Mandatory Tests
In the Civil Engineering projects large quantity of different materials are used andit necessary that these materials are tested according to a certain set pattern of tests and within desirable frequency of testing in order that he quality of finalproduct is maintained. A list of recommended mandatory tests for differentbuilding materials is given in Tables below:-
NOTE -- Water used for mixing and curing shall be clean and free from injuriousquantities of alkalies, acids, oils, salts, sugar, organic materials, vegetable growthor other substance that may be deleterious to bricks, stone, concrete or steel.Potable water is generally considered satisfactory for mixing. The Ph value of water shall be not less than. The following concentrations represent the maximumpermissible values: (of deleterious materials in water).
Limits of Acidity: To neutralize 100ml sample of water, usingphenolphthalein as an indicator, it should not require more than 5ml of 0.02normal NaOH. The details of test shall be as given in IS 3025 (part 22).

Limits of Alkalinity: To neturalise 100ml sample of water, using mixedindicator, it should not require more than 25ml of 0.02 normal H2SO4. Thedetails of tests shall be as given in IS 3025 (part 23).
Percentage of Solids: Maximum permissible limits of solids when tested inaccordance with IS 3025 shall be as under:Organic 200mg/ litreInorganic 3000 mg/ litreSulphates 400 mg/ litreChlorides 2000 mg/ litre for concrete not containing embedded steel and500 mg./ltr for reinforced concrete work.Suspended matter 2000 mg/ litreThe physical and chemical properties of ground water shall be tested along withsoil investigation and if the water is not found conforming to the requirements of IS 456-2000, The tender documents shall clearly specify that the contractor has toarrange good quality water for construction indicating the source.(i)
Water found satisfactory for mixing is also suitable for curing. However, water used for curing shall not produce any objectionable stain orunsightly deposit on the surface.(ii)
Sea water shall not be used for mixing or curing(iii)Water from each source shall be tested before the commencement of thework and thereafter once in every three months till the completion of thework. In case of ground water, testing shall also be done for differentpoints of drawdown. Water from each source shall be got tested during thedry season before monsoon and again after monsoon.
