RBT 122: Residential Technology IILesson 1 – Roof Design and Roofing
Lesson Overview
A roof assembly as a whole must perform a variety of functions. These design functions would includethe ability to:
•
stay securely in place when subjected to wind loads
•
provide structural support for the materials placed on the roof
•
effectively drain rain water off of the structure
•
control air flow in the attic space
•
control water vapor diffusion and condensation in the attic space
•
accommodate the placement of insulation
•
provide a durable surface to protect the assembly componentsThe materials and components in a roof assembly are selected based on the properties that make themsuitable for these various tasks. This lesson provides an introduction to various types roof assembliesthat are used in residential construction.
