(4,5km).

Good morning! Im sitting in my balcony, sipping tea, gazing far, beyond the sea, at the peaks of Mt. Olympus. The first snow has already
fallen restoring their white shrouds for this year too.
Olympus! What a fantastic place, with energy so fresh and history so
much
When most people talk of trekking on Mt. Olympus, they automatically think of Litohoro and Prionia. Still, in the ancient times these
places didnt even exist. In the days of Alexander, the paths started
from Dion transporting you through a seductive route all the way up
to the abaton.
In modern times the first to conquer the Mitikas summit (2918m)
was Christos Kakkalos. In August 2013 were celebrating the centennial of that first ascent to the House of the Gods.
This mountain with its unparalleled natural beauty ...thankfully
missed the train of tourist development apart from the few refuges
belonging to the Mountaineering Federation of Greece to cover the
basic needs of visitors who climb up during the summer months.
The latest addition is the newly built refuge of Koromilia which started functioning earlier this year. It stands at an altitude of 1000m and
will continue operating during the winter upon request. The path to
get there starts from the small chapel of St. Constatines, about 4km
out of Dion village. In the summertime the refuge is accessible by car
too the forest road starts from the same chapel and it is a 10km
(approximately 20min) drive. The foot path should take about 2 hours
walking (4,5km).
The foot path was opened recently and it runs along the canyon of
Orlias. Almost next to the chapel there is a cluster of cool ponds and
cascades which are swarming with people in the summer. About halfway to the refuge youll find the waterfall of red rock, with its amazing
scenery.

Koromilia can work as a base camp for thrilling adventures into the
surrounding fairyland of thick beech forests, streams, ravines and
ponds with magical views of the gulf of Thermaikos and Halkidiki.
The whole area of Orlias, from its springs down to its brooks and ravines is of exceptional beauty and not that well-known. Its terrain offers a multitude of options for exploring it like trekking, climbing and
canyoning.
From Koromilia you can ascend relatively easily to Petrostrougka and
the Plateau of the Muses and spend the night at the refuge Christos
Kakkalos (run by Mike Styllas, member of the first Greek mission to
climb Mt. Everest).
The bolder ones can try their luck at a relatively new activity for Greek
standards, mountain skiing. It offers strong thrills while at the same
time protecting the environment as it leaves almost no traces or residue neither does it require any costly structural interventions like
skiing resorts.
For the less daring, but equally adventurous, there is the refuge
Summit Zero which, as the name implies, is at 0 altitude, at the port
of Gritsa. It offers warm hospitality, and a series of mountain and sea
activities.
The new refuge of Koromilia has two floors, sleeps 16 people, and
has toilet and shower facilities. It faces east and is warm and cosy,
and offers a range of cooked foods (vegetarian too).
Accommodation costs: 12, for members of mountaineering clubs
10. Tents go free.

Dj. 26 digital.
Nicola Gala is making a comeback at Claap, with two clearly dance
tracks: Inner Sector and Party People. I must admit that at first I
wasnt overall satisfied and excited about them, as I felt that what
I heard was less than what Gala is capable of. But that impression
of mine was proven completely wrong when I found myself in a club
where the DJ played Inner Sector, and I wouldnt exaggerate saying
that the moment it kicked in was definitely the evenings highlight.
Without a shadow of a doubt, these two tracks can work as an important tool for every DJ. Released on the 26th of November, in vinyl
and digital.

At times I feel as if there is some kind of saturation when it comes to production, but, fortunately, albums like this one prove me wrong.
Rising and Falling is the fourth album of Layo Paskin and Matthew Benjamin,
the dynamic duo also known as Layo & Bushwacka. Six years after their last
album, they decided to make a comeback, creating 15 tracks that will absolutely stun you. These guys are showing off their undoubted strength and their
impeccable talent in production. Electronica, ambient, Tech House, Techno,
theyre all included in this project. Nonetheless, Id like to underline the fact
that these tracks do have a common denominator. They are not just fifteen
productions with different attributes gathered together by chance.
I could write about this release for hours, but Ill have to focus on the basics: Generally speaking, the album is rather dark, expressing some sort
of sorrow, although you will find upbeat tracks in there as well, such as The
Way Home. For those who need groovy and tribal sounds, tracks like Raw
Defined and Born in the Backwoods surely wont let you down. Vocals by
Kim Ann Foxman, Jasmina Vico and Cevin Fisher are the finishing touch. Each
one of them matched perfectly the style of the album, and in all cases the
production did not overshadow the vocals, neither did the vocals outshine the
production.
10/10 for Layo & Bushwackas Rising & Falling, released on the 22nd of October, 2012, by their own label, Olmeto Recordings. Available in CD and digital.

