CPU Registers

CPU registers are
very
special memorylocations constructed from flip-flops. Theyare not part of main memory; the CPUimplements them on-chip. Variousmembers of the 80x86 family havedifferent register sizes.

The 886, 8286, 8486, and 8686 (x86 fromnow on) CPUs have exactly four registers, all 16 bits wide. All arithmetic and locationoperations occur in the CPU registers.

Correction on slide 2 - there are exactly 4 general purpose registers. for the 686 these are 32bit wide and can be up to 64 bit wide generally denoted by the prefix of E i.e instead of AX, there is EAX referring to the 32 bit wide accumulator register. thought that unspecific statement might lead to confusion for other readers. cheers
