Abstract
In this paper the term Modern Greek Lexicography is introduced and discussed, suggesting that
it covers the period 1976 up to today. Two main features define the lexicographic production of
this period: the language described is the Demotic, and the dictionaries produced since the late
80s employ the principles of the international lexicographic theory and practice. The distinctive
features of four dictionaries published during the years 1995-1998, which also comprise the
landmarks of this period (i.e. Dictionary of Modern Demotic by Kriaras, Tegopoulos-Fytrakis
Major Greek Dictionary, Dictionary of Modern Greek Language by Babiniotis and Dictionary of
the Common Greek Language by the Institute of Modern Greek Studies- The Manolis
Triandafyllidis Foundation) are presented in short. Then it is argued that the titles chosen for each
dictionary are relevant to the attitude towards the Modern Greek language, concluding that the
Kriaras dictionary is the only one which tries to describe the so-called Modern Demotic as it
should be, while the other three accept more or less the strong presence in the modern language of
older forms of the learned tradition. Finally, issues related to the lexicographic resources and
evidence of the dictionaries above are discussed, reaching the conclusion that there is a lot of
work still to be done, especially in the field of compiling bigger and richer linguistic corpora
giving emphasis on the description of the oral language.
