Changes in the early 1900's

Mass Production
-The mass production of goods in the U.S. caused an economic boom. -Mass production became effective through the use of production lines, in which each worker specializes in one area of building a product.

- Production lines were an effective output of goods in a business. -Businesses greatly benefited from and idea called taylorism.

Taylorism
- A belief that maximum efficiency in production was the primary goal in manufacturing - Taylorism considered workers to be replaceable parts

New transportation
-Air and commercial delivery -Many "modern" car technology and alternative fuel cars were introduced.

-Ford motor company lead the industry making cars more accessible to the people

Expansion of Cities
-The automobile industries helped expand cities -More people were living in an Urban environment.

States like new york started expanding upwards

Electricity
-Factories used electricity to power machines and light there buildings. - More access to electricity allowed factories to be built anywhere - Electricity became easily accessible letting everyone use electrical appliances

Effects on Economy and Landscape

General Prosperity
- The 1920's was generally a time of great prosperity -Many people bought goods on credit - Faster production made goods less expensive -Technology helped factories produce more goods and helped workers earn more money

Changes in Cities
- There was improvements in materials and made new buildings like skyscrapers possible
- Skyscrapers allowed cities to make better use of land and allowed more people to live and work in less space.

-Changes in transportation allowed people to grow outward into suburbs

Roads
-More automobiles = need for better roads -Trucks competed with trains to deliver goods -In 1916, the federal government began to pay half of the cost of highways built by states. -Roadside businesses such as gas stations, motels, and restaurants sprang up.
