Manuacturing activity contracted or the ninth consecutivemonth in November, with the seasonally adjusted AustralianIndustry Group Australian Perormance o Manuacturing Index(

) recording a level o 43.6 (readings below50 indicate a contraction in activity with the distance rom 50indicative o the strength o the decrease). This was a drop o1.6 points compared to the previous month.
■
The slump in manuacturing new orders also extended into aninth month, relecting weak global demand and a soteningAustralian economy. The new orders sub-index dropped a urther0.4 points to 43.5 in November.
■
The manuacturing production sub-index remained irmly in thered, at 44.8 in November, down rom 45.2 in October.
■
Although only the ood & beverages sub-sector expanded inNovember, the contraction in the textiles, clothing & ootwear;wood products & urniture; and machinery & equipmentsub-sectors eased considerably.
■
Survey respondents remained cautious about the outlook.They cited a range o inhibitors including: sot demand; higherenergy charges; stronger import competition; and the strongAustralian dollar.
■
Wages and input costs continued to rise in November, while thepersistent decline in selling prices eased only slightly, indicatingthat the proits or manuacturers remain under pressure.

Seasonally adjusted activity increased only in the ood &beverage sub-sector in November.

The contraction o activity in the textiles, clothing & ootwear;wood products & urniture; and machinery & equipmentsub-sectors eased considerably, while the chemical, petroleumand coal products; construction materials; basic metals; andabricated metals sub-sectors all recorded signiicant declinesin activity.
ProduCtIoN ANd CAPACIty utIlISAtIoN

Seasonally adjusted, the production sub-index decreased by0.4 points to 44.8 in November, in an eighth consecutive montho decline in manuacturing output.
■
Production expanded in three out o the 11 sub-sectors thismonth, unchanged rom October. Strong increases werereported in the ood & beverages and wood products &urniture sub-sectors.
■
There were signiicant declines in production in the paper,printing & publishing; construction materials; and basic metalssub-sectors.
■
Capacity utilisation or all manuacturers decreased slightlyto 73.3% in November.
