Bananas

Millions of people around the world love bananas. They are the world’s best selling
fruit. People enjoy bananas as snacks, for dessert, or as an important part of a meal.

People started eating bananas thousands of years ago. Scientists who study plants
think this fruit first grew in Asia. The very first bananas weren’t like the ones we have
today. They were probably tough* and difficult to eat.

Many people think bananas grow on trees, but this isn’t true. Banana plants look like
trees because they are so tall, but they aren’t trees because they don’t have woody trunks
or branches. Bananas grow on large plants, not trees. They are in the same family as the
beautiful orchid flower.