The Sound Of Everything Deep

The Deep House sublabel of The Sound Of
Everything Records
A&R by Prosis
Roster includes
Prosis, Pablo Fierro, Mauro B & Gerard C, Edmund, Solunamanalia, Rishi K., Kimozaki, G Spice, Christos Fourkis, Nick Devon, Theo
Tag, Thanos T, Sol Element, Nikos Stratakos, Milto Serano, Dontknower, Zero Distance, Jordan Sid, 4 Da People, djSaint, Mr. Mario,
Roni Iron and more.
Prosis, a hot name in international Deep House scene at the moment, having remixed many great artists such as Pablo Fierro,
Sendos Fuera, J&m Brothers & Metodi Hristov to name a few, has
also been a popular artist of The Sound Of Everything Records. In
early 2012 Prosis compiled for The Sound Of Everything Records
an ultra deep mix called Love Waves, featuring 11 exclusive and
previously unreleased tracks by Pablo Fierro, G Spice, Mauro B
& Gerard C, Solunamanalia, Nick Devon and other talented deep
house producers from around the world.
Thanks to this project TSOE decided to focus on deep house as
far as their dance repertoire is concerned. Although The Sound
Of Everything is a record label, which aims at covering the whole
spectrum of contemporary sounds, regardless of genre (hence the
name The Sound Of Everything), they thought that their recent
focus on deep house would work better if they launched a separate
imprint specialized in deep house. Hence The Sound Of Everything Deep was born in June 2012, and its godfather Prosis took
over the A&R for the new sublabel!
A new home is now available for all of TSOEs deep house family!

Damian Lazarus, the infamous for his idiosyncratic nature, Crosstown Rebels spearhead embarks on a daring new project with Day
Zero. On the 20th and 21st of December, 2012, he will be staging a
festival in sun-soaked Playa del Carmen, Mexico, that will celebrate
the momentous end of this world cycle, as decreed by the ancient
Mayan civilization.
To commemorate this enigmatic event he asked thirteen artists to
create a new track for a special Day Zero compilation. His peers and
comrades stepped up to the challenge by contributing to this momentous collection compiled by Damian Lazarus.

In his 16 track album Journey, Basanov exposes new and exclusive
recordings featuring the vocalists that brought him to the limelight,
such as Jazzu taking root in the elegant atmospheres of Under Your
Feet and Stee Downes who is featured in the more buoyant Say
What You Want, shooting punches through the vocal lines and spinning magic within its synth bass lines.
Basanov gathers many talented musicians for his long awaited polished full length, from the percussive master Rahjwanti for the graceful Slip Away, to the feisty Miss Bee and sultry Athena Radford for
the anthemic Like A Child.
These fresh offerings sit alongside, revisit some of his biggest tracks
to date with rare versions made especially for the album, such as We
Are Child of Love and Lonely Days, the latter closing the album in
epic style, parallel to a modern day Prince ballad. His consistent and
quality production techniques express a style that is both elegant and
enigmatic. His music sits as comfortably in the worlds of deep house,
broken beat, nu jazz, disco, as it does in the darker territories of acid
and electro.

Derrick Mays selection throws light on pivotal moments in the formation of techno. Featuring masters and classics that are still relevant today (Carl Craig and KiNK) and tracing contemporaries that
have come into the picture, his own Detroit, desperate for change,
is bursting with energy. In contrast, Edgar uncovers a new dawn for
the city. His chosen tracks are still potent and raw but also major as
yet unheard.

project . CNTRL: Beyond EDM.
He stands out during times of massive quantity of choices and options, which make it hard to tell the good from
the mediocre. Although this is inevitable -considering the transition from the purely analogue era to the exuberant digital one- he still manages to be unique. One could easily say that he is one of the 5 best DJs on the planet.
Always respectful to his influence, insightful about the difficulties of being an entertainer, he communicates what
he feels to each crowd, directly and effortlessly.
Along with the pioneer Richie Hawtin, they have undertaken the project of transmitting their knowledge to the
American crowd, by launching a series of seminars and parties. The purpose is to initiate the American dancefloors
to what we call real EDM. The title of this project says it all: CNTRL: Beyond EDM.

