Chapter 6 Three Magi are led by a star in theeast to Judaea, and, finding Jesus, makeobeisance to him and gifts.
In the reign of Herod, king of Judaea, when Jesuswas born, three magi in the parts of the east wereobserving the stars of heaven. Whereuponappeared to them a star of great brightness,wherefore having concluded among themselves,they came to Judaea, guided by the star, whichwent before them, and having arrived atJerusalem they asked where was born the King ofthe Jews. And when Herod heard this he wasaffrighted, and all the city was troubled. Herodtherefore called together the priests and thescribes, saying: 'Where should Christ be born?'They answered that he should be born inBethlehem; for thus it is written by the prophet:'And thou, Bethlehem, art not little among theprinces of Judah: for out of thee shall come forth aleader, who shall lead my people Israel.'Herod accordingly called together the magi andasked them concerning their coming: whoanswered that they had seen a star in the east,which had guided them thither, wherefore theywished with gifts to worship this new Kingmanifested by his star.Then said Herod: 'Go to Bethlehem and searchout with all diligence concerning the child; andwhen ye have found him, come and tell it to me,because I also would faincome and worship him.' And this he spakedeceitfully.
Chapter 7 The visitation of Jesus by magi, andtheir return to their own country, with thewarning of Jesus given to them in a dream.
The magi therefore departed out of Jerusalem,and lo, the star which appeared to them in the eastwent before them. Seeing the star the magi werefilled with gladness. And so having come toBethlehem, outside the city, they saw the starstanding still above the inn where Jesus was born.The magi therefore went thither, and entering thedwelling found the child with his mother, andbending down they did obeisance to him. And themagi presented unto him spices, with silver andgold, recounting to the virgin all that they hadseen. Whereupon, while sleeping, they werewarned by the child not to go to Herod: sodeparting by another way they returned totheir own home, announcing all that they hadseen in Judaea.
Chapter 8 Jesus is carried in flight toEgypt, and herod massacres the innocentchildren.
Herod seeing that the magi did not return,believed himself mocked of them; whereuponhe determined to put to death the child thatwas born. But behold while Joseph wassleeping there appeared to him the angel ofthe Lord, saying: 'Arise up quickly, and takethe child with his mother and go into Egypt forHerod willeth to slay him'. Joseph arose withgreat fear, and took Mary with the child, andthey went into Egypt, and there they abodeuntil the death of Herod: who, believinghimself derided of the magi, sent his soldiersto slay all the new-born children in Bethlehem.The soldiers therefore came and slew all thechildren that were there, as Herod hadcommanded them. Whereby were fulfilled thewords of the prophet, saying: 'Lamentationand great weeping are there in Ramah;Rachel lamenteth for her sons, but consolationis not given her because they are not.'
Chapter 9 Jesus, heving returned toJudaea, holds a wondrous disputation withdoctors, having come to the age of twelveyears.
When Herod was dead, behold the angel ofthe Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph,saying: 'Return into Judaea, for they are deadthat willed the death of the child.' Josephtherefore took the child with Mary (he havingcome to the age of seven years), and came toJudaea; whence, hearing that Archelaus, sonof Herod, was reigning in Judaea, he went intoGalilee, fearing to remain in Judaea; and theywent to dwell at Nazareth. The child grew ingrace andwisdom before God and before men.Jesus, having come to the age of twelveyears, went up with Mary and Joseph toJerusalem, to worship there according to thelaw of the Lord written in the book of Moses.When their prayers were ended they departed,having lost Jesus, because they thought that
