Tracing Requirements

The Role of Traceability inSystems Development
Experience has shown that the ability totrace requirements artifacts through thestages of specification, architecture, design, implementation, and testing is asignificant factor in assuring a qualityproduct.
Software developed in many areas for certain customers may have mandatedtraceability requirements (e.g. the FDA).

Definition of Traceability
According to IEEE [1994] traceability is:
“The degree to which a relationship can beestablished between two or more products of thedevelopment process, especially products having apredecessor-successor or master-subordinaterelationship to one another; for example the degreeto which the requirements and design of a givensoftware component match.”
“The degree to which each element in a softwaredevelopment product establishes its reason for existing; for example, the degree to which eachelement in a bubble chart references therequirement it satisfies.”
