardly any love left for those who happened to live in today's world. They were brought up in a Manner which only filled their hearts with cold and abstract feelings, and they thought that the generation of the day after tomorrow could be happy even if it was conceived in suspicion and fear.

Gilda Radner

I wanted a perfect ending. Now I have learned the hard way that some poems do not rhyme, and some stories do not have a clear beginning middle and end. Hans Eysenck

I always felt that a scientist owes the world only one thing, and that is the truth as he sees it. If the truth contradicts deeply held beliefs, that is too bad. Tact and diplomacy are fine in international relations, in politics, perhaps even in business; in science only one thing matters, and that is the facts.

Language deals in successive particulars; it expresses bit by bit what must be brought home to the soul at a single glance if it is to affect us profoundly. Words make the infinite finite. Symbols carry the spirit beyond the finite world of becoming into the realm of infinite being.

James Q. Wilson

Mankinds moral sense is not a strong beacon light, radiating outward to illuminate in sharp outline all that it touches. It is, rather, a small candle

Pamuk, Orhan

The question we writers are asked most often, the favorite question, is: Why do you write? I write because I have an innate need to write. I write because I cant do normal work as other people do. I write because I want to read books like the ones I write. I write because I am angry at everyone. I write because I love sitting in a room all day writing. I write because I can partake of real life only by changing it. I write because I want others, the whole world, to know what sort of life we lived, and continue to live, in Istanbul, in Turkey. I write because I love the smell of paper, pen, and ink. I write because I believe in literature, in the art of the novel, more than I believe in anything else. I write because it is a habit, a passion. I write because I am afraid of being forgotten. I write because I like the glory and interest that writing brings. I write to be alone. Perhaps I write because I hope to understand why I am so very, very angry at everyone. I write because I like to be read. I write because once I have begun a novel, an essay, a page I want to finish it. I write because everyone expects me to write. I write because I have a childish belief in the immortality of libraries, and in the way my books sit on the shelf. I write because it is exciting to turn all lifes beauties and riches into words. I write not to tell a story but to compose a story. I write because I wish to escape from the foreboding that there is a place I must go butas in a dreamcant quite get to. I write because I have never managed to be happy. I write to be happy

Philip Slater

Change can take place only when liberal and radical pressures are both strong. Intelligent liberals have always recognized the debt they owe to radicals, whose existence permits liberals to push further than they would otherwise have dared, all the while posing as compromisers and mediators. Radicals, however, have been somewhat less sensible of their debt to liberals, partly because of the rather single-minded discipline radicals are almost forced to maintain, plagued as they always are by liberal backsliding and timidity on the one hand and various forms of selfdestructiveness and romantic posing on the other.... Liberal reforms and radical change are thus complementary rather than antagonistic. Together they make it possible continually to test the limits of what can be done. Liberals never know whether the door is unlocked because they are afraid to try it. Radicals, on the other hand, miss many opportunities for small advances because they are unwilling to settle for so little.

People think they can all be pop stars, high court judges, brilliant TV personalities or infinitely more competent heads of state without ever putting in the necessary work or having natural ability...What is wrong with everyone nowadays? Why do they all seem to think they are qualified to do things far beyond their technical capabilities? This is to do with the learning culture in schools as a consequence of a child-centered system which admits no failure...This is the result of social utopianism which believes humanity can be genetically and socially engineered to contradict the lessons of history.

Doubt, indeed, is the disease of this inquisitive, restless age. It is the price we pay for our advanced intelligence and civilization. It is the dim night of

Hundal, Sunny

Not much annoys me more than the stereotype that to be liberal is to be full of guilt. To be socially liberal, in my view, is to be more mindful of compassion and empathy for others.
N. S. Briefe

In our movement the two extremes come together: the Communists from the left and the officers and Students from the Right. These two have always been the most active elements, and it was the Greatest crime that they used to oppose each other in street fights. The Communists were the Idealists of Socialism.
Matthew Berry

Should we cover our heads and whimper because reality is not as we would have it? Beautiful lies are not superior to horrible truths, so why not hear the truth even when it is vulgar?

