1.HISTORY
Bluetooth
is an industrial specification for wireless personal area networks (PANs) firstdeveloped by Ericsson, later formalized by the
Bluetooth
Special Interest Group
(SIG)
. The SIG was formally announced on May 20,1999. It was established by Sony Ericsson, IBM, Intel, Toshiba and Nokia, and later joined by many other companies as Associate or Adopter members. The name ‘Bluetooth’ is taken from the 10
th
century Danish king
Harald Blatand
(HaroldBluetooth in English), King of Denmark and Norway from 935 and 936 respectively, to940 known for his unification of previously warring tribes from Denmark, Norway andSweden. Bluetooth likewise was intended to unify different technologies like computersand mobile phones. The Bluetooth logo merges the Nordic runes for H and B. This is theofficial story: however, the actual Harald Blatand that was referred to in naming Bluetoothwas most probably the liberal interpretation given to him in The Long Ships by FransGunnar Bengtsson, a Swedish best-selling Viking-inspired novel.Bluetooth provides a way to connect and exchange information between devices like
personal digital assistants
(PDAs), mobile phones, laptops, PCs, printers and digitalcameras via a secure, low-cost, globally available short range radio frequency. Bluetoothlets these devices talk to each other when they come in range, even if they're not in thesame room, as long as they are within 10 meters (32 feet of each other).
2.INTRODUCTION
Bluetooth is aradiostandard primarily designed for low power consumption, with a shortrange(power class dependent: 10centimeters, 10meters,
100 meters) and with a low-costtransceiver microchipin each device.
Bluetooth lets these devices talk to each other when they come in range, even if they arenot in the same room, as long as they are within up to 100 meters of each other, dependenton the power class of the product.
For a clear understanding some definitions of Bluetooth is listed below
:1. Bluetooth is a wireless connectivity. In other words, it is a way of connecting deviceswithout wires. Until now, there were two ways to connect two devices together (e.g: mobile phone and laptop computers) either a cable or infrared. Now with Bluetooth there is a thirdmuch more useful and flexible method of connecting devices.2. Bluetooth is the new standard for wireless connectivity connecting different devicesacross different platforms. In theory, any Bluetooth device can communicate with another,at a typical range of 10m (30ft.)
