One of the things we at the Salvage Yard like to do, as a church, is tithe to other ministries so that we can bless others as God has blessed us. Last month Tim Decker came to speak to our church about SALT. I contacted Michael  Neterer , the director of SALT who shared this information about the ministry.— Mike ed.

Mardi Gras 2009…Not your average missions trip. Over the last 4 yearswe have been taking a team from the Salvage Yard to New Orleans,Louisiana during Mardi Gras. It is an intense time of telling peopleabout Jesus and sharing God’s love during the craziest party on earth. While we are there we will be giving food and clothes to the homeless, sharing the Suitcase Sideshow, face painting, giving henna tattoos, andmost importantly telling people about Jesus. We have the biggest teamthat we have ever had from our church, Kara Gregory, Brian Hoscheit,Shelly Lites, Bart Andersen, Philip Shorey, Sari Schwarzbauer, DanClaessons, and me. We will be meeting up with a ministry called An-swering the Cries, and will join together at Lakeview Christian Center inNew Orleans. Other Churches and ministries will be coming from allover the country to join in the ministry. We need prayer that God willprotect our hearts and our minds from the junk that happens duringMardi Gras. We also need prayer that God will open the hearts andminds of all of the people that we come into contact with.

Somali Adult Literacy Training ( SALT ) was started in 2003 by Michael Neterer in partnershipwith Yaqub Mohamed , a Somali pastor, to improve the English & literacy skills of Somali refugees inMinnesota . Pastor Mohamed emphasized the need for American-Somali friendship, as an integral partof language & literacy learning. Therefore, our program emphasizes one-on-one tutoring, in addition toteacher-led classes. This formula has proved successful and with help from over 500 volunteers SALThas helped over 500 Somali English-language learners at six outreach sites, since 2003. The character of this program is relational, rather than institutional. This project seeks to overcome the barriers of lan-guage and transportation and address differences in culture and religion with kindness and respect to en-courage friendship between Somali and English-speaking American adults.*