Jan Zamoiski

Rhetoric is nothing but reason well dressed and argument put in order.
E. L. Woodword

History itself touches only a small part of a nation's life. Most of the activities and sufferings of the people ... have been and will remain without written record.
Meyer, Frank S.

Communist theory is powerful not because it is true; most obviously it is not. It is powerful because It is believed. Each aspect may be intellectually weak enough on its own, but in the total theoretical Structure each strengthens the other and a unified view is created. Theories which, standing on their Own would be ludicrous take on the seeming luminosity of truth.

Ben Kingsley

Great drama deals with the struggle for people's selves. You see it on the screen. Everyone is involved with the struggle with their own soul, struggling for that soul and to possess that soul.

Progressive art can assist people to learn not only about the objective forces at work in the society in which they live, but also about the intensely social character of their interior lives. Ultimately, it can propel people toward social emancipation.

For liberalism, the individual is the end, and society the means. For fascism, society is the end, Individuals the means, and its whole life consists in using individuals as instruments for its social ends.
Kolakowski, Leszek

Marxism has been the great fantasy of our century. It was a dream offering the prospect of a society of perfect unity, in which all human aspirations would be fulfilled and all values reconciled.
Alexander Bain Prabhushri

Instinct is untaught ability. Religion is a bridge to the spiritual - but the spiritual lies beyond religion. Unfortunately, in seeking the spiritual we may become attached to the bridge rather than crossing over it.

Democracy is not an easy form of government, because it is never final; it is a living, changing organism, with a continuous shifting and adjusting of balance between individual freedom and general order.

Neil J. Kressel

When it comes to thinking, authoritarians abhor the unconventional, preferring instead to adhere Rigidly to whatever values prevail in their surroundings. Thus, they often find themselves idealizing the moral authorities of the ethnic, religious, or political groups to which they belong.

Irving, Edward

God's unchangeableness is the very foundation of desire and hope and activity in things religious as in things natural. The uniformity of nature's operations in the one, and the constancy of God's promises in the other, give aim and certainty to events.
Henry Sloane Coffin

God is to me that creative Force, behind and in the universe, who manifests Himself as energy, as life, as order, as beauty, as thought, as conscience, as love.
Irion, Mary Jean

Christianity was a great religion. It has been over for a hundred years now; whatever the twentieth century knows of it can be thought of as a lingering unreality preserved in the church. When something even so small as a light bulb goes out, the eyes for a moment still see it; and a sound after it is made will have, in the right places, an echo. So it is not at all strange that when something so huge as a world religion goes out, there remains for a century or more in certain places some notion that it is still there.
Douglas McManaman

Ideological thinking does not begin with the real in order to understand the natures of things, but Begins in the mind, that is, with the theoretical system through which the real is interpreted. It begins With an already constituted scheme, a ready-made epistemological superstructure a structure Through which certain data will be interpreted as significant while other data will remain relatively Meaningless.
Jules Renard

Our dream dashes itself against the great mystery like a wasp against a window pane. Less merciful than man, God never opens the window.

The writing of history reflects the interests, predilections, and even prejudices of a given generation.
J. L. Talmon

This is the curse of salvationist creeds: to be born out of the noblest impulses of man, and to Degenerate into weapons of tyranny. An exclusive creed cannot admit opposition. It is bound to feel Itself surrounded by innumerable enemies.... Political Messianism is bound to replace empirical Thinking and free criticism with reasoning by definition, based on a priori collective concepts which Must be accepted whatever the evidence of the senses.
John Andrew Rice

One ceases to be lonely only in recollection; perhaps that is why people read history.
Butler D. Shaffer

Every religion or cause grows out of a desire either to make ones own life more effortless, or to control and manipulate other people in order to enforce behavior in conformity with the expectations Of the true believers.
Joel Goldsmith

God is an experience and no one knows God until he has had that experience.
Hildegard Goos-Mayr

Generally speaking, the first nonviolent act is not fasting, but dialogue. The other side, the adversary, is recognized as a person; he is taken out of his anonymity and exists in his own right, for what he really is, a person. To engage someone in dialogue is to recognize him, have faith in him. At every step in the nonviolent struggle, at every level we try tirelessly to establish a dialogue, or reestablish it if it has broken down. When I say 'the other side,' that could be a group of persons or a government.

