It's my great pleasure to welcome you5 today to the FTC.6 (Discussion off the record.)7 MS. IPPOLITO: Well, thank you very much for8 being here. I would like to welcome you to the FTC.9 This is a Roundtable on the Economics of the10 Pharmaceutical Industry.11 As I'm sure you know, this is a very important12 market for us. The Federal Trade Commission has the13 primary antitrust responsibility for pharmaceuticals,14 and so in that capacity, we review most mergers in the15 area. We review lots of contracts between branded16 products and generic products and other kinds of issues17 like that, and we look at how firms interact with the18 regulatory apparatus and occasionally pursue matters19 there.20 So it's been a very active area for us and one21 where we're spending quite a few resources, so we want22 to make sure that we have as good an understanding as we23 can of the industry.24 In addition, the FTC has primary federal25 responsibility for advertising, not pharmaceuticalFor The Record, Inc.(301) 870-8025 - www.ftrinc.net - (800) 921-5555