How did you come up with the name Loco Dice?

It all started with dice when I was a kid. Apparently I used to play with dices
and my grandfather started to call me Dice. Many years later I tried to get the
sign from a well known club in Ibiza and while I was on the roof, the security
screamed something like Loco, loco, come down! while my friends were
like Dice, Dice, come down!
That night Loco Dice happened.
Do you have other musical influences besides Hip-Hop?
Yes! There is so much great music out there, and I am not stuck to one
sound.
Tell us a few things about ARTIST ALIFE and Desolat...
Artist Alife is management and booking agency that I run with my partner
Tom Preuss. With Artist Alife we provide kind of infrastructure for all needs
of an artist. Desolat is a record label. I receive and play so much music and
lots of it would remain unreleased or unheard without the label. There I can
release dance music that I like and that works on my dance floors.
What criteria do you use for choosing releases for Desolat?
Most important is my feeling for the tune. I test it on the road, see how it
works, but on top comes always a story, my personal relation to it, the way
how the music found me. I dont care about trends, its a personal affair.
What artists should we look out for? Have you spotted any promising newcomers?
There is our crew: tINI, Hector, Guti, Livio & Roby, Yaya, Martin Buttrich,
Pulshar (...) constantly delivering goods, and there are lots of really good
newcomers who move forward with huge enthusiasm. Some of them you
can find on Desolat.

FOG & ARARA

O - aka Fog & Arara-

.
Achilles and Nikos- aka Fog & Arara- are of those artists who
disprove the biased notion that Greece lacks of talent and
originality.

30 URBANSTYLEMAG

music echoe
First of all Id really like to know, where do the names
you use, Fog and Arara, derive from?
Fog: I am lucky enough to enjoy the view of a big lake
from my garden, just outside my house in beautiful
Corfu. Sunday morning, sunrise, hosting an after with
a few good friends, a big hangover, good music, under
the mystical veil of the morning fog. Its an image carved
deep, like a screenshot from a movie in my mind.
Arara: The name itself came up at the end of last century; it derives from an Indian tribe, the Araras, who live
in the depths of the Amazon rainforest in the Brazilian
state of Par. An extremely interesting tribe that is
unfortunately- at the risk of extinction. The last time we
came in contact with them was in 1987, when it was
found that they knew nothing about jealousy. That feeling and concept was something unknown to them.
You are currently working on your live set. Apart from
your already known to us tracks, youll be presenting
another musical aspect of yours, featuring more jazzy
and bossa nova elements. Would you like to tell us
more about this project?
F.: Ah, if only that poor live could speak! (Laughs) Now,
seriously, maybe this whole delay finally turned out for
the best. We just might be having our best time, production-wise, in various sectors and meanings. I (Achilles)
think that after a big clearance productively but also in
terms of music style, I feel ready to make a great groove
setup for our live. On the other hand, Nikos, with his
great love for IDM, Bossa & Jazzy mood, also because
of the band of which he is a member and because of his
musical background and education, will undertake the
orchestral part of this project.
We wanted to avoid the specific stereotype of 4/4 floor
beat live that many artists do, and this is why it took us
at least two years to figure out how and what to use for a
live of 1,5 hour maximum. I believe it will be more interesting for the listeners if we manage to embody something from both, in the right doses and if we win that bet
then maybe people too will see were not a band with
90% tooling in our assets.
A.: Jazz and bossa elements were always present in our
productions. The material was there, the ideas were
there, so the manifestation of all those in live was a
natural outcome. We are trying to give another dimension to live, creating something different. This came up
mainly due to our own need to express ourselves with
different music styles.
My album, titled Lets Make Waves which will soon be
released by Quantized Music, will feature a rather jazzy
mood.