Hildegard Goos-Mayr
Roy P. Basler

To know the truth of history is to realize its ultimate myth and its inevitable ambiguity.
Jean Goss

All ideologies end up killing people. If you separate love from nonviolence you turn nonviolence into an ideology, a gimmick. Structures that are not inhabited by justice and love have no liberating or reconciling force, and are never sources of life.
George Jean Nathan

To speak of morals in art is to speak of legislature in sex. Art is the sex of the imagination.
James Harvey Robinson

In its amplest meaning History includes every trace and vestige of everything that man has done or thought since first he appeared on the earth.

People dont ask for facts in making up their minds. They would rather have one good, soul-satisfying emotion than a dozen facts.
Robert M. Price

"Heresy," by the way, simply means "choice." It came to mean "thought crime," implying it was blasphemy to presume to choose your own belief instead of swallowing what the bishops spoon-fed you.

A. F. Pollard

History, in a democratic age, tends to become a series of popular apologies, and is inclined to assume that the people can do no wrong.
Hermann Goering

Why, of course, the people don't want war. Why would some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best that he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece. Naturally, the common people don't want war; neither in Russia nor in England nor in America, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy or a fascist dictatorship or a Parliament or a Communist dictatorship. There is one difference. In a democracy, the people have some say in the matter through their elected representatives, and in the United States only Congress can declare wars. Oh, that is all well and good, but, voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the

bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country.
Sidney E. Mead

History, in brief, is an analysis of the past in order that we may understand the present and guide our conduct into the future.
Howard Gardner

405. While the public may need ultimately to rally around some kind of a central figure, the choice of a Specific leader is largely accidental. The leader who would succeed, then, is the one who best Senses and delivers what an audience already desires.

We consider the artist a special sort of person. It is more likely that each of us is a special sort of artist.
Judith Sklar

The reason that ideology has been represented so often as a type of religiosity is, of course, a Response to the terrifying fervor expressed by the number of modern mass-movements. It is the Emotional element of Nazism, communism and other revolutionary movements all over the world that Is so reminiscent of many of the old popular heresies.
Eric Berne

Each person designs his own life, freedom gives him the power to carry out his own designs, and power gives the freedom to interfere with the designs of others.

To change is to be vulnerable. And to be vulnerable is to be alive.

William Allingham

I always get back to the question, is it really necessary that men should

consume so much of their bodily and mental energies in the machinery of civilized life? The world seems to me to do much of its toil for that which is not in any sense bread. Again, does not the latent feeling that much of their striving is to no purpose tend to infuse large quantities of sham into men's work?''

Ernst Toller

The basis of fascism is a blind belief and a contempt for reason. Fascism exploits the fear of reason Which lives secretly in the conscious and subconscious minds of many people. Reason means Facing life and facts.
Gabriel Byrne

It was either Voltaire or Charlie Sheen who said, 'We are born alone. We live alone. We die alone. And anything in between that can give us the illusion that we're not, we cling to.'
Jean Guehenno

The highest form of purity is to be pure among the impure, in the world, at the head of a great newspaper or at the podium of an assembly it is to challenge men, sects, and parties, to conceive at every moment of what is possible and to undertake to do it, and yet to remain on the straight and narrow path. And that purity...is neither ineffective nor futile. There can be no doubt that the ends do not always justify the means.
Berle, Adolf

The artist does not illustrate science (but) he frequently responds to the same interests that a scientist does.

Michael Blain

Just as people can be talked into buying things they do not need, so the political leader can talk the Desire for revenge into people. The rhetoric of enemies is a potent means

John Berryman

The artist is extremely lucky who is presented with the worst possible ordeal which will not actually kill him. At that point, hes in business.

Stanislas Jean de Boufflers

Morality has need, that it may be well received, of the mask of fable and the charm of poetry: truth pleases less when it is naked; and it is the only virgin whom we best like to see a little clothed.
Alexander A. Bogomoletz

One must not lose desires. They are mighty stimulants to creativeness, to love and to long life. The important thing in science is not so much to obtain new facts as to discover new ways of thinking about them.

