GOSPEL OF BARNABAS
Opening-True Gospel of Jesus, called Christ, a newprophet sent by God to the world:according to the description of Barnabashis apostle.
Barnabas, apostle of Jesus the Nazarene,called Christ, to all them that dwell upon theearth desireth peace and consolation.Dearly beloved the great and wonderfulGod hath during these past days visited usby his prophet Jesus Christ in great mercy ofteaching and miracles, by reason whereofmany, being deceived of Satan, underpresence of piety, are preaching mostimpious doctrine, calling Jesus son of God,repudiating the circumcision ordained ofGod for ever, and permitting every uncleanmeat: among whom also Paul hath beendeceived, whereof I speak not without grief;for which cause I am writing that truthwhich I have seen and heard, in theintercourse that I have had with Jesus, inorder that ye may be saved, and not bedeceived of Satan and perish in the judgment of God. Therefore beware of everyone that preacheth unto you new doctrinecontrary to that which I write, that ye maybe saved eternally. The great God be withyou and guard you from Satan and fromevery evil. Amen.
Chapter 1The angel Gabriel visits Virgin Maryconcerning the birth of Jesus.
In these last years a virgin called Mary, ofthe lineage of David, of the tribe of Judah,was visited by the angel Gabriel from God.This virgin, living in all holiness withoutany offense, being blameless, and abiding inprayer with fastings, being one day alone,there entered into her chamber the angelGabriel, and he saluted her, saying: 'God bewith thee, O Mary'.The virgin was affrighted at the appearanceof the angel; but the angel comforted her,saying: 'Fear not, Mary, for thou hast foundfavour with God, who hath chosen thee tobe mother of a prophet, whom he will sendto the people of Israel in order that they maywalk in his laws with truth of heart.'The virgin answered: 'Now how shall Ibring forth sons, seeing I know not a man?'The angel answered: 'O Mary, God whomade man without a man is able to generatein thee man with- out a man, because withhim nothing is impossible.'Mary answered: 'I know that God isalmighty, therefore his will be done.' Theangel answered: 'Now be conceived in theethe prophet, whom thou shalt name Jesus:and thou shalt keep him from wine andfrom strong drink and from every uncleanmeat, because the child is an holy one ofGod.' Mary bowed herself with humility,saying:'Behold the handmaid of God, be it doneaccording to thy word.'The angel departed, and the virgin glorifiedGod, saying: 'Know, O my soul, thegreatness of God, and exult, my spirit, inGod my Saviour; for he hath regarded thelowliness of his handmaiden, insomuch thatI shall be called blessed by all the nations,for he that is mighty hath made me great,and blessed be his holy name. For his mercyextendeth from generation to generation ofthem that fear him. Mighty hath he made hishand, and he hath scattered the proud in theimagination of his heart. He hath put downthe mighty from their seat, and hath exaltedthe humble. Him who hath been hungryhath he filled with good things, and the richhe hath sent empty away. For he keepeth inmemory the promises made to Abrahamand to his son for ever'.

Chapter 2The warning of the angel Gabriel given to Joseph concerning the conception of theVirgin Mary.
Mary having known the will of God, fearingthe people, lest they should take offense ather being great with child, and should stoneher as guilty of fornication, chose acompanion of her own lineage, a man byname called Joseph, of blameless life: for heas a righteous man feared God and servedhim with fastings and prayers, living by theworks of his hands, for he was a carpenter.Such a man the virgin knowing, chose himfor her companion and revealed to him thedivine counsel. Joseph being a righteous man, when heperceived that Mary was great with child,was minded to put her away because hefeared God. Behold, whilst he slept, he wasrebuked by the angel of God, saying 'O Joseph, why art thou minded to put awayMary thy wife? Know that whatsoever hathbeen wrought in her hath all been done bythe will of God. The virgin shall bring fortha son, whom thou shall call by the name Jesus; whom thou shalt keep from wine andstrong drink and from every unclean meat,because he is an holy one of God from hismother's womb. He is a prophet of God sentunto the people of Israel, in order that hemay convert Judah to his heart, and thatIsrael may walk in the law of the Lord, as itis written in the law of Moses. He shall comewith great power, which God shall give him,and shall work great miracles, wherebymany shall be saved'. Joseph, arising fromsleep, gave thanks to God, and abode withMary all his life, serving God with allsincerity.
