Confronting Modernity:

Towards A Theology of Ministry in the WesleyanTraditionI. Prolegomenon
The effort to offer a theology of ministry, namely, tounderstand God working in the world--is part of apersistent dialectical enterprise, grounded in a desireto participate in the ancient conversation betweenGod and the people of God. It is faith seekingunderstanding, which requires an intellectual ap-preciation of God, namely, reflective theology. At thecenter of this activity is faith, which makes theenterprise possible. The foundational element in thisworldview is a transcendent God, the creator of heaven and earth. The pursuit of this appreciationmust involve a comprehensive view of reality. It mustconcern itself with life before human existence, theinteraction of the creations of God and ultimateheavenly union with God.God has given the children of God appreceptivequalities so that we might come closer to the divinereality within our lives on the earth. At the center of our gift is Jesus Christ, the insight of salvation. Christis the determinative norm for life. Christ allows us tosee the reality of self-giving or what Paul Achtemierhas described this as the "self-limitation" of Christthat should be assumed by all of our Lord's disciples.