How difficult is it for a producer, to survive in the times we live

in?
F.: If you asked me in 2010 Id reply saying its very difficult. Now
Ill just say impossible. I wont elaborate on the magical dance
of the resident DJs and their obsession with their decks as if they
were wooden thrones, because the matter simply doesnt interest
me anymore. But I can tell you for sure that the assistance (from
labels and agencies) I see and hear about is insignificant or even
nugatory. Unfortunately, if you dont polish your mask and wear it
along with an attitude, you cant go very far. Even if youre a good
producer, it doesnt really matter and its irrelevant to how many
bookings or releases youre gonna get. Of course, Im not talking
about us, I dont like that anyway, I speak judging from what I see
and hear when talking with important producers whom I like and
who also run to catch up with our times. Saying no, though,
is quite helpful, even when it comes to friends from inside the
scene.
.: In an era when everything is merchantable, its all a matter
of marketing. In order to survive you have to know how to sell
yourself (as in promote yourself) on your own as well as through
some agency or label. The times when you could pursue a career
counting only on your talent, are long gone. Sad but true.
What is your opinion about Greek EDM scene?
F.: Hmmanother painful issue but Ill try to be positive! Lets
say, its as if we have the seeds for a very good crop but the field
wont flourish Personally I think that the three main reasons for
that are 1st , the policy of the clubs, 2nd, the crowd, everyones
now an expert and the majority has stopped having fun and 3rd,
of course ourselves, we started acting like rock stars in a fictional
micro-world, utopic and ephemeral That was the finishing touch,
the rest is well known Surely, the music industry and its expiring
products are to blame too.
.: I think Achilles knows best what to answer to this, as I dont
live in Greece for quite some time now. Greece is a country with
a lot of talented producers, but it lacks infrastructure. I reckon
it hasnt got the appropriate culture to support and promote the
EDM scene.
If you werent musicians, what would you be?
F.: I dont know about Niko, maybe Id be a movie critic or perhaps
something related to photography or art&design.
.: I can tell you exactly what Id be (laughs). Graphic designer &
3D animator. Thats what Ive studied anyway. Before I had even
completed my studies, I was offered a position in the company
where I did my internship. But passion overcame logic after all.
Thank you so much for your time!
F&A: We thank you for the space you gave us and congrats on the
constant promotion of Greek artists!

Bienvenidos a Bananistan!
translated
Hola! Qu tal?
: Hi! How are you?
Vamos a tomar un caf? : Lets go have some coffee!
Dear friends! I urge you to start learning Spanish so as best to acclimatise
with present surroundings! Our country starts resembling the ambiguous
Democracies that dominated Latin America after WWII also known as Banana Republics
For arguments sake I will present you with a rough Top Ten Guide to the
events of recent weeks:
1) During the Antifascism motor-march we had arrests (naturally) but also torture performed by the DELTA Squad and their buddies the Riot Police (MAT
in Greek). People wounded, bleeding with broken bones were refused medical treatment for a whole night at Police Headquarters. And yes, this took
place in civilised, modern Athens not some warzone of the African plains.
2) Workers at the Skaramanga Shipyard, unpaid and on alternate rotation
i.e. working one day a week since last April, suffered mass arrests and beatings by the same culprits as above for demonstrating, while the minister for
Shipping,
a mr. Vroutsis, simply told them that they would just have to get
50
URBANSTYLEMAG
accustomed to hunger! Sadly, he didnt mention the phrase let them eat
cake...
3) During the days of the general strike preventive arrests took place in many
Athenian suburbs. Police attacked, unprovoked, the smaller gatherings of
people outside underground stations taunting them and creating a general
climate of terror so as to deter them from attending the big assemblies downtown. Among those arrested were even underage students.
4) The practical ban of the right to assemble at Syntagma Square (Parliament
Sq., Athens) via heavy police blockades for reasons of public safety and nondisruption of the socio-economic life of the capital. Hear, hear!
5) The arrest of journalist K. Vaxevanis for publicising the now-infamous Lagarde List naming 2059 Greeks as holders of Swiss bank accounts. This list
had been handed over to the Greek State in 2010 by the then French Minister
of Finance Cristine Lagarde as possible evidence of tax-evasion. Since then,
all they have managed to do was to turn it from a CD into a USB stick and
lose it (no joke, thats exactly what was said!) many, many, many times. -Corruption in government ranks? What an absurd idea!?
6) Public television journalists were fired for reasons of censorship! Specifically: Mr. Arvanitis and Ms. Katsimi were dismissed from their morning show
on NET TV due to comments they made regarding a statement by Minister of
Justice mr. Dendias about an article in the British newspaper The Guardian
referring to torture in Police HQ (see above). Said minister went so far as to
threaten to file a lawsuit against the paper, mocking their reports on this alleged abuse, as if we really would go that far? As if you really would go that
far indeed...

