Matthew Arnold was born in a village named Laleham. At six Arnold was moved to Rugby school where his father Dr. Thomas Arnold had become headmaster. Dr. Arnold was a clergyman ,an eminent historian and a leader in the religious controversies of the time. But Mat was always contrasted with his father.

In 1847 he took the post of private secretary to Lord Lansdowne and in 1857 he became an inspector of the schools. In 1849 he published the first of his volumes of poetry .then he was elected to the professorship of poetry at oxford.

Arnold s career as a writer can be divided into four period:

In 1860s he turned aside to literary criticism His criticism : Essays in Criticism (1865 and 1888): in two volumes Function of criticism Culture and Anarchy
The criticism of society culminated in Culture and Anarchy (1869) and Friendship s Garland(1871)

His life long attacks against the inadequacies of puritanism made arnold one of the most anti-victorian figures of the victorian age.
