Introduction
For supply of steam to heat the gasoil storage tanks in this project a steam with a pressure of 6 bar(a)
& temperature of 180 C is considered.(that is 20C super heated)
Aux. steam consumption is mainly considered for following purposes:
- Heating and keeping temperature of two gas oil storage tanks at 12 C.
- Heat tracing of gasoil lines.
Gas oil storage tanks are always kept at 12 C. The volume storage of each gas oil tank is 20,000 m
3
.
Note: For an optimum calculation of steam consumption, all calculations are based on minimum mean
daily ambient air temperature of -12

Scope of work
This document deals with the calculation details of auxiliary steam system of Shirvan power plant. As it
will be mentioned, the steam is used for heating the gasoil system. In the next sections the calculation
for steam part of system which include calculation of heat loss of storage tank and estimating the
required
steam consumption for this purpose, sizing of tank coil heater, calculation of the heat loss of gasoil lines,
their acoompanying tracers will be shown.

There is natural convectional heat transfer between warm gas oil & cold tank wall. Free convection heat

It is noted that Ra, Gr, Pr and Nu are Rayleigh, Grashof, Prantel and Nusselt numbers respectively.
For tanks heat loss calculation, external surface temperature should be calculated. It should be
mentioned that as portion of D (Tank diameter) to H (Height of tank) is much greater than (35/Gr
H
1/4
), so
according to ref. [5] tanks can be considered as vertical plates. Of course this condition will be checked
in each part.
Internal free convection heat transfer coefficient (hi) on the basis of tank height can be calculated via the
formula as follow:

foot of pipe are as follow:

as length of line A-B is 30 meters and with consideration 20% additional length for fittings and valves
so pressure drop along with line A-B will be :
0.019 * 30*1.2/100=0.006 pascal
As it is seen all the pipe sizes for steam lines are sufficient and they are in safe side fluid velocity,
maximum pressure drop is occurs in line A-B-D which its amount is (0.15 + 0.01 + 0.006 = 0.166 )
pascal which is negligible so there is sufficient steam pressure to carry out the condensate through
pipes, as an example through line M-L there is only 150 lb/hr which size 1 1/4 is sufficient for this
purpose[8].
As the maximum flow rate occurs through line C-D an D-B-A so calculation is done only for this case.
Point the finger that heat loss and flow rate for line C-D in the worst condition is 8400 lb/hr and by
using the condensate lines sizing table [8] via interpolation it is seen that pipe size 2 can carry out
9750 lb/hr flow rate of condense with pressure drop 1 psi per 100 ft of pipe. The length of piping
between points C and D is 82 meters so pressure drop of this line will be [82 / 0.3048 / 100 x 1 = 2.7 psi
] that is too low to hold up the flow.
As it is calculated in the pages before , in the worst condition maximum flow rate through the line
D-B-A is 9500 lb/hr and as it is said before pipe size 2 can carry out 9750 lb/hr flow rate of
condense with pressure drop 1 psi per 100 ft of pipe[8]. The length of piping between points D and A is
68 meters so pressure drop of this line is maximum [68 / 0.3048 / 100 x 1 = 2.2 psi ]. So total pressure
drop of condensate line will be 2.7 + 2.2 = 4.9 psi (as it is calculated pressure drop of steam is too low to
enter the total pressure drop) which this amount is negligible too.
