Made 4 UEpisode Three
Dealing withDeath
The door to Deandre Archer’s apartment opened slowly and he looked at mewith a look of confusion. Deandre, who goes by his middle name Chris, was myneighbor and an ex client of my down at the Arbitrary firm. He had his rectangularglasses on his head and he wore a tank top, revealing his athletically built, mochafrappuccino looking skin. Any other time, I would have came all on myself, but hisenergy was giving off a kill joy mood.“Kenny, what are you doing here?”I looked down to the ground and then over to my right, catching my bestfriend Junior Ross getting on the elevator after I told him to leave.“Kenny?” Chris called as I snapped in attention to him.“Oh, yeah, I just needed to talk to you real quick.”“Who was that guy I’ve been seeing you all over? Was he the one who toldme to get out?” I could sense a bit of jealousy in his voice but it didn’t make anysense to me why he was even getting to that point. It was flattering to see he stillremembered that situation in my house.“That’s William, we are going to try and rekindle our relationship.” I defendedquickly, “But I need to talk to you about something more important.”His eyes faded into attention on the wall behind me and his mind seemed tobe distant but I continued talking anyway.“Seeing how you wanted friends’ in the building, I wanted to be the first toaccept that invitation.” I smiled nervously but I got no response.“Well,” I continued softly, “I just got some news that got me a bit down and Ineed some support. I just found out that I am HIV positive.”His eyes fell on me quickly, angrily and mixed with concern.“Aren’t you gay?” he coldly asked as if it was a matter of fact.“Yes? What does that-““Well, I’m sorry to hear that.” He muttered.“I don’t need pity, just support.”

“Oh, well, then, I can’t help you.” He finished emotionless and closed thedoor right after. I was stunned, appalled and let my mind race with all kinds of questions. Was something wrong with him? Did something happen in his life? WasWilliam making him jealous? It was too confusing and was making my head hurt. When I turned around, William was standing in the door way of my apartment.“You okay, Mr. Whitley?” he asked, with a smug look on his face. I slowlywalked over and shook my head.“I will be okay once I take your last name, Mr. Harrell.” I flirted as Williamwrapped me up in his arms.“Soon, baby, real soon.” He answered and kissed me. I returned the kiss andcouldn’t help thinking that Chris was in a different mood then a few days ago andeven though my body was here in William’s arms; my mind was in with Chris’s.I never could understand why men do the things that they do or say thethings they say. Even when William left me the first time, the excuses and reasonsmen give to avoid you have never ceased to amaze me. Take Aric Dillon forexample, he was a cute, funny and charming male who was one of those gays whothought wearing oversized hats made him more masculine but it couldn’t hide thetrue girl locked in on the inside. We had initially clicked and enjoyed conversationfor days that started out the same way and ended the same way. The traditionalsalutations of saying hello or depending on the time of day, good morning or goodafternoon, were always used. However it was one Wednesday afternoon he stoppedby and we really got to know each other better by being in front of each other, without the sex. We did get naked but I felt that if he wanted all of me, he wouldhave to work for it. When I told him this, he reluctantly agreed and soon after, wenthome. Not long after he left, my other best friend Teddy Mathis, had stopped by andI was so stricken with Aric that I shared with him what he looked like. The look on Teddy’s face was one I had seen a few times before.“How do you know him?” I asked, a bit intrigued but cautious at what theanswer was.“Girl, he’s a nice person.” Teddy started out saying. I smiled.“Oh, no, you’re hiding something. Spill it.” I demanded, sitting down at mysquare dining table as Teddy walked to my kitchen to pour him a drink.“Where did you meet him?” he asked.“Online, he lives in Hayward and he says he is twenty nine.” Teddy burst out in a laugh and abruptly caught himself.

“What? What’s funny?” I asked and that’s when Teddy turned, looked at meand sipped his Merlot that he had poured.“That child is two years younger than me.” He stated, “I never did like himbut he was there at the same clubs Junior and I went to when we were in ourtwenties.”My eyes were widened from the shock of Aric feeling the need to lie about hisage to me. I didn’t mind about age at all, since one of my former lovers was in hisforties, but I did mind the lying part. The smallest lie in my eyes, even about age oroccupation, says that you will lie about other things as well. So I picked up my cellphone and went to call Aric.“Um, are you calling him?” Teddy asked quickly, scooting over to be closer tome. I nodded and looked at a water spot on my table as the line rung.“Chile,”“Boy, stop worrying. When have you ever known me to be that type of gay?”I asked, rubbing the spot away right when Aric picked up “Hey, Aric, you make ithome yet?”“Uh, no, still driving,” he answered.“Oh, okay, I was just wondering if you had a MySpace page so I could seemore pictures of you.”“No, I deleted my page a long time ago. I will email you some pictures when Iget home.”“You do that. Let me know when you arrive.” I said, ending the conversation. Teddy handed me my laptop and then placed his hand on his hip.“You’re not waiting are you?” he asked.“You know me oh so well,” I responded. Since I had already gotten Aric’s lastname from a previous conversation we had, I went to test the validity of his word. Isearched for him on MySpace by name and he was the second profile on the list, having the same name as his screen name on the chat site I met him on. When Iclicked his profile, there was his true age, thirty three, just as Teddy said and sawthe last time he had signed in was two months prior. I smiled a little and opened myphone again, this time to text him. The text to him said that I was looking at hisprofile and his response was that he deleted it. When I remarked that it was thesame name as the other site and that he signed in two months before this, heobjected and said that he just doesn’t like MySpace. Days later, he accused me of being dry and not feeling the love from me and said that he wasn’t going to call ortext me anymore since I didn’t understand where he was coming from.
