My chosen magazine genre
I have chosen the genre of country pop. This genre is popular in society but there isn’t a popular country magazine about. My magazine is aimed at the younger generation who are into bands like ‘Sugarland’ and ‘The Band Perry’ which are
popular bands. Country pop is a sort of soft rock sub-genre of country music and puts a modern twist on the original
genre. Originating in the 1950’s studio executives Chet Atkins and Owen Bradley wanted to create a new kind of
music. They wanted this music to be aimed at the younger audience as
“rockabilly stole away much of countrymusic's youth audience”. The genre was said to be founded in Nashville, Tennessee thus becoming known as
Nashville sound. The first male artists to come out of this new genre were Jim Reeves and Eddy Arnold, who bothgrew to have widespread acceptance in both country and pop music.
In the early 60’s Patsy Cline emerged and
created a whole new breed of female country artists including Lynn Anderson and Shania Twain who gainedprominence in later ye
ars. Country pop experienced a boom in the 1990’s when country singer LeAnn Rimes has
proved her ability to sing country pop songs such as the record-setting "How Do I Live", which spent 69 weeks on the
Hot 100, the second longest single in the r
ecord history. In the early 2000’s country pop carried on withsuccessful artists like Lee Ann Womack who had a big hit called “I Hope You Dance”. The Dixie Chicks then had
continued success with their country-pop bluegrass-influen
ced album “Home” in 2002.
American Idol bought attention to country pop when Carrie Underwood was exposed in 2006. Then in 2010 Taylor Swift and Lady
Antebellum achieved success. Receiving numerous Grammy awards. Taylor’s albums “Speak Now” and “RED” have
topped charts and both of those albums sold 1 million copies in their debut week sales opening. Uncle Kracker alsoachieved success when his number 3 peaking adult contemporary hit "Smile" also became a number 6 country hit.Lady Antebellum scored another crossover hit in the summer of 2011 with the song "Just A Kiss", and also during thispast summer The Band Perry song "If I Die Young" crossed over to pop radio. To the left are four albumcovers from country popartists as you can see they allhave the same sort of stylewith monotone colouring. Thismonotone colouring istypically in warm colours eventhe Dixie Chicks album coverwith a black and white filterover it (bottom right) haswarm glows of yellowish light throughout it.
