Food Bank Current situation

Food is one of the most essential tools for the social policy and is in
daily demand to our vulnerable citizens.
But the needs are numerous, food is constantly more expensive
and the financial situation of the municipality is very bad.
In 2012 KODIP had to spend about 600.000 euros for buying food,
while in 2013 it will exceed to 1,000,000.
It is obvious and clear the need for food that people have today,
while it is estimated that situation will grow worse in the future.

This fact, increases our responsibility to protect the quality of food

and the nutritional values.
We live in a Mediterranean country and the Mediterranean diet
with worldwide recognized value, should be preserved and
maintained by all means.
Besides, we should promote local agricultural production that is
rich and qualitative

The municipal food bank serves more than 1,000 families. Food shared with
the help of volunteers in, about, every 2 months.
There are hundreds of food applications from individuals for consideration by
social workers and the number is constantly growing.
The products shared are: olive oil, flour, beans, lentils, chickpeas, macaroni,
rice, evaporated milk, tomato paste, chicken, coffee, sugar, margarine and
everything else is available

Volunteers help so much!

Group E volunteers and students are
waiting outside supermarkets with
trolleys, gather food and prompt the
shoppers to offer something in the trolley.
Then, they give the food to the food bank
volunteers.
Fellows with the orange shirts do a very
good job and worth a big THANKS!

Food Bank The church

Municipal Cooperation with the local Church has tight bonds,

its fruitful and its not much to say that the food bank would not
have accomplished, if the local parishes do not support
voluntary gathering food and give the quantities offered every
year. In the photo you can see the Mayor of Patras and the
Leader of the local church.

Also, with the help of local Church we offer daily food (carried by a vehicle
of the municipality) to about 30 weak elder citizens. They also get help in
several ways by the project Help at home.
These 30 portions of food along with another 200, which are given to
needy citizens, are cooked by volunteers in the kitchens of the Temple of
the Almighty parish church, which is in direct contact with the food bank.

Last year we faced the situation of feeding poor students at

schools.
With the voluntary contribution of the mayor and other public
servants, we collected an amount of money sufficient to enable
us to cover the daily bun of about 600 children every day.
This year we are trying to find the funds for the same action, but it
is very difficult.

FUTURE ACTIONS

,
, :

We plan to create 5 new social structures to tackle malnutrition and

poverty - which is apparently now very hard and intensely ALL
OVER the country - in our city as follows:
.

, cd .

, .

A. SOCIAL GROSERY
A store that will provide in a regular basis people in need with food,
groceries, personal hygiene items, frozen food, clothing and shoes,
books, toys, cd etc.
The store will operate in a fixed timetable and will be linked to local
businesses, schools and the local community for the collection of
goods

B. PROVIDING DAILY FOOD STRUCTURE

Operates at a fixed timetable, meets the existing health standards, has a
certain minimum capacity to provide meals, has the necessary staff and
is also connected with local businesses, schools and the local
community for the benefit of the citizens. Through the operation of the
structure, there will be provided services, psychosocial support and
information to empower and benefit of the people

C. CITY VEGETABLE GARDEN

(has been described in previous speech)

FUTURE ACTIONS
.

,
,

D. TIME BANK
Structure that enables people to profit through transaction in a
particular geographic unit. To exchange goods and services by
an alternative system, without money

E.

E. LIAISON OFFICE
that provides information and facilitation services to economically
weak people

!

It is understood that without the help of voluntary organizations

and citizens, all these efforts would not have the expected results
and the social support that is necessary.
Volunteering has a brilliant field of action.
One is only needed ... PEOPLE!

THANK YOU!