50 URBANSTYLEMAG

7) Same category; dismissal of an ET3-TV reporter who dared mention the

heavy police presence and the disgruntled public awaiting the Prime-ministers arrival outside St. Demetrious church in Thessaloniki for the festivities
marking the 100th anniversary of the citys liberation from the Ottomans. His
comments were deemed to contradict the festive climate so he was kindly
given some time off to spend this auspicious days with his family and no
severance pay!
7) ERT (the Greek BBC) continues with its attack on freedom of expression.
Its next victim, believe it or not, is the British TV period-drama series Downton Abbey. The discretion officials of NET TV decided to axe a 12 scene
depicting a gay kiss between a duke and a footman. ...Allegations that pretty
soon well start receiving emails with words blacked out are unfounded. Yet.
8) Another feast of democracy took place at Skouries, Halkidiki, a thick forest area, deep inside the mountain, during the biggest PEACEFUL 8km march
against the creation of a goldmine set to bring tremendous environmental
catastrophe (all for the sake of something like ONE gram of gold per one
TONNE of earth extracted). The complete lack of media coverage made it
much easier for Riot Police to unleash extreme levels of brutality like: breaking windshields and throwing tear gas INSIDE moving vehicles. One of the
lucky drivers lost control of his car and is now facing charges for attempted
murder. In another incident, police stopped a 55-year-old woman, put her
down on her knees and subsequently broke her leg by stepping on it with
their boots.
Later, at the closest hospital where many wounded went for treatment, doctors were bullied into giving out the names of those treated so that illegal
records could be created. (The area reeks with reports of local people being afraid to talk against the mine as the security guards roam nearby villages terrorising people. The mine is a joint venture between the Canadian
El Dorado and Greek AKTOR whose owner mr. Bobolas seems to be involved
in many a suspicious wheelings and dealings -including the privatisation of
water companies.)
Next day, 14 of those arrested were indicted with the incredible charge of
taking part in a revolt, charges last used during the Colonels regime...
9) The slanderous reply of the Bank Of Greece to the E.N.D. (End National
Debt) Foundation resulting in headlines that spoke of ridicule and fraud.
Whatever the truth may be about the existence of this 600 billion in U.S. Government bonds, Mr. Sorras, with his move to offer it to the Greek State, managed to unveil the reluctance of the government to even properly investigate
his claim. As a result he has filed a lawsuit against the Greek Government
and the Ministry of Finance. Were drowning here, someone comes along
saying hes got a raft and we dont even bother to hear him out? I wonder
why? Could it be that the plan doesnt actually involve saving us in the first
place...? Im not defending Mr. Sorras who, truth-be-told, looks more like the
Godfather than a descent businessman; but I find this tendency of all political forces to ridicule him an awkward business...

