This is a 30 page packet. Included is a 21 page student booklet along with an answer key plus a bookmark for logging vocabulary words as students read and use the packet. The booklets are intended for students in grades 4-8 to use while reading The Witches, by Roald Dahl. There are six reading assignments (of approximately 30-40 pages each) with questions and tasks to go with each assignment. The packet is designed as independent work so that students may be working on this while the teacher is meeting with other students.

The questions and tasks in this booklet cover and reinforce the skills that good readers need to understand and maintain. They include showing comprehension, visualization, identifying point-of-view, predicting, recognition of similes, using context, identifying character traits, and defining vocabulary. The packet also gives students needed writing practice in explaining their thinking, describing, and summarizing.

In my classroom students were responsible for completing one reading assignment with the accompanying questions each week. They would be given a 40 minute period three days a week to complete one week’s assignment. They would then meet with me, or a parent, along with the other students reading the same book (we called this a “bookclub” meeting) to discuss the book and review their assignments. Customize the use of this packet as you wish. What worked for my situation may not be what works best for you. For example, instead of using this as class work, the packet could be used as homework. Also, instead of creating a booklet, the pages can be copied and handed out as separate assignments. You might like to have students complete more than one assignment a week.

The Witches in a nutshell:
Roald Dahl warns children that this book is NOT a fairy tale! This is a delightful story set in both England and Norway where witches are lurking everywhere and looking just like ordinary women. Grandmamma teaches her grandson how to tell a witch from an ordinary woman and we find out just what happens when a witch makes use of her special Formula 86 Delayed Action concoction.
Ideal for students in grades 4-8. Reading level approximately 5th grade.
