Global Market Survey 2011
This year marks a landmark success for the FSC Global Market Survey. Nearlyone-quarter of all Forest Stewardship
Council certicate holders took part
1
, the
most comprehensive survey of certicate
holders to date. From small, family-owned furnitureretailers in Central America to the CEOsof multinational paper companies inEurope, respondents embody the full
spectrum of FSC certicate holders. They
also represent over a hundred countries
and speak fteen languages: an excellentreection of FSC’s diversity and global
reach. The Global Market Survey is a key tool for the Forest Stewardship Council. Carriedout annually, it helps us answer important
questions about our certicate holders,
such as why they chose to become FSC
certied, what certication means for
them, and what challenges and
opportunities certication will bring in the
coming years. The data that we gather helps us be more
responsive to certicate holders’ needs. Itgives us insights into specic countries
and sectors, long-term trends and newmarket developments. Most of all, it enables us to provide better support and improved services to
certicate holders, guidance on
compliance with new and currentregulations, and better information about
getting certied in the rst place. These
tools and many others are shaped by
certicate holders’ responses in the global
survey.Thank you to those who took part in the2011 FSC Global Market Survey. Thesuccess of the survey is directlyattributable to the participation of thethousands of small business owners, industry leaders, and forest managementprofessionals who gave up their valuabletime to share their feedback. Andre de FreitasFSC Director General
FSC engaged the external market research agency ZEM (Zentrum für Evaluation und Methoden) from theUniversity of Bonn, to conduct the survey.