10) This years National Day military and student parades (yeah, we still have those
over here) were more similar to the Pony Express: now you see it, now its done!
They took place in a festive climate, behind closed... barricades, complete with fences, railings and Riot Police even worse than during the 7-year Dictatorship. They
were accompanied by healthy doses of scare tactics and expulsions for all students
that dared show their disapproval, like the girl that raised her fist and got suspended
from school. A more hilarious incident was when a student protested by marching
barefoot and the TV commentator said ...her heel broke off and in order to keep on
going she took her shoes off! North Korea, Greece you say poteito I say potato...
11) Msdames Geritisdou, mother and daughter, known for accomplishing the impossible: to begin trial proceedings at the International Criminal Court in De Hague
against former PM George A. Papandreou (known more appropriately as GAP), the
Troika and all other collaborators, with the charges of Genocide and Crimes Against
Humanity at the expense of the Greek People (Yes folks, things are really THAT
grave...) have long been a thorn in the side of the plan for our national salvation. So
during the parades on the 28th they got arrested and held for more than 24 hours
without specific charges being made. What saved them was their exquisite knowledge of the Constitution and their Rights. They reported abominable conditions of
detention and psychological torture in an effort to ...curb their enthusiasm!
12) Alexander Chondroyiannis was arrested in Corfu for taking photographs showing
members of the Nazi party Golden Dawn chatting with policemen, a little before the
parade, and publishing them on Facebook. He is being charged with unprovoked
insult, breach of privacy and spreading false news that could harm the countrys
prestige!
13) New legislation according to which expired food can be sold at lower prices. This
way we eliminate a supply source for soup kitchens and at the same time help the big
USM 51
corporations minimise their loses! Two birds in one stone, ingenious!
14) Preparations are starting for the creation of the Water Regulatory Authority, in
view of the privatisations of public water companies. Its purpose to fully control all
water reserves, from wells to rivers and seas. Strange to think that in Bolivia it started in a similar way before it resulted in the water wars...
15) And now we come to the data intercepted by the hackers Anonymous from the
Ministry of Economics. At first it was supposed to relate to employee access codes
and not much attention was brought to it. ...Until journalist Spyros Karatzaferis got arrested for outing the real information at his TV show The Ex-centric news. It contains
clear evidence of the involvement of Government officials from 1996 till today for the
mess that we are in today. Indicatively, there is a new batch of SWAPS signed by the
current PM dated within 2012!
In the old days, wars were fought with weapons and face-to-face. Nowadays, all
these new, incomprehensible words have invaded our lives Swaps, CDS, PSI. A
whole new arsenal. And we have no idea how it works, so we think it cant hurt us...
Censorship, terrorising, arrests... you might say this all looks pretty innocent as opposed to the forced disappearances, the long imprisonments, or the mass graves
of Latin America. What do you think? Is it wise to wait and see? Can we afford to? Or
are we under the illusion that well be safe being part of the E.U.?
And if you think to reprimand me for a Top Ten consisting of 15 items, I only did it to fit
with the times of irrationality and absurdity! It seems to be very catchy as even commercial corporations are adopting itrecently I saw an ad professing the following:
Marinopoulos CARREFOUR: A ONE HUNDRED PER CENT GREEK COMPANY!!!!!
ROFL!!! Nominate them for the Portokalos Award!

USM 51

But, I always like looking at the bright side, so heres a list of optimism for the past
few weeks too:
1) The movement No Intermediaries is spreading well and wide throughout the
country, including more and more product categories. Exchange networks and alternative currency schemes are growing strong and with them so do small, self-organized cooperatives, creating everything from vegetable gardens to day-care centres.
2) The barrage of complaints on air spraying multiply. The issue finally leaves the
realm of conspiracy theories and enters every day talk between growing numbers of
people. Events have been organised for years by various local action groups, but for
the first time a demonstration was organised in the centre of Athens, and a letter of
protest on chemtrails was handed to the Minister Of Defence.
3) A team from The Press Project has taken up the monumental feat of translating
Memorandum No3 in Greek so that people will get to see what it entails before it gets
approved by the Parliament (MPs copy is in English).
4) Guardian to the rescue! The Guardian joins ranks with other foreign media bringing attention and support by reporting on the true nature of things here. A new wave
of philhellenism is spreading at a time of need.
5) The antifascism movement keeps getting bigger. Marches, rallies and concerts
are organised with great success. People show their intolerance to fascism wherever
it may occur from the bus-stop to the workplace. The Builders Syndicate of Athens
press release is a good example of this. It came as a result of a visit by Golden
Dawn members to a construction site where they threatened immigrants, and tried
to blackmail the subcontractor to hire Greeks instead and for ...lower wages!
6) V For Vaxevanis. The way people reacted to all the above mentioned arrests, was
fast, persistent, and coordinated.
7) The following day after the events at Skouries, all shop owners of nearby city of
Ierissos closed down their shops and together with students, farmers and citizens
flooded the Courthouse as an act of solidarity to those accused and as a mark of
their determination to keep on fighting.
8) Workers for 3 TV openly denounced the manipulation of news reports regarding
the events at Skouries giving specific evidence of tampering with the facts and distortion of the truth. They also reported excessive police presence at their workplaces.
9) ERT employees went on strike for a whole week. The workers at Hellenic Steel
Industry are celebrating their one year anniversary since the start of their strike.
While in the case of Vio.Metal. (Industrial Metallurgy; BIO.ME. in Greek) the workers
are struggling for more than a year now to take the factory into their own hands.
Multiple voices are asking for LONGTERM GENERAL STRIKE in all sectors, everywhere! Its simple: dads in cahoots with the loan-shark, mums got Alzheimer, so
the kids take matters in their hands! The State trimmed its debt, demand the same
for private its called seisactheia or debt-relief. The State diminishes the quality
and level of services to its citizens, they stop paying its exorbitant taxes. The video by
Anonymous on what is Government is exquisite by the way.
10) 14 November EUROPEAN STRIKE DAY.
Last night the new Austerity Bill passed by the Greek Parliament ...to say hi! It received a lukewarm welcome by a marginal majority of disinterested MPs, threatened
into voting YES by their party leaders. Alas, they saved the day! Till next time that is.
Were a junkie, hooked on its next dose. Afraid of the pain and the withdrawal symptoms that come with detox, so we take the easy way out and continue down the slippery slide. But the sun here is extra strong; the light will find its way to wake us up and
force us to say yes to life! And then, you might just hear us say:
Do you like music Mr. Finch?