To seek after beauty as an end, is a wild goose chase, a will-o'-the-wisp, because it is to misunderstand the very nature of beauty, which is the normal condition of a thing being as it should be.
Kenneth R. Hoover

Imposing utopia though the state, or leaving its arrival to the voluntary action of self-interested Individuals, carries great hazards. Basic human rights are the first casualty of the statist method, and the loss of community values is frequently the result of the second.

Jane Hendrix

Not living in the present is a form of denial. It's easier to live in the past or future because then you don't have to be responsible for the present.

Barry E. Blood, Sr.

Man, in so far as he is not subject to natural forces, is free to work out his own destiny. The responsibility is his, and so is the opportunity.
Joshua Harris

Real love is always fated. It has been arranged before time. It is the most meticulously prepared of coincidences. And fate, of course, is simply a secular term for the will of God, and coincidence for His grace. When we hold back on life, life holds us back.

We tend to think of Utopians as being starry-eyed philosophers or wild-eyed reformers but there is a new breed of utopians afoot, threatening to rush down all the existing pathways and blind alleys Frequented since the days of Plato. Each small task of everyday life is part of the total harmony of the universe. In a better world, science teachers would teach creationism along with evolution as an exercise in critical thinking.

History in our kind of society is not a luxury but a necessity.

Giuseppe Peano In every science, after having analyzed the ideas, expressing the more

complicated by means of the more simple, one finds a certain number that

cannot be reduced among them, and that one can define no further. These are the primitive ideas of the science; it is necessary to acquire them through experience, or through induction; it is impossible to explain them by deduction.
Marlene Dietrich

I love quotations because it is a joy to find thoughts one might have, beautifully expressed with much authority by someone recognizably wiser than oneself.

White, Walter

Reality is a term for people who refuse to see things as they can be, so that they might be, instead seeing things as they are, and lazily assuming that's how they'll always be.
Vaclav Hlavaty

The farther we go, the more the ultimate explanation recedes from us, and all we have left is faith. We must apply our humble efforts to the construction of a more just and humane world. And I want to declare emphatically: Such a world is possible. To create this new society, we must present outstretched and friendly hands, without hatred and rancor, even as we show great determination and never waver in the defense of truth and justice. Because we know that we cannot sow seeds with clenched fists. To sow we must open our hands.

Adams, Phillip

Marx was wrong. Religion is not the opiate of the people. Opium suggests something soporific, numbing, dulling. Too often religion has been an aphrodisiac for horror, a Benzedrine for bestiality. At its best it has lifted spirits and raised spires. At its worst it has turned entire civilizations into cemeteries.

Claude Nicole

A truth which one has never heard causes the soul surprise at first, which touches it keenly; but when it is accustomed to it, it becomes very insensible there.

Abstract Art: A product of the untalented, sold by the unprincipled to the utterly bewildered.
Cage, John Platen

There is poetry as soon as we realize that we possess nothing. Man values life as a sacred jewel in such a way that he reveres him most who haughtily scorns it.

Bernard Cornwell

Anyone who claims to have an entirely clear conscience is almost certainly a bore.
Phillip Kitcher

Anxieties about ourselves endure. If our proper study is indeed the study of humankind, then it has seemed-and still seems-to many that the study is dangerous. Perhaps we shall find out that we were not what we took ourselves to be. But if the historical development of science has indeed sometimes pricked our vanity, it has not plunged us into an abyss of immorality. Arguably, it has liberated us from misconceptions, and thereby aided us in our moral progress. The theory of evolution explains to us what our ancestry has been. It does not explain away our worth. Why should we be afraid to learn more about what we are? Phillip Kitcher

The essence of all art is to have pleasure in giving pleasure.

Tzara, Tristan

Art is a private thing, the artist makes it for himself; a comprehensible work is the product of a journalist. We need works that are strong, straight, precise, and forever beyond understanding.

