For Adults Only
Charlotte Lamb
Niall Ardrey had no right to barge into Susanna Howard's flatand search it for his sister. Neither did he have the right to keepcoming into her mind for no apparent reason. Especially whenshe did not even like him!
CHAPTER ONEA

B
LUEBOTTLE
must have got into the bedroom, in spite of thehermetically sealed double-glazing. It was buzzing aroundSusanna's ear like a helicopter looking for a landing pad. Sheflapped a hand to drive it away, but the thing was persistent, the buzzing did not stop, and Susanna suddenly realised that it wasn'tan insect at all. The doorbell was ringing.Fumbling for the alarm clock she peered at it through half-closed eyes. Nine o'clock. Her eyes opened fully.

'Oh, no! I've overslept!' She stumbled out of the bed in panicand snatched up a pink silk robe. While she was sliding her armsinto it and tying the wide belt, the bell continued to ring and sheopened her bedroom door to yell down the corridor.'Okay, okay, I'm coming!'Who on earth could it be? She paused to look at herself in thedressing-table mirror, grimacing. Surely Johnny had not arrivedthis early?'What do you look like?' she asked her reflection ruefully asshe ran a comb through her tousled brown hair. Her face wasflushed with sleep, her eyes still drowsy, the silk robe clung to her  bedwarm body, but she did not have time to do anything muchabout the way she looked. That damned bell was still ringing. She pulled open the door and the man who had been leaningon her bell scowled down at her. He had a long way to scowl; hewas over six foot and Susanna was scarcely five foot three in her  bare feet, a difference of which she was immediately conscious.'Susanna Howard?''Yes, and please take your thumb off my bell, you're giving mea headache.' She watched him lift his hand, slowly. She had never seen him before, she was certain of that, but she knew three thingsabout him already²he was too big, he was a very angry man andshe did not like him. He had the sort of face that threatens withoutmoving a muscle.'What do you want?' she asked, clutching the neck of her robeas he made a thorough survey of her with narrowed grey eyeswhich clearly did not think much of what they saw. Rememberinghow she had looked in the mirror a moment ago, Susanna couldnot really blame him for the lifted eyebrows, but the contemptuoustwist of his mouth made her furious.
