n September 2005 visitorsrepresenting the Universitiesof Cardiff and Bristol, and theRCSEd were invited to the Universityof Makerere in Kampala, Uganda,to consider the development of theundergraduate dental programme andthe development of a postgraduatespecialist training programme in oraland maxillofacial surgery.This followed an initial visit inFebruary 2004 and a return visitby representatives from MakerereUniversity to the Dental School inCardiff University later the same year.As a result, Dr Richard Oliver and MrMark Brennan were invited to visitMakerere to advise on curriculumdevelopment in the undergraduate

dental programme and ProfessorJonathan Cowpe, Dean of the DentalFaculty, and Mr Andrew Cronin,representing the RCSEd, were invitedto advise on the establishmentof a postgraduate specialtytraining programme in oral andmaxillofacial surgery.During the visit, meetings wereheld with the Vice Chancellor of theUniversity, the Permanent Secretaryat the Ministry of Education, theDirector General of Health Servicesat the Ministry of Health, the Deanof Medicine and the Deputy Dean ofEducation, and other representativesfrom the University’s Faculty ofMedicine. There was also opportunityto meet staff and students fromMulago Hospital, where the oral andmaxillofacial surgery service is based.As a result of the visit, a seriesof recommendations were made,suggesting that the University’sexisting Dental Department mergewith the School of Public Health DentalOfficers/Assistants to become anautonomous school within the Collegeof Health Sciences. The new schoolwould be responsible for the educationof dental undergraduates, publichealth dental officers, dental nurses,and would also provide a postgraduatedental education programme – theirmost urgent need being in oral andmaxillofacial surgery.