Dante Germino

To the ideologist, reality has at last bared her secrets and the world is waiting for conquest by those Who have the necessary knowledge that man himself is the ultimate creator of reality. Knowledge And power are joined in ideology in such a way that the only knowledge deserving of the name is that Which is instrumental to attaining power and dominion over the environment and, ultimately, over Man himself in his innermost being. Reality to ideological thought is something that needs to be made up rather than made out."

SOME philosophy has turned out to have no value, reached a dead-end and collapsed under its own weight. Some philosophy is just abstractions piled upon abstractions, and loses touch with reality, i.e., practical value. Some -but not all. But to say philosophy as a concept is over is absurd.
Hermann Ebbinghaus

Candice Bergen

People see you as an object, not as a person, and they project a set of expectations onto you. People who don't have it think beauty is a blessing, but actually it sets you apart.
Heraklietos of Ephesos

Whosoever wishes to know about the world must learn about it in its particular details. Knowledge is not intelligence. In searching for the truth be ready for the unexpected. Change alone is unchanging. The same road goes both up and down. The beginning of a circle is also its end. Not I, but the world says it: all is one. And yet everything comes in season.

Walter Schubart

In future generations, people will find difficulty in understanding how at one time generations existed who did not regard the idea of God as the highest concept of which man is capable, but who, on the contrary, were ashamed of it and considered the development of atheism a sign of progress in the emancipation of human thought.
Carol Shields

Every man gets a narrower and narrower field of knowledge in which he must be an expert in order to compete with other people. There are

chapters in every life which are seldom read and certainly not aloud.
H.J. Perkinson

Man stops growing when he ceases being critical, when he ignores or refuses to admit that what he Has created his knowledge, his social arrangements contain contradictions and adverse Consequences. The secret of the magic of life consists in using action in order to attain nonaction. One must not wish to leap over everything and penetrate directly.
Fred Hoyle

Religion is but a desperate attempt to find an escape from the truly dreadful situation in which we find ourselves. Here we are in this wholly fantastic universe with scarcely a clue as to whether our existence has any real significance. No wonder then that many people feel the need for some belief that gives them a sense of security, and no wonder that they become very angry with people like me who say that this is illusory.

Simon Vestdijk

The poetical intention, if concentrated enough, is already poetry, or rather is the essence of poetry, and is the only thing that lends meaning to the poetry. Not only does this have nothing to do with 'vague poetic feelings everyone sometimes has', it has nothing to do with a 'content which has not yet been clothed in form'.
David McBride

The ruins of peace are more difficult to repair than the ruins of war. A bridge is more quickly replaced, a house more quickly rebuilt, an orchard more quickly replanted than a brothel is erased. As for men, they replace each other on their own, and war kills fewer souls than peace does. There is not a single positive article against war...It is peace above all else which wages war against God.

The capacity for wonder has been called our most pregnant human faculty, for in it are born our art, our science, our religion. As liberty of thought is absolute, so is liberty of speech, which is inseparable from the liberty of thought. Liberty of speech, moreover, is essential not only for its own sake but for the sake of truth, which requires absolute liberty for the utterance of unpopular and even demonstrably

The truth is at the bottom of a well. You look in a well, and you see the sun or the moon, but if you jump in, theres no longer the sun or moon; theres the truth.

The metaphor of the melting pot is unfortunate and misleading. A more accurate analogy would be a salad bowl, for, though the salad is an entity, the lettuce can still be distinguished from the chicory, the tomatoes from the cabbage.

Utopians are often especially sensitive to the evils of the world and, craving certainty, purity, and completeness, firmly reject the evil as totally as possible, wishing to avoid any compromise with Them. They await a new world which is to come into being as an act of God, by a change in the Human spirit, by autonomous changes in economic conditions, or by a deep spontaneous social upheaval all beyond deliberate human control.

