The California Travel and Tourism Commission (CTTC)has implemented a sustainable tourism program toguide the tourism industry in its efforts to adoptsustainability practices and strategies. In 2009, twosignificant documents were written and made availableon the CTTC industry Web site(tourism.visitcalifornia.com). Presented at the firstCalifornia Sustainable Tourism Summit in 2009, theCalifornia Sustainable Tourism Summit PlanningDocument, produced by the Strategic Marketing Group(SMG), and the California Sustainable TourismHandbook
,
written by Dr. Sandra Sun-Ah Ponting and Dr. Jess Ponting (facultymembers in the Recreation and Tourism Management Program at San Diego StateUniversity),
 
served as a catalyst for tourism industry leaders and service providers whowere interested in learning more about operating their organizations in a moresustainable manner.These two publications offer a glimpse of theintricacies and complexities of sustainabletourism, define it and related concepts, andprovide a foundation for understanding theeconomic, social/cultural and environmentalpillars of sustainability. The PlanningDocument emphasizes CTTC’s role insustainable tourism, goals, objectives andstrategies for the state; the results of anindustry sustainable tourism survey; and aSWOT analysis of California’s sustainabletourism assets.
