Ray Gun Revival magazine Issue 50, January 2009
This is our 50th issue of Ray Gun Revival magazine. Thank you for being a part of thisgrand experiment to revitalize a venerablegenre for a new generation of readers! Onwith the editorial!
J
anuary can be a brutal month. Post-Christmas, post-New Year, it is a time whenthe day-to-day life resumes after a delightfulperiod of other-activity. However, it is also atime when the we have a new year to putour own unique imprint upon, and ours hasbeen shaped by things that happened atChristmas. For me and mine, it was our best Christmasever. We restricted ourselves to one gift each, and made them count. I’ve said for years thatI don’t want to be asked what I’d like for agift. I prefer people to want to know me wellenough to know what I’d like even if I hadn’tasked for something specifically. If I wantsomething specific, I’ll likely get it myself. Butthe real magic comes when somebody caresenough about you to dig into your interestsand surprise you with something that you’dtotally love without having asked for it.For us this year, the special things involvedauthor Cory Doctorow and his book
LittleBrother
. It was the first book I’d felt compelledto read through from cover-to-cover in onesitting in years. I tried to interest my fourteenyear old son in the book without any progress, but then something happened that changedeverything and made for a memorable yearfor all of us.Cory Doctorow embarked on a world-widetour in support of the book, and I hadoccasion to go see him at a reading at HarryW. Schwartz, a charming bookstore in the
Milwaukee area. Cory read a secon of his
book, engaged in a lively Q and A, and thenautographed books. I had a brainstorm andasked Cory to autograph the book to myson’s gaming handle. While I was there, Corywas gracious enough to pose with me for apicture. At least two cool things came out of thatexperience—my son eventually picked upthe book autographed to him, and it opened
his eyes to the wide world of science con.
And I got this great picture of the occasion, which I happily showed to, well, everyone.
My wife, a very cray woman, blew thepicture up and made a custom mae for itand framed it. The mae contains hundreds
of thinly-cut brightly-colored pieces of
construcon paper. The end result looks like astained glass window, hand-craed with love, very cool. It’s exactly the kind of thoughul
gesture that I never would have thought toask for, and yet so perfectly matched myinterests. The whole thing cost her about tenbucks and maybe twenty hours of painstaking
acvity. But it was the thought more than
anything that touched me. My wife, who is
not interested in reading or science con,
knew this was a meaningful experience forme, and acted accordingly. It was amazing!I’ve been working on introducing the pleasure
and ulity of reading to my son since he wasin the rst grade in school. It has just nowpaid o, but has paid o big. Since Christmas,he’s been reading science con on his ownfor pleasure, pounding through ve books in
two weeks. I couldn’t be prouder of him.
2009 is looking like a dicult year. I already
know that changes around here are likely.
However, the language of science con is
the language of discovery, hard work, and(if you’ll permit me a slightly corny word)fellowship. I think we need this release of
con now more than ever, and Ray GunRevival is commied to do whatever it takesto connue bringing you the best spaceopera and golden age sci- that we can. Thisis a language in which we are uent, and it isour great honor and joy to connue to share
works that may help introduce the pleasureof reading to others.Bring it on!
