Dad's Daily Quotes
"It is better to wear out than to rust out."
Richard Cumberland
Work - What's it worth?

A new week and a new month. I am currently in Darwin in the northern part of Australia. It is a remote
place. A 4 hour flight from Sydney and it is probably closer to a lot of Asian cities than Australian cities. It
is equatorial and has two seasons, wet and dry. It is currently "the wet" so typically monsoonal with a good
deal of rain and storms about.

On Sunday night we did our 3 monthly Night Vision Goggle flight test in one of our helicopters. This is kind
of like a driving test, at least from the perspective that to maintain our license we need to pass it! From
the perspective of it being a pass or fail kind of thing though there isn't much stress, unlike a driving test
as the skills we demonstrate are things we do all the time. Then last night (Monday) we got a job to pick
up a lady from Katherine Hospital needing urgent medical treatment in Darwin. All flown on our night
vision goggles and my first aeromedical mission using the technology.

Yesterday was a day of firsts for my family as my eldest
son Brad started his first full time job. He is working
with an organisation called Voice of the Martyrs. Some
of you may recall that Brad and his wife Katherine
went to Colombia last year with Voice of the Martyrs to
film a documentary. The photo at left is of Brad talking
about a film shot in Vietnam he was involved in with
Voice of the Martyrs (click on the photo or this link to

watch the interview).

The Colombian film is still in post production and will I
guess come out sometime this year. Brad will be
involved in work throughout the Asian region working
with people persecuted for their values and beliefs in
certain countries. Values and beliefs that we take for
granted in western society.

God give me work, till my life shall end?
And life, till my work is done.?
Epitaph of Winifred Holtby

So for me my work here in Darwin is to serve in assisting people who are medically or otherwise in
distress. We operate a range of aircraft and medical capability to deliver medical care to those in need.
My son Brad is now entering an occupation of service to those in need of defending their values and
beliefs. He will be delivering care in a different manner.

Temperance and labor are the two true physicians of man. Jean Jacques Rousseau

But we all don't need to be employed in such professions to be delivering care to those around us. We can
all serve in our employment in some small way or maybe even some grand purpose. Some people's purpose
at work may be to provide a bright face and smile daily and alter the whole work environment. I know
people like that who change the whole face of work by just being who they are and turning up everyday.
Maybe your area of service is just to be the best you can be in your chosen area of work.
