schedules. Check with your PADI Offi ce for more specifi c information.

By mid-2007, people will be able
to complete the knowledge devel-
opment portion of the PADI Open
Water Diver Course online. This
eLearning option gives customers
another method to start their dive
training. It meets the growing need
and consumer preference for con-
venience and immediacy.
riences.
The interactive online program will be filled with information and promo-
tions about what a diver needs to live the dive lifestyle.
1. PADI Dive Centers and Resorts can choose to place a link on their website that allows new student divers to sign up for online knowl- edge development learning. This automatically affiliates the diver with that store.
2. Potential divers who find the eLearning link on padi.com will be prompted to fi rst affi liate with a local PADI Dive Center or Resort before continuing on to the eLearning site.
Either way, the dive center or resort affi liated with that customer will
receive email notification that a new student diver has enrolled in their
program, and the center will receive a revenue share of the program
fee. The dive center/resort instructor can interact with the student diver
via email or through chats. This allows dive center staff to answer ques-
tions and offer packages that include learning tools such as the manual
or multimedia product for reference, RDP, log book, etc. Online learn-
ers will have access to an online version of the PADI Open Water Diver

This online interaction with the student diver is
also an opportunity to provide local diving informa-
tion, discuss dive equipment needs and help plan
out the diver’s training completion – just as you
would with a student diver who is sitting in your dive
center’s classroom. You will be able to track diver
progress throughout the training process. You can
provide links to your center’s web site, giving new
divers access to your equipment, travel and other
promotions before they even enter your facility.
Water Diver student receives from a PADI Instructor
who completes all of the knowledge development
segments of the course. The affiliated dive center or
resort also receives an email notification when the
student diver completes the online program and is
ready to continue. The student diver is directed to
take this eReferral to that center to complete a final
assessment, confined water and open water dives.
Educationally, student divers taking the aca-
demic portion of the PADI Open Water Diver online
is the same as divers using other independent study
methods (going through the Multimedia CD-ROM,
reading the manual, watching the video at home).
The instructor’s role is the same—teaching them how
to dive by getting them in the water in confi ned and
open water dives.
Divers with an eReferral will know that they
need to have medical approval if any conditions ap-
ply to them. They also understand that they will need
to pay for services as well as have equipment--at a
minimum mask, fins and snorkels--and know that you
can help them choose what’s best for them. As with
any referred diver, you simply need to do a preas-
sessment, complete administrative paperwork and
get them in the water having fun.
Be prepared for the PADI Open Water Diver
course online; think about creative course fee op-
tions so that when eReferrals come your way, you
are ready with confined water/open water fees, and
related packages.
Look for more information about eLearning in The Undersea Journal and other publications from your PADI Office.