John M. Ludwig

Each person that has ever lived has had the same problem. They wanted to be remembered by everyone for what they were. To be forgotten is worse than death. People wanted to be remembered by other things than books and stories. But in the end that's all we can be remembered by. There's nothing you can do at this points but live. But when I'm to die I want to be remembered by one thing. I want people to say "He was the type of person that believed and saw the good in others even when they couldn't believe or see it in themselves." That is how I want to be remembered.
Denis de Rougemont

A myth is a story which describes and illustrates in dramatic form certain deep structures of reality.
John F. Post

The real drama in philosophy remains where it has always been, in pairing the rage for order with delight in near chaotic variety. And the highest challenge is to express the two entwined, to express them by a harmony of argument and metaphor, of logic and passion, so that we may understand and respond with all that is best in us.
Eugenie Scott

Science is a limited way of knowing, looking at just the natural world and natural causes. There are a lot of ways human beings understand the universe -- through literature, theology, aesthetics, art or music.

G.B. Caird

All history is an attempt to find pattern and meaning in a section of human experience, and every historian worthy of the name raises questions about man's ultimate destiny and the meaning of all history to which, as history, he can provide no answers. The answers belong to the realm of theology.

Luther P. Gerlach

The poets were not alone in sanctioning myths, for long before the poets the states and the lawmakers had sanctioned them as a useful expedient.... They needed to control the people by superstitious fears, and these cannot be aroused without myths and marvels. Johann Jakob Scheuchzer

Each truth sparkles with a light of its own, yet it always reflects some light upon another; a truth, while lighting another, springs from one, in order to penetrate another. The first truth is an abundant sense, from which all others are colored, and each particular truth, in its turn, resembles a great river that divides into an infinite number of rivulets.

Beliefs exist to correct reality, and to the extent that reality is or represents the truth, beliefs are Necessarily a variant of lies. Our need to believe becomes dominant precisely where our knowledge Of reality is either insufficient or unpleasant or both. No fact of cult life is more important, when it comes to successful indoctrination of new members, that its isolation. Anyone who enters the inner recesses of a cult soon realizes that what is being left behind is the world as we know it. A cult represents a compromise against a threatened psychotic loss of reality: one the one hand, it denies or losesan unbearable outer reality; on the other hand, it reinvents it in a manner that, (unlike with the psychotic), elicits considerable and comforting consensual validation.

In a world increasingly filled with complex choices and few corresponding certainties, it is Understandable that we search for security in absolutes. There is no shortage of movements, Groups, and systems, both religious and secular, that promulgate such absolutes. Science remains the author of our major problem, in its gift of tremendous power that has been terribly abused; but for the wise use of this power we need more, not less, of the objective dispassionate scientific spirit. If conservatives believe in original sin but not in redemption, then liberals believe in redemption but not in original sin. They are deficient in the tragic sense of life, which is why they tend to identify the source of the ills that beset us as not in ourselves, but in external impediments to human well-being: remove these external obstacles, goes the mantra, and the kingdom will come on earth as it is in the heaven of the liberal's imagination.

Strange that the vanity which accompanies beauty --excusable, perhaps, when there is such great beauty, or at any rate understandable --should persist after the beauty was gone.
Matthew Alper

In the "higher" animals, most particularly among the mammals, threatening circumstances elicit a particular type of pain we refer to as anxiety. Anxiety constitutes a type of pain meant to prompt these "higher" order animals to avoid potentially hazardous circumstances. For example, a rabbit is cornered by a mountain lion. In such a situation, the rabbit is pumped with adrenaline, charged with the painful symptoms of anxiety, all meant to incite the rabbit to most effectively escape from the source of its discomfort, in this case the mountain lion. In its healthiest form, anxiety is meant to prompt an animal to avoid or escape a potentially hazardous experience. In humans, however, once we became aware of the fact that death was not only inescapable but that it could come at any moment, we were left in a state of constant mortal peril, a state of unceasing anxiety -- much like rabbits perpetually cornered by a mountain lion from which there is no escape. With the emergence of self-awareness, humans became the dysfunctional animal, rendered helpless by an inherent and unceasing anxiety disorder. Unless nature could somehow relieve us of this debilitating awareness of death, it's possible our species might have soon become extinct. It was suddenly critical that our animal be modified in some way that would allow us to maintain self-conscious awareness, while enabling us to deal with our unique awareness of our own

mortalities, of death.
