The mission of My New Red Shoes is to help homeless and low-income children look and feel confident as they start the school year by providing them with new clothing and shoes and rallying youth and adults around this effort through volunteer and educational opportunities for individuals, families, schools, corporations and community groups.

Message from Our Executive Director

Dear friends, Do you remember your favorite pair of shoes? I do a pair of green and white hightops I got for Christmas when I was 12 yearsold. I thought they were incredibly cool, and more importantly, I felt like they reflected me perfectly: I was not just an athlete but a basketball player. And not just any basketball player, but a basketball player with a mind of her own, because no one else I knew had a pair of shoes just like that! Those shoes werent just an expression of my personality, they were practical. My favorite shoes were my vehicle to play sports, which taught me about teamwork, integrity, discipline and hard work deeply held values that shape my life to this day.

It all started with a pair of new shoes. You see, the shoes and clothing My New Red Shoes gives to thousands of homeless children is so much more than attire. Our simple gift boosts confidence, promotes empowerment and self-expression and also shows children facing challenges that no child should have to face that someone out there, someone they dont even know, really cares. Your kindness assured we were able to give 4,253 homeless and very lowincome Bay Area children new shoes and clothing for the 2012 school year. We grew by nearly 1,000 children this year, due in large part to the commitment of a matching grant from the Brin Wojcicki Foundation and your support of their matching challenge. Your gifts in response to the match, as well as your generous contributions during the rest of the year, allowed thousands of homeless children to begin the school year feeling proud and ready to learn. In addition to the direct beneficiaries of our program, we also reached nearly 2,000 child, youth and adult volunteers who shared their time and talents with us. One of our most inspiring volunteers in the last year was a young woman named Charis, who sent us this note: I am an immigrant from China. Last year, or my first year in the U.S., I received a pair of new shoes and a card that had $50 from [My New Red Shoes]. I am really grateful for that and therefore, when I see the volunteer opportunity on the website of this organization, I sign[ed] up at once. Charis involvement as both a recipient of our services and a volunteer truly shows the ripple effect of our work - work that we could not do without you. Our Impact
John is a 14 year-old boy who had spent most of his
summer taking care of his ill father while his mother worked to make ends meet. When he received his new pair of shoes, he asked Are these for me???!! Are you serious???...this is the best thing that has happened to me this summer. Johns teary-eyed father was speechless as he witnessed his sons reaction. John was in disbelief that there are generous people out there who care so much for homeless children.

The shoes helped my kids because they gave them a boost of confidence; they can go to school without feeling like its a hand me down thing and without being teased from other kids. They really like the stylish shoes, and its hard to get them off their feet. They say that their friends like their shoes and think they are cool. Most important, they dont have to feel left out from their peers. They can play with their friends, and they come back and tell me stories about their great day, and we just want to say thank you. 91% of agencies agreed that new shoes and clothes will positively impact the recipients attendance at school. 91% of agencies agreed that new shoes and clothes will positively impact the recipients performance in school. 96% of agencies served shared that the childrens back-to-school experience was enhanced by My New Red Shoes program. 100% of agencies reported that having new clothes on the first day of school impacted the self-esteem of the children in their program. 96% of agencies agreed that My New Red Shoess gift positively impacted the parents of the recipients and eased a key worry during difficult time. 100% of agencies reported that My New Red Shoes provides a critical necessity that they would otherwise not be able to offer.

Stephen
is a 16 year-old homeless teenager who had been expelled from his last two high schools. When he arrived at the shelter, he was determined to find a new beginning and decided to re-enroll in school. When he learned that he would receive brand new shoes and a gift card for school clothing, Stephen was overwhelmed with gratitude. My New Red Shoes encouraged Stephen in his academic pursuits and showed him that there are caring people invested in his future. -Shelter partner 2012

Our Community Outreach

1,897 voulunteers of all ages sorted shoes, sewed gift
bags, created first day cards and packed gift bags to help us reach the children we served.

We engaged 1,050 youth volunteers, including 650 Girl Scouts representing 51 Bay Area troops throughout 2012. Community members collected and donated over 1,500 pairs of shoes during 2012. Over 250 volunteers participated in five Pack for Pride days, during which we packaged gift bags to be distributed to children served.