Only then?
At some point, a word will be found. In some language.
And it will take it all inside, it will match it all, precisely.
That moment, when your eyes are half closed.
You come out of the flow and step back for a few seconds.
The whole Earth calms down, it stops spinning, you stop breathing.
You listen to yourself wondering. Slightly leaning forward.
And slightly smiling, with that other smile,
How bizarre It still hurts
And then you come back and the Earth starts spinning again.
Maybe more lubricated now, and more graceful than before.

A December like this one hasnt happened on our planet for thousands of years. The Maya had seen this coming way back, but we,
modern ones, suddenly discovered their prophesies and as we
know so well, misinterpreted them and ...brought chaos! What can
you say of humans! We dont miss a chance to make everything
into a tragedy, to resurrect the bogeyman and bring catastrophe!
Were Drama-junkies I tell you

cover story

On 21-12-2012 we are not going to be destroyed, no meteor

will fall upon us, no aliens are coming, no Hollow-Earth is
opening up, we aint leaving on no spaceships... The 21st of
December 2012 signifies not the end of the world we know,
but the end of the world the way we know it. The world is
not getting destroyed, its just changing. And this change has
started a long, long time ago.
Have you ever seen pictures of the two Amazon tributaries
joining up? The meeting of the waters is a natural phenomenon occurring close to Manaus, Brazil, where the white
river Rio Solimoes meets the dark Rio Negro. For about 6
kilometres the two rivers flow side by side, coexisting, without
merging into one ...yet.
Thus it is now: the old energy runs along with the new in a
period of transition which lasts for ...many kilometres in our
time-space continuum! Transition means one thing is finishing and something else is starting. It implies that there is a
death and a birth. An end and a new beginning. But the transition, in itself, is the unstable period between the two. And
we were all born within this period of change. It is perhaps a
charmless time; for the old is not quite dead yet and the new
not fully established. Nothing is fixed, nothing seems familiar
or recognisable, and there is nothing to hold on to.
For years now, the international community has been going
through a multidimensional, escalating crisis on all levels:
from economy, society and environment, to culture, ethics
and science. This crisis is destined to push us, both individually and collectively, into reassessing life. To awaken, to
deconstruct everything and to compose something new. To
move from being a materialistic society, into a more spiritual
one. To go from I to We, from division to Unity, from shadow
to Light, from individuality to Love.
Ascension to a place of taking responsibility, and looking inwards are the tools that will quicken our steps and bring us
closer to the new age of higher vibrations and higher consciousness. The transition can be an exciting era for we truly
live this great shift in each and every moment. We are walking on a one-way street, and the only thing we can change is
our pace!
On 21-12-12 we celebrate the genesis of the New Earth that
is coming!

