Global Action Week 2007

Theme of the year: Education as a Human Right 
SHAKKHOR Environment and Education Development Society- the first thing whichcomes to the mind looking at this title is – “a community which deals with maintaininggood environment and ensuring education to all”SHAKKHOR is a Non-Profit making Organization. It has been established in the year 2006. SHAKKHOR has been proceedings its work with the motto – “education for all”.The organization gives major emphasis to education, since the SHAKKHOR team believes that education is needed in every aspect in life; education guarantees appropriatedevelopment.SHAKKHOR has been working with Campaign for Popular Education (CAMPE) formthe day of its inauguration and has been supporting the Global Campaign for Education(GCE). Global Action Week (GAW) is an Action Week, which observes one week throughout the Globe to build awareness on “Education for All (EFA)”. Shakkhor has participated in the Global action week, both in last year and this year. The theme for theGlobal Action Week 2007 was ‘Education as a Human Right’. Since Shakkhor also believes education is every human’s right, the organization has carried out special programs, such as ensuring education, proper health, providing entertainment, humanchain, rallies, playing etc. In the meantime Shakkhor has also prepared leaflets, brochures, banners etc. Shakkhor works for the unprivileged and to lead them towards a better life.We have started Youth volunteerism in the education field. The Shakkhor team organizesParent-teachers’ meeting every month, to create awareness between parents of theunprivileged students of our school. We have already organized two court-yard meetingswith the parents to discuss issues regarding education for their children. The awarenessand importance of education has been stated between adolescents. A court-yard meetingwas also held for women to build awareness between them regarding education andhelping them to build up entrepreneurship attitude in them.The activities of “SHAKKHOR Environment and Education Development Society from15

 Education and Enjoyment 
On the basis of Global action week, we introduced some new technique of teaching thestudents in school on this day, such as telling them moral stories, encouraging them to participate in the extra-curricular classes. English, Bengali Math and Music classes weretaken on that day.

Ms. Sangeet Kaur, patron and adviser, was with us on that day. She observed the way thestudent studied and she checked the writings of the students. She helped us byintroducing some motivatingteaching ideas while telling moral stories to the students. She also gave some advice onthe importance of education for the children.The motto of the activities carried out on the 15

of April was to show how the childrenare to be taught, which class of students needs to be taught and their curriculum. Theextra-curricular classes were introduced since this would encourage the children, makethem confident and help them to broaden their mind. The students who are taught in theschool are all street children. The members of SHAKKHOR have taken the initiative tomake sure that none of these children are living in an unprivileged society and everychild has full access to education.The students were happy to study in the new methods and this method has also increasedthe attendance of students in school.

 Education and Creativity
 
On the 16
th
of April, Ms. Sangeet tells a moral story to the students. Art and music classesalong with the regular study classes were taken. The students painted some pictures andsome masks. The day ended through having fun by singing, dancing and reciting poems.

The reason for making the children paint pictures was to encourage them to draw and tospread happiness among them. The reason to give them knowledge about colours and totell them moral stories is to make them hardworking, sincere, independent and confident.The students were really happy due to these activities. They were encouraged to draw andstudy regularly.

 Health-hygiene and Nutrition
 
Shakkhor doesn’t only teach students, it also gives emphasis on their health. On a singleday every week, the class teacher cleans the nails of the students, examines whether theywere proper tidy clothes, whether they drink clean and safe water, etc. This was such aday.
The Shakkhor members and advisors are The teacher giving out instructionsdistributing saline and nutritional supplements regarding how to use these supplementsamong students
Ms. Sangeet distributed oral saline, vitamin C tablets and chocolates among the students.The students were taught the method of making the saline. The importances of vitamin C,which fruits and foods contain vitamin C, which diseases can be prevented or cured bythis vitamin were told to the students.On 17

of April, the distribution of saline and giving knowledge regarding this has madethe children aware of their health. They were able to know about diseases or healthdisturbance and the ways to cure them by taking these supplements. The things they wereable to know during the distribution of these supplements are that consuming vitamin C prevents rashes in mouths and itches on body parts and drinking oral saline preventsdehydration and other problems. The major factor of this work is to consider pupilshealth and to concern about their hygiene and good sanitation.Because of the work in 17April the pupils are now more conscience about their health.The people and the parents appreciate the activities of this organization and they aresatisfied too.
