India tobacco exports surge 46 pct in Apr-Dec
India's tobacco exports surged 46 percent to $543.6million in first nine months of fiscal 2008/09, as outputcuts in Europe forced overseas buyers to source moreproduce from the country, a senior official said.

Tobacco stubbing out in public, govt to demarcatespecial zones for smokers
Almost four months into the ban on smoking in publicplaces, the Delhi government plans to take it a stepforward by demarcating space for smoking and no-smoking in public areas such as restaurants, pubs andairport lounges. The guidelines, which governmentofficials say are as per international standards, are set tobe implemented in time for the Commonwealth Games in2010.

Further dilution of pictorial tobacco warnings feared
The Group of Ministers (GoM) in India will again meet toassuage concerns of tobacco lobby on pictorial warnings,health activists apprehend. This group of ministers (GoM)consists of: Pranab Mukherjee (External Affairs Minister),Kamal Nath (Commerce and Industry Minister),Priyaranjan Dasmunsi (former Information andBroadcasting Minister), S Jaipal Reddy (UrbanDevelopment Minister), Dr Anbumani Ramadoss (Healthand family welfare Minister), and Oscar Fernandes (labour and employment Minister for state).

Tobacco exports jump 13% on global demand
Tobacco shipment from India, the third-largest exporter inthe world, surged by 61% to Rs 2,428 crore till December 2008 on better price realizations and weakening rupeeagainst the dollar. Prices of tobacco skyrocketed to arecord average of Rs 84.85 per kg during auctions inAndhra Pradesh in 2008 against Rs 47.47 the previousyear.

After months of smoking ban, Chhattisgarh yet tofile a case
Chhattisgarh police, yet to register a maiden case againsta smoker even after three months of ban on smoking inpublic places, say they have more serious jobs in hand inthe Maoist insurgency-hit state.Top officers at the policeheadquarters here said the state police, having a strengthof nearly 40,000 personnel for nearly 20.08 millionpopulation, were still looking for the first case against asmoker.

Up in cigarette prices to keep smokers at bay
In an effort to keep youth away from smoking, the UAE'snational tobacco control team will propose prohibitivepricing for cigarettes. The price of cigarettes could morethan quadruple under a proposal from the NationalTobacco Control Team in the United Arab Emirates, AbuDhabi's The National newspaper has reported. Dr WedadAl Maidoor, the head of the Ministry of Health's TobaccoControl Team, said she has prepared a plan to raise theprice of cigarettes between $5.4 and $13.6 a packet.

India to have uniform guideline for cancer treatment
