Advantages and disadvantages of texting:

Our groups aim is to show how texting affects Filipino lives. Did it help our fellowmen to live a better life or did it just give us trouble? Through this video documentary, we will present different facts and surveys regarding texting as a mean of communication.

Anything has its own function and disadvantage. In the late 90s, a new device was invented to help improvise the ease of communication worldwidethe cellular phone. Everyone is familiar with it. in fact, almost 95% of Filipinos have cellular phones. As we all know, it is the fastest and most convenient way of communicating and socializing with other people even they are on the other corner of the world. Through calls and texts, we can say what we want to say or express what we want to express. In a survey, it is said that the Philippines is the texting capital of the world. Filipinos value family and friendship so much which is why we never miss a chance to interact with them. Texting is the number one way of communication because it is fast, convenient, and affordable. Not all of us can afford post-paid plans than have unlimited calls, but all of us can avail unlimited texts, which is at least ten pesos per day. Texting has different uses. It can be either useful or harmful. Let us analyse the advantages and disadvantages of texting through our video presentation. First, we are going to present the advantages of texting. This will include different ways on how texting helps us in our daily lives. Texting is the easiest and cheapest way to communicate with our loved ones. It can send our messages with just one press even the receiver is out of the country. How amazing right? Before, we need to send letters and mails in a post office which eats a lot of time in order to deliver it to our receiver; but now, you do not need to worry if he/she read it or not because you can send your message for how many times you want with a lower cost. There are certain times when you need to send reminders and information quickly. By texting it, you are relieved. Another helpful thing made possible by texting is announcements from different organizations. When a storm comes, it is easier to remind people that there will be no classes or works. Aside from that, entrepreneurs and businessmen use texting as their tool to

make their businesses convenient to customers. For example, water delivery stations accept texts from their customers. Another example of that are the television networks using texts votes and text polls. We may not be aware of it but they actually make money through it. After presenting the advantages, we will now feature the disadvantages of texting. It is very unfortunate that even texting has its own bad side. Because texting is too mainstream and convenient, there are people who abuse its functions. There are crimes that are caused by texting. If you are not familiar with text clans, then let us introduce what it is. Text clans are groups created in texting. People you do not know from different parts of the country will text you and interact with you through texting. Because you are not precisely sure of whom these people are; they can lie about their identities. They may say they are only 18, that they are female, and that they live in somewhere you have not heard of or even say they own different businesses just to impress you. When you believe, for sure you will be impressed and trust them. When they succeeded in getting your trust, they will invite you in a group meeting or what they call group eyeball. You thought everyone does not know each other but the truth is that you are the only one who does not know these people. They will do bad things to you like rob, rape, or kill you. Aside from that, telecommunications subscribers complain about promos or applications they do not know that eat their loads. There are also scams through text messages like saying they are your aunts or uncles working in abroad and that you should reload their roaming numbers. There are victims who are fooled by these kinds of scams. In post-paid plans, subscribers are shocked on their monthly bills because they never thought they would pay bills higher than what they expected.

Philippines: Still Text Messaging Champ -US Study

The US-based technology and social media news blog Mashable.com today released an info graphic detailing text messaging trends in the US and around the world, aggregated from various news sources. Perhaps not surprisingly, the Philippines continues to be the text messaging capital of the world. Citing collated data from Reuters, the New York Times, CTIA.org, UPI.com, Pew Research, Kvue.com, Matzav.com, and Portio Research, the infographic showed that, in 2009, the average Filipino mobile subscriber sent an average of 600 text messages per month, or 43 percent more than their US counterparts. "SMS statistics vary widely by source, but the trends and comparisons are generally consistent," researcher Shane Snow noted. "The cost of a cell phone and SMS plan compared to that of a computer and a broadband connection has made texting extremely popular in developing countries, and unlimited messaging" plans have

made it the communication medium of choice for teens everywhere (beating face-to-face conversation and e-mail in popularity)," he explained. Source: http://www.gmanetwork.com/news/story/198832/scitech/philippines-still-text-messagingchamp-us-study

Text What?: The Rise Of Planets Of The Jejemons

Surely everyone of us are aware of the texters known as the Jejemons. They are the kind of texters who gives us brain challenges in order to decipher their text messages (like j3j3, eiyowhhh powssx, etc.). They combine numbers, small and capital letters together with exclamation points in texting. Sometimes, you will never know what they are saying because you really cannot understand the words they use.

If you are wondering where these jejemons come from, then let us give you a simple explanation.

Jejemon evolution
Well, cellphones before have keypads which contain numbers and three alphabets in one key. Typing complete words are quite tough if we have such keypads so we shorten words in order to consume lesser time and effort in text messages. For example, instead of saying Nasaan ka na, nandito na ako sa Quezon City? you type wer na u? qc na me. before, the changes in words are not that different from the original words so they are understandable.

The Rise Of GM
GM or group messages are messages sent to many people. These are messages which are not meant for private talks. Teenagers try to put designs on their group messages. They put many emoticons and punctuation marks on their group messages to show their creativity. They also put numbers indicating their favourite numbers or numbers for a special occasion.

Conclusion
Because people think too much punctuation marks letters and numbers are more attractive to read, they developed the idea of combining these symbols together to create a very unique type of texting. They are called jejemons because their way to say haha or hehe is jeje, which sounds very weird and corny.
