The Facts: Now, Three Ways to Receive Your Federal Government Payment1
Is there a change in how I canget my Federal payment?
 Yes. Recently, a law was passedthat said the Federal Government would make most of its paymentselectronically beginning January 2,1999. What does that mean for you? It means that you have choicesabout how you get your Federalpayment. These payments include:Social SecuritSupplemental Security Income(SSI)Veterans BenefitsCivil Service PaymentsRailroad Retirement PaymentsMilitary Retirement PaymentsFederal Salary and Wage Payments
What do I need to know aboutthis change?
 You need to know that you havechoices for how you get your Federalpayment. Here are your choices.1.
Sign up for Direct Deposit.
Direct Deposit means that yourFederal payment is automatically put into your checking, sharedraft (a credit union account) orsavings account, or an ETA
SM
 – ElectronicTransfer Account.There is no paper check to wait for or to deposit at the bank. Your moneygoes right into youraccount. You can sign up forDirect Deposit at your bank,savings and loan, or credit union.Direct Deposit is a simple, safeand secure way to get yourmoney. There should be nocharge for Direct Deposit.2.
Open an Electronic Transfer  Account (ETA)
. An ETA is anew federally insured accountthat you can open at a bank,savings and loan, or creditunion that shows the ETA logo. An ETA is a low-cost accountfor people who do not have ordo not want a checking orsavings account. Opening anETA means that your Federalpayment will be depositedautomatically into your account.To find out where you can openan ETA, call 1-888-382-3311(TDD: 1-877-326-5833), toll-free, or visitour Web site at
www.eta-find.gov

Get your check in the mail.
 You can get your Federal paymentby check if getting your paymentby Direct Deposit or an ETA wouldcause you a hardship.
