Executive Summary
ThE SmarT Grid
The use and production o electricity are changing. Consumers are becoming more aware o the environ-mental impacts o the electricity system and are seeking greater ability to manage their electricity use tocontrol costs and help improve the environment. New dispersed energy resources such as solar, wind andstorage hold the promise o not only lowering greenhouse gases, but also allowing consumers to producetheir own electricity and sell the excess. Widespread use o plug-in electric vehicles will bring even greaterchange as consumers look to conveniently charge their cars at home or on the road. These changes will require a paradigm shit in the electricity system. Today, the grid is primarily avehicle or moving electricity rom generators to consumers. Tomorrow, the grid will enable two-way owso electricity and inormation as new technologies make possible new orms o electricity production, delivery and use. The smart grid is the name given to the new electricity system that will emerge romthis paradigm shit.A smart grid is a modern electric system. It uses sensors, monitoring, communications, automationand computers to improve the exibility, security, reliability, efciency, and saety o the electricity system. It increases consumer choice by allowing consumers to better control their electricity use in responseto prices or other parameters. A smart grid includes diverse and distributed energy resources andaccommodates electric vehicle charging. In short, it brings all elements o the electricity system –production, delivery and consumption – closer together to improve overall system operation or thebeneft o consumers and the environment.
