Chapter One
Will Smith sat on his sofa located in his living room of his newapartment, comfortably dressed in a sweater and simple pair of blueand gray sweat pants with his school’s ULA logo largely displayed onboth articles of clothing in blue with bright white lining around eachletter. Reaching over to the coffee table in front of him, he grabbed hisnotebook and began looking through a few of his notes he hadscribbled down from his Human Sexuality and Sex Education class, oneof the classes he paid attention to along with his Philosophy class.Disappointed that he did not have Not to mention that he was able tolook over at a few girls’ notes while the professor wasn’t watching, among other things that the girls themselves did not catch him lookingat. Will casually yawned with his mouth wide open, knowing that in afew more hours he would have to report to his shift at the ULA StudentStore, better known as “The Peacock Stop”. Taking a minute to relax alittle before work, he sat his notebook down in his lap and lay backinto his seat, crossing his arms and calmly closing his eyes. Thememories from the past six years he spent with his Uncle Phil andAunt Viv began to rush back into his head. Will smiled as heremembered how much he had to go through to get his cousin Carltonto raise his hourly wage at the same job he was working now. Therewas also the time when Carlton finally met the woman of his dreamsat the ULA Student Store, only to have his heart shattered into millionsof pieces once he found out she was getting back with her husband.Carlton was not the only person to meet the woman of his dreamsthere. Will also happened to ask his former fiancée Lisa Wilkes out onhis first date with her. He wished that they could have stayed together, but due to differences in how they wanted to continue with theirrelationship they decided to end it at their wedding ceremony. Will andLisa stared in awe as their parents shockingly chose to get married, leaving the two of them no choice but to remain friends. Will decidedto change the subject, thinking back to the day he told Carlton that hehad discovered his father at ULA. Lou Smith, who ended up leavingWill once again after he announced to him that he found a new big jobfor him being a trucker, and that he would not have enough space forhim. Will’s hands clenched tightly into fists as he frowned at thatmemory, remembering how horrible he felt, not to mentionembarrassed as he ended up crying in his uncle’s shoulder about hisfather. At that moment, Will’s heart began to warm up as anotherperson who was special to him popped into his brain.Jackie.

Not realizing that the “Jacqueline” Carlton was talking about was thesame Jackie Ames he grew up with in West Philly until he saw her slowdancing in his cousin’s arms, Will’s heart fluttered with joy as heunconsciously ran over to Jackie, who did the same to Will as they heldeach other in a tight embrace. Not hearing Carlton’s frustrated yells of  “No!” filled with pain and sadness, he couldn’t believe that “his” Jackiehad arrived in his apartment – the same apartment he was sharingwith Carlton at the time. Will’s heart sank after remembering how itwas seeing Jackie for the last time before she returned to Philly, all of the arguments they had as well as the numerous rejections she gavehim when he showed interest in going out with her. Will thought theywere even when he lied about being sick when he instead opted to joinhis cousin Hilary at the Playboy Mansion and Jackie decided to turnhim down, not because he was being rude but because she knew inthe end that she was not the most important thing on his listcompared to the “Playboy bunnies” parading around Hugh Heffner’smansion. Will’s alarm clock on his watch began to beep, waking himout of his trip down memory lane. It was time for work. Will shook hishead, surprised that time flew by so fast yet he realized that he hadhis obligations to take care of, as well as preparing himself for the testhe had to study for tomorrow after work. Scooping up his blackbackpack sitting lazily next to him, Will picked up his notebook andshoved it inside, leaving out the front door and locking it. Steppingoutside, he walked out the front gate of his apartment and took a deepbreath of the surprisingly clean air that was around him. Glad that itwas Springtime, Will felt a little sympathy for his mother and his auntswho were still living in Philly, yet he shrugged it off knowing that heshould be thankful that he was basking in 65 degree weather whileothers were freezing their butts off. Walking down the street, he knewhe had about fifteen minutes before he would set foot on the ULAcampus. Feeling the breeze from multiple cars whizzing by, Willcancelled out the car motor sounds, the radios blasting rap and rockmusic as well as the few people shouting from their cars in frustrationdue to the sudden traffic in the street. A familiar face caught his eye, which caused Will to smile in surprise, not thinking that he would be inthis area at this time of the afternoon. Sitting on the bench at the busstop, he stood out from the crowd wearing a simple red, black andwhite stripped shirt with black pants. He also caught Will looking athim, smirking as he shouted out his name. “Sup Prince?”

“Sup Jazz?” Will responded as they did their familiar handshakefollowed, their usual simultaneous “psssssssh” spewing out theirmouths afterwards. “What are you doin’ here?”  “Well, a brotha’s got to do more DJ’in gigs in other places than justCompton and South Central! Plus, the S.W.A.T. team surrounded ourneighborhood again! A shame…” Jazz honestly shook his head, thinkingto himself how crazy it was they were still doing this to his house. “You ought to shoot by the crib after I get off work, man! Hang out likewe used to!” Will shouted over a few cars honking loudly in thebackground. “Plus…you won’t have to worry about my Uncle Phil!”  “Oh yeah…him…” Jazz said sarcastically, rolling his eyes underneath hisshades. “Where is Heavy P aka the Judicial Brotha anyway?”  “Oh he’s in New York for a while. They were talking about moving backhere in a few months or so. But yo, Jazz, I gotta run, man! I’ll holler atyou later!”  “Aight…well, tell your fine cousin Hilary I’m still interested! I don’t giveup so easily!”  “Aight, peace out man!” Will said as he continued on his way to ULA.After what seemed to be an eternity he arrived on the main campus, still amazed at how big the place is even though he had been astudent for three and a half years now. Thanks to Uncle Phil for helpingin financing his studies as well as his apartment, he was able to finishhis degree in Physical Education with a minor in Black History, something he had always wanted to learn about. He laughed to himself as he remembered how he had wanted to learn about black history inschool, only to have his own Aunt Viv teaching his class. Steppinginside the ULA Student Store, he went into the backroom and clockedin, putting on his blue ULA Student Store vest and little “peacock hat”,something he hated to wear but knew it was policy to do so. Plus itdidn’t hurt that he would be receiving a reasonable wage workingthere, so the pros outweighed the cons. Making his way over to thecounter, he straightened out his vest, making sure it was straight andnot out of wack in case a fine “honey” decided to make her way over.Turning around, he realized that he had one last adjustment to make.Fix his pants zipper. Grunting, he felt embarrassed for walking aroundL.A. with his fly open and not even Jazz out of all people recognized
