GOSPEL OF BARNABASOpening- True Gospel of Jesus, called Christ,a new prophet sent by God to the world:according to the description of Barnabas hisapostle.
Barnabas, apostle of Jesus the Nazarene, calledChrist, to all them that dwell upon the earthdesireth peace and consolation.Dearly beloved the great and wonderful God hathduring these past days visited us by his prophetJesus Christ in great mercy of teaching andmiracles, by reason whereof many, beingdeceived of Satan, under presence of piety, arepreaching most impious doctrine, calling Jesusson of God, repudiating the circumcision ordainedof God for ever, and permitting every uncleanmeat: among whom also Paul hath been deceived,whereof I speak not without grief; for which cause Iam writing that truth which I have seen and heard,in the intercourse that I have had with Jesus, inorder that ye may be saved, and not be deceivedof Satan and perish in the judgment of God.Therefore beware of every one that preachethunto you new doctrine contrary to that which Iwrite, that ye may be saved eternally. The greatGod be with you and guard you from Satan andfrom every evil. Amen.
Chapter 1 The angel Gabriel visits Virgin Maryconcerning the birth of Jesus.
In these last years a virgin called Mary, of thelineage of David, of the tribe of Judah, was visitedby the angel Gabriel from God. This virgin, living inall holiness without any offense, being blameless,and abiding in prayer with fastings, being one dayalone, there entered into her chamber the angelGabriel, and he saluted her, saying: 'God be withthee, O Mary'.The virgin was affrighted at the appearance of theangel; but the angel comforted her, saying: 'Fearnot, Mary, for thou hast found favour with God,who hath chosen thee to be mother of a prophet,whom he will send to the people of Israel in orderthat they may walk in his laws with truth of heart.'The virgin answered: 'Now how shall I bring forthsons, seeing I know not a man?' The angelanswered: 'O Mary, God who made man without aman is able to generate in thee man with- outa man, because with him nothing isimpossible.'Mary answered: 'I know that God is almighty,therefore his will be done.' The angelanswered: 'Now be conceived in thee theprophet, whom thou shalt name Jesus: andthou shalt keep him from wine and from strongdrink and from every unclean meat, becausethe child is an holy one of God.' Mary bowedherself with humility, saying:'Behold the handmaid of God, be it doneaccording to thy word.'The angel departed, and the virgin glorifiedGod, saying: 'Know, O my soul, the greatnessof God, and exult, my spirit, in God mySaviour; for he hath regarded the lowliness ofhis handmaiden, insomuch that I shall becalled blessed by all the nations, for he that ismighty hath made me great, and blessed behis holy name. For his mercy extendeth fromgeneration to generation of them that fear him.Mighty hath he made his hand, and he hathscattered the proud in the imagination of hisheart. He hath put down the mighty from theirseat, and hath exalted the humble. Him whohath been hungry hath he filled with goodthings, and the rich he hath sent empty away.For he keepeth in memory the promises madeto Abraham and to his son for ever'.
Chapter 2 The warning of the angelGabriel given to Joseph concerning theconception of the Virgin Mary.
Mary having known the will of God, fearing thepeople, lest they should take offense at herbeing great with child, and should stone her asguilty of fornication, chose a companion of herown lineage, a man by name called Joseph, ofblameless life: for he as a righteous manfeared God and served him with fastings andprayers, living by the works of his hands, forhe was a carpenter. Such a man the virginknowing, chose him for her companion andrevealed to him the divine counsel.Joseph being a righteous man, when heperceived that Mary was great with child, wasminded to put her away because he fearedGod. Behold, whilst he slept, he was rebukedby the angel of God, saying 'O Joseph, why

art thou minded to put away Mary thy wife? Knowthat whatsoever hath been wrought in her hath allbeen done by the will of God. The virgin shall bringforth a son, whom thou shall call by the nameJesus; whom thou shalt keep from wine andstrong drink and from every unclean meat,because he is an holy one of God from hismother's womb. He is a prophet of God sent untothe people of Israel, in order that he may convertJudah to his heart, and that Israel may walk in thelaw of the Lord, as it is written in the law of Moses.He shall come with great power, which God shallgive him, and shall work great miracles, wherebymany shall be saved'. Joseph, arising from sleep,gave thanks to God, and abode with Mary all hislife, serving God with all sincerity.
Chapter 3 Wonderful birth of Jesus, andappearance of angels praising God.
There reigned at that time in Judaea Herod, bydecree of Caesar Augustus, and Pilate wasgovernor in the priesthood of Annas andCaiaphas. Wherefore, by decree of Augustus, allthe world was enrolled; wherefore each one wentto his own country, and they presentedthemselves by their own tribes to be enrolled.Joseph accordingly departed from Nazareth, a cityof Galilee, with Mary his wife, great with child, togo to Bethlehem (for that it was his city, he beingof the lineage of David), in order that he might beenrolled according to the decree of Caesar.Joseph having arrived at Bethlehem, for that thecity was small, and great the multitude of themthat were strangers there, he found no place,wherefore he took lodging outside the city in alodging made for a shepherds' shelter. WhileJoseph abode there the days were fulfilled forMary to bring forth.The virgin was surrounded by a light exceedingbright, and brought forth her son without pain,whom she took in her arms, and wrapping him inswaddling-clothes, laid him in the manger,because there was no room in the inn. Therecame with gladness a great multitude of angels tothe inn, blessing God and announcing peace tothem that fear God. Mary and Joseph praisedthe Lord for the birth of Jesus, and with greatest joy nurtured him.