Economic value of Dutch dance sector half a billion euros The big international successes of the Dutch DJs and the dance scene were highlighted in a report about the
economic value of the Dutch dance scene, which was presented during the ADE. The
report revealed that over half a billion euros (587 million) is generated in the sector
every year. The full report is available for download at the ADE website. Dutch DJs
well represented in DJ rankings During the DJ Mag Top 100 award ceremony, it was
emphasized that the Dutch DJs play a prominent role in the ranking of best DJs. The
big winner is Armin van Buuren, who managed to win his fifth victory after a year of
absence. Furthermore, half of the top 10 consists of Dutch DJs, and there are 22
Dutch DJs in the full top 100. Also notable is the rise of the harder dance styles,
which are ranked 9 times this year.

LAssiette
Au Beurre

Before RAW magazine, Francoise planned to use her printing press to share
this French magazine from the early 1900s. Much of it still hasnt been reprinted, so this week weve scanned pages from our crumbling copies.
LAssiette Au Beurre was a sophisticated and satirical illustrated journal published between 1901 and 1912. Each issue was devoted to one artist who
tackled social topics during the Belle poque. Were sharing from the issues
on The Aesthetes, Womens Suffrage, and all the young gentlemen (gay life
in Paris).

The Rock of a ghost

Hashima Island is a small, 15-acre outcropping of rock off the coast of Nagasaki, Japan.
Although tiny in size, the island was important in magnitude: It was a major coal mining center for Japan for almost a full century. The island sits atop a coal deposit that descends well
into the ocean floor beneath. Once it was tapped, Japans Mitsubishi Corporation purchased
Hashima from the local families who owned it in 1890. Thats when the heyday of Hashima
Island began.
Since its located about 18 miles from Nagasaki, it made more sense for Mitsubishi to build housing on the
island, rather than ferry its employees to and from the island every day. Squat concrete apartment blocks were
constructed one at a time. Space was at a premium, so the buildings went up instead of out, and families were
jammed together in cramped lodging, sharing bathrooms and kitchens.
Amenities like a movie theater, doctors office, arcades, restaurants and bars were added later, and the city became a thriving, microcosmic community. The entire complex was linked via underground tunnels. At its peak in
1959, Hashima Island was the most densely populated city on Earth, with 5,259 inhabitants on the small, rocky
outcropping. Thats 835 people for every 2.5 acres.

136 URBANSTYLEMAG

the rock of a ghost

Not everyone who lived on Hashima Island did so by choice. During World War II, the Japanese government
forced Chinese and Korean laborers to work on the island. As many as 122 of the 500 Koreans forced to work
from 1939 to 1945 in the coal mines beneath Hashima Island died during their internment.
After World War II, employees found their lives on the island much improved. Modern luxuries like televisions,
radios and the movie theater were introduced post-World War II. And the formerly unvegetated island sprang to
life with rooftop gardens planted and maintained by the islands employee-residents. The golden age of Hashima
Island was pretty short-lived, however. In January 1974, with petroleum supplanting coal as the worlds preferred
energy source, Mitsubishi revealed the mine would be closed. By the following April, the last of the islands residents were ferried onto the mainland, and the island was permanently closed.
Left behind are the relics of what was once a densely populated city, built atop an uninviting slab of rock. The
doctors office still contains an X-ray machine and examination chair with overhead lamp. Broken childrens toys
can be found in empty residences within the apartment blocks. The tunnels that connected the city are passable, but now emblazoned with graffiti. Old television sets and stoves stands as evidence of the existence of their
former owners.

USM 137

The structures of the island are in remarkably good shape, considering their more than three decades of neglect. Some stone walls have
caved and crumbled, but the concrete structures remain largely intact.
Windows are broken and railings along the apartments balconied corridors are in a dangerous state of disrepair, but corridors within the
companys offices are surprisingly undamaged. The city continues to
sit silently offshore, an abandoned ghost island, its only inhabitants
stray cats and the occasional illegal visitor. The island may enjoy more
visitors in the future, though. Japanese officials have applied to make
Hashima Island a World Heritage Site.
