---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------UNIT 6: LIGHT
6.1 Light
- Light is a form of energy and the main source of light is the Sun.
- Other sources of light are:
(a) Burning materials
(b) Lamps
(c) A lighted candle
(d) Lighting
- Light is needed in our daily life
- Green plants need light to make food, human beings and animals need light to see.
- Lights moves at very fast speed, that is about 300 000 kilometres per second
6.2 Light Travels in a Straight Line
- Light travels towards all directions in a straights line.
- Thatt is why we can see a lighted candle in a dark room from any corner

When light rays that are travelling in a straight line are blocked by an opaque or translucent
object, a shadow will be formed
A shadow is dark and does not have the original colour of the object.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The size of the shadow depends on the distance between the object and the light source.
(a) When the distance between an object and its light source decrease, the size of the shadow
increases.

(b) When the distance between an object and the white screen decreases, the sizes of the
shadow decreases.

Method

To find out how the shadow is formed

(a) to keep the same :- type of torchlight used / type of white screen
used
(b) to change
:- types of objects used
(c) to observe
:- presence of shadow
Wooden block, glass block, white screen and torchlight
1. The wooden block is put between torchlight and white screen
2. The torchlight is lighted up.
3. The formation of shadow is observed.
4. The glass block is replaced between the torchlight and the white

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------6.3 Light can be Reflected
- When light falls on an object, some light is reflect off the surface of the object.

This is called reflection of light

Reflection of light depends on the type of surface an object has.
A flat, smooth and shiny surface reflects light better than a rough and dull surface.
A mirror and a clear water surface will reflect light well

(A) The Uses of Reflection of Lights in Everyday Life

Everyday we use of reflection of light without knowing.
- The example of uses are:
(a) Side mirror of a car
(b) Mirror at the sharp bend of a road
(c) Mirror in the barbershop
- The principle of light reflection to design devices like:
(a) Periscope

- It is used submarine to allow to look above the surface of the water

(b) Kaleidoscope

- We can see different patterns of light made by pieces of coloured glass mirrors.
