Ronald Opus died from a shotgun wound to the head. He, however, had jumped from the top of a ten-storey building to commit suicide. As hefell past the ninth floor, a shotgun blast through a window killed himinstantly. A safety net had been installed at the eighth floor an Opuswould not have been able to commit suicide. An elderly coupleoccupied the room from whence the shotgun blast emanated. Theywere arguing vigorously, and he was threatening her with a shotgun. When the man pulled the trigger, he missed his wife and the bulletstruck Opus instead. The old couple maintained they thought theshotgun was unloaded. The old man said it was his long-standing habitto threaten his wife with the unloaded shotgun. Therefore, Opus’skilling appeared to be an accident. Investigation turned up a witnesswho had seen the old couple’s son loading the shotgun. The womanhad cut off her son’s financial support and the son loaded the gunhoping his father would shoot his mother. Further investigationrevealed that the son was, in fact, Ronald Opus. Despondent over theloss of financial support, he jumped off the building, only to be killed bya shotgun blast. The son had actually murdered himself, so the casewas closed as suicide.
Test of CivilizationWhere women are honoured, there the gods are delighted, but where thy areinsulted, all sacred rites become futile.Manu Smrithi. In Jivaka’s pleasant woodland walked Subha the Sister. A gallant met her there and barred the way. To him thus spake Subha, ‘What have I done tooffend thee, that thus in my path thou comest?....’ ‘ Young art thou, maiden, and faultless - what seekest thou in the holy life? … come, in the blossomingwoodland seek we our pleasure ….’ ‘What now to thee, in this carrion-filled,grave-filling carcass so fragile seen by thee, seemeth to warrant the doctrinethou speakest?....’ ‘yes has thou like the gazelle’s …. Which feedeth thedepths of my passion. Shrined in thy dazzling, immaculate face as in calyx of the lotus…’ ‘ Thou art blind! Thou chasest a sham. What is this eye but a littleball lodged in the fork of a hollow tree, bubble of film anointed with teare-brine, exuding slime-drops?’ Forthwith the maiden so lovely tore out her eyeand gave it to him: ‘Here! Take thou thine eye!’ Nor sinned she, her heart unobstructed. Straightaway the lust in him ceased and he her pardonimplored. Freed from molesting, the Sister went on her way to the Buddha…Thereafter, her sight was restored to her.- Psalm of Sister Subha.Social science affirms that a woman’s place in society marks the level of civilization. –Elizabeth C Stanton.Wednesday, January 29, 2003Test of Power