Chapter 4 Angels announced to the shepherdsthe birth of Jesus, and they, after having foundhim, announce him.
At that time the shepherds were watching overtheir flock, as is their custom. And, behold,they were surrounded by an exceeding brightlight, out of which appeared to them an angel,who blessed God. The shepherds were filledwith fear by reason of the sudden light and theappearance of the angel; whereupon the angelof the Lord comforted them, saying:'Behold, I announce to you a great joy, forthere is born in the city of David a child who isa prophet of the Lord; who bringeth greatsalvation to the house of Israel. Thechild ye shall find in the manger, with hismother, who blesseth God.'And when he had said this there came a greatmultitude of angels blessing God, announcingpeace to them that have good will. When theangels were departed, the shepherds spakeamong themselves, saying: 'Let us go evenunto Bethlehem, and see the word which Godby his angel hath announced to us.' Therecame many shepherds to Bethlehem seekingthe new-born babe. and they found outside thecity the child that was born. according to theword of the angel. lying in the manger.They therefore made obeisance to him, andgave to the mother that which they had,announcing to her what they had heard andseen. Mary therefore kept all these things inher heart, and Joseph [likewise], giving thanksto God. The shepherds returned to their flock,announcing to everyone how great a thingthey had seen. And so the whole hill-countryof Judaea was filled with fear, and every manlaid up this word in his heart, saying: 'What,think we, shall this child be?'
Chapter 5 Circumcision of Jesus
When the eight days were fulfilled according tothe law of the Lord, as it is written in the bookof Moses, they took the child and carried himto the temple to circumcise him. And so theycircumcised the child, and gave him the nameJesus, as the angel of the Lord had saidbefore he was conceived in the womb. Maryand Joseph perceived that the child mustneeds be for the salvation and ruin of many.Wherefore they feared God, and kept the childwith fear of God.

Chapter 6 Three Magi are led by a star in theeast to Judaea, and, finding Jesus, makeobeisance to him and gifts.
In the reign of Herod, king of Judaea, when Jesuswas born, three magi in the parts of the east wereobserving the stars of heaven. Whereuponappeared to them a star of great brightness,wherefore having concluded among themselves,they came to Judaea, guided by the star, whichwent before them, and having arrived atJerusalem they asked where was born the King ofthe Jews. And when Herod heard this he wasaffrighted, and all the city was troubled. Herodtherefore called together the priests and thescribes, saying: 'Where should Christ be born?'They answered that he should be born inBethlehem; for thus it is written by the prophet:'And thou, Bethlehem, art not little among theprinces of Judah: for out of thee shall come forth aleader, who shall lead my people Israel.'Herod accordingly called together the magi andasked them concerning their coming: whoanswered that they had seen a star in the east,which had guided them thither, wherefore theywished with gifts to worship this new Kingmanifested by his star.Then said Herod: 'Go to Bethlehem and searchout with all diligence concerning the child; andwhen ye have found him, come and tell it to me,because I also would faincome and worship him.' And this he spakedeceitfully.
Chapter 7 The visitation of Jesus by magi, andtheir return to their own country, with thewarning of Jesus given to them in a dream.
The magi therefore departed out of Jerusalem,and lo, the star which appeared to them in the eastwent before them. Seeing the star the magi werefilled with gladness. And so having come toBethlehem, outside the city, they saw the starstanding still above the inn where Jesus was born.The magi therefore went thither, and entering thedwelling found the child with his mother, andbending down they did obeisance to him. And themagi presented unto him spices, with silver andgold, recounting to the virgin all that they hadseen. Whereupon, while sleeping, they werewarned by the child not to go to Herod: sodeparting by another way they returned totheir own home, announcing all that they hadseen in Judaea.
Chapter 8 Jesus is carried in flight toEgypt, and herod massacres the innocentchildren.
 Herod seeing that the magi did not return,believed himself mocked of them; whereuponhe determined to put to death the child thatwas born. But behold while Joseph wassleeping there appeared to him the angel ofthe Lord, saying: 'Arise up quickly, and takethe child with his mother and go into Egypt forHerod willeth to slay him'. Joseph arose withgreat fear, and took Mary with the child, andthey went into Egypt, and there they abodeuntil the death of Herod: who, believinghimself derided of the magi, sent his soldiersto slay all the new-born children in Bethlehem.The soldiers therefore came and slew all thechildren that were there, as Herod hadcommanded them. Whereby were fulfilled thewords of the prophet, saying: 'Lamentationand great weeping are there in Ramah;Rachel lamenteth for her sons, but consolationis not given her because they are not.'
Chapter 9 Jesus, heving returned toJudaea, holds a wondrous disputation withdoctors, having come to the age of twelveyears.
When Herod was dead, behold the angel ofthe Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph,saying: 'Return into Judaea, for they are deadthat willed the death of the child.' Josephtherefore took the child with Mary (he havingcome to the age of seven years), and came toJudaea; whence, hearing that Archelaus, sonof Herod, was reigning in Judaea, he went intoGalilee, fearing to remain in Judaea; and theywent to dwell at Nazareth. The child grew ingrace andwisdom before God and before men.Jesus, having come to the age of twelveyears, went up with Mary and Joseph toJerusalem, to worship there according to thelaw of the Lord written in the book of Moses.When their prayers were ended they departed,having lost Jesus, because they thought that