My New Red Shoes & Girl Scouts of Northern California

In early 2012, with a grant from the Sand Hill Foundation, My New Red Shoes launched a pilot partnership with the Girl Scouts of Northern California. While My New Red Shoes has worked with individual Girl Scouts troops since its founding in 2006, this strategic partnership aims to efficiently leverage the strengths of each organization, assisting the Girl Scouts in achieving their leadership goals and My New Red Shoes in providing more homeless children with shoes and clothing. My New Red Shoes has developed unique servicebased curricula, tailored to each scouting level from Daisies to Ambassadors; individual girls and/ or Troop Leaders can download and incorporate these activities to earn badges and awards that assist scouts in bridging to the next level. In addition to providing customized, age-appropriate service activities, as part of this partnership, My New Red Shoes also planned and organized a large onsite service event during which Daisies, Brownies and Girl Scouts sorted shoes, sewed gift bags and created first day cards at My New Red Shoes new location. More than 200 Girl Scouts participated in the days activities. Additionally, various troops hosted shoe drives prior to the event, resulting in the donation of 170 pairs of shoes distributed to homeless children in summer 2012. Beyond the immediate organizational goals this partnership will help My New Red Shoes achieve, working with the Girl Scouts of Northern California will strengthen our community visibility through their network of 47,000 girls and their families; diversify My New Red Shoes source of shoes; and create and evaluate a strategic partnership model that can be replicated with other service-oriented groups. In 2012-2013 and beyond, My New Red Shoes hopes to identify additional youth and adult service-oriented groups with which we can partner in this way.

Colton is an 8 year-old boy living in a shelter in San Francisco with

his family. He lost a lot of his clothing from 2nd grade during one of his familys many transitions. Being able to get new clothing from My New Red Shoes will allow Colton to pick out all new clothes for school. He hasnt been able to get any new clothing for himself since the family became homeless last summer. This will allow him to go to school feeling confident and ready to learn!

The Brin Wojcicki Foundation Matching Challege Grant

In 2012, the Brin Wojcicki Foundation challenged My New Red Shoes with a $75,000 matching grant. Because of the Foundations generosity and the overwhelming response of our community of supporters, we were able to meet the chanllenge and grow our number of children served over our original projection. We are deeply grateful to the Brin Wojcicki Foundation and all who helped us meet the match! Met goal of raising $75,000 in funds from June 2012 through August 2012 matched by the Brin Wojcicki Foundation. Increased number of children served by 19% over 2011 with matching funds raised. 190 donors participated in the matching challenge, helping us provide more than 4,250 Bay Area homeless and low-income children with the gift of confidence for school.

My New Red Shoes New Home

In April 2012, My New Red Shoes moved into our new home at the Sobrato Center for NonprofitsRedwood Shores. Our new space co-locates our administrative office, shoe warehouse and community engagement space. We were able to move in time to run our summer distribution of shoes and clothing gift cards provided to 4,253 children this year out of this new space, confirming that our set-up is appropriate for our operations and will allow for our continued growth. Additionally, of our 1,897 volunteers who assisted us throughout fiscal year 2012, over 1,000 participated in activities onsite at our new location between April and August. This further confirms that having centrally located, optimally configured space helps us build community among our volunteers and accomplish key tasks that assist us in reaching the children we serve. We are extraordinarily pleased with our new home and are thrilled that so many friends and supporters have had the chance to visit, volunteer and enjoy the space along with us in recent months. We are especially grateful to the Sand Hill Foundation for their capital grant, allowing us to complete necessary build-out and equipment purchases to ready the location for our use, and to other key donors, like the Gilt Groupe which helped us source deeply discounted shelving for our shoe warehouse. For 2012, our cash income net of expense was $51,940. Since 2011, My New Red Shoes has been seeking a new retail shoe donor, but has not yet secured a partnership. As such, in 2012, we show a loss in in-kind goods: we collected $37,788 in shoes from community members but distributed $105,200 in shoes to the children we serve, drawing from existing shoe inventory. My New Red Shoes does not receive an external audit. Financial statements are finalized with CPA support from Frank, Rimerman & Co. LLP.
