What is a Music Production Library?
By Suzannah Doyle, composer An online music library is a web site where composers upload their music to be licensed or sold toindividuals and production companies. The library usually handles the business part of thetransaction, giving library users a way to listen/ preview songs, buy and download them, and fill outnecessary paperwork when the song is licensed for use in a production. These libraries usually have 3 major kinds of music related products:1. Songs (instrumental and vocal)2. Sound Effects3. Music Loops (elements used to create songs)(Note: Some also carry ring tones.)Individuals can license (buy) music to use on their MP3 players, cell phones, or in You Tube videosand other non-profit productions. Businesses can license the right to use music in commercials, movies, television shows, greeting cards, client promotions and for other businesses uses. Some music libraries are easier to use than others, and each one organizes their music differently. Some let you search for songs by mood, genre, geographic location (as in the example below), whileothers ask you to describe your project and send you suggested music they screen on your behalf.

Licensing music from a library
When licensing music to use in a production from an online music library, a company fills out a trackusage report (digitally, at the music library), in which they describe how the song will be used, including the expected quantity of products that will feature the song (e.g. number of DVD movies, or broadcasts of a commercial), and how long the song will be used.If the song will be used in a broadcast or commercial venture, they fill out and file a Cue Sheet, whichis sent to either ASCAP, BMI, or SESAC. These groups, called performing rights organizations, collectroyalties on behalf of composers and performers anytime their music is used in public. Most music libraries now generate License agreements, cue sheets and track usage reports -- inaddition to regular sales reports -- digitally for the content provider to view and have on file.

Custom music production
Some production music libraries have composers on hand who can create music on demand for specific projects; and some offer Custom CD creation for corporate use, offering them use of readymade or made to order tracks for specific projects and events.