Chapter 3 Wonderful birth of Jesus, and appearanceof angels praising God.
There reigned at that time in Judaea Herod,by decree of Caesar Augustus, and Pilatewas governor in the priesthood of Annasand Caiaphas. Wherefore, by decree ofAugustus, all the world was enrolled;wherefore each one went to his owncountry, and they presented themselves bytheir own tribes to be enrolled. Josephaccordingly departed from Nazareth, a cityof Galilee, with Mary his wife, great withchild, to go to Bethlehem (for that it was hiscity, he being of the lineage of David), inorder that he might be enrolled according tothe decree of Caesar. Joseph having arrivedat Bethlehem, for that the city was small,and great the multitude of them that werestrangers there, he found no place,wherefore he took lodging outside the cityin a lodging made for a shepherds' shelter.While Joseph abode there the days werefulfilled for Mary to bring forth.The virgin was surrounded by a lightexceeding bright, and brought forth her sonwithout pain, whom she took in her arms,and wrapping him in swaddling-clothes,laid him in the manger, because there wasno room in the inn. There came withgladness a great multitude of angels to theinn, blessing God and announcing peace tothem that fear God. Mary and Josephpraised the Lord for the birth of Jesus, andwith greatest joy nurtured him.
Chapter 4Angels announced to the shepherds thebirth of Jesus, and they, after having foundhim, announce him.
At that time the shepherds were watchingover their flock, as is their custom. And,behold, they were surrounded by anexceeding bright light, out of whichappeared to them an angel, who blessedGod. The shepherds were filled with fear byreason of the sudden light and theappearance of the angel; whereupon theangel of the Lord comforted them, saying:
'Behold, I announce to you a great joy, for thereis born in the city of David a child who is a prophet of the Lord; who bringeth great salvation

to the house of Israel. The child ye shall find inthe manger, with his mother, who blesseth God.'
And when he had said this there came agreat multitude of angels blessing God,announcing peace to them that have goodwill. When the angels were departed, theshepherds spake among themselves, saying:'Let us go even unto Bethlehem, and see theword which God by his angel hathannounced to us.' There came manyshepherds to Bethlehem seeking the new-born babe. and they found outside the citythe child that was born. according to theword of the angel. lying in the manger.They therefore made obeisance to him, andgave to the mother that which they had,announcing to her what they had heard andseen. Mary therefore kept all these things inher heart, and Joseph [likewise], givingthanks to God. The shepherds returned totheir flock, announcing to everyone howgreat a thing they had seen. And so thewhole hill-country of Judaea was filled withfear, and every man laid up this word in hisheart, saying: 'What, think we, shall thischild be?'
Chapter 5Circumcision of Jesus
When the eight days were fulfilledaccording to the law of the Lord, as it iswritten in the book of Moses, they took thechild and carried him to the temple tocircumcise him. And so they circumcised thechild, and gave him the name Jesus, as theangel of the Lord had said before he wasconceived in the womb. Mary and Josephperceived that the child must needs be forthe salvation and ruin of many. Whereforethey feared God, and kept the child withfear of God.
Chapter 6 Three Magi are led by a star inthe east to Judaea, and, finding Jesus, makeobeisance to him and gifts.
In the reign of Herod, king of Judaea, when Jesus was born, three magi in the parts ofthe east were observing the stars of heaven.Whereupon appeared to them a star of greatbrightness, wherefore having concludedamong themselves, they came to Judaea,guided by the star, which went before them,and having arrived at Jerusalem they askedwhere was born the King of the Jews. Andwhen Herod heard this he was affrighted,and all the city was troubled. Herodtherefore called together the priests and thescribes, saying: 'Where should Christ beborn?' They answered that he should beborn in Bethlehem; for thus it is written bythe prophet:
'And thou, Bethlehem, art not little among the princes of Judah: for out of thee shall come forth aleader, who shall lead my people Israel.'
Herod accordingly called together the magiand asked them concerning their coming:who answered that they had seen a star inthe east, which had guided them thither,wherefore they wished with gifts to worshipthis new King manifested by his star.Then said Herod: 'Go to Bethlehem andsearch out with all diligence concerning thechild; and when ye have found him, comeand tell it to me, because I also would faincome and worship him.' And this he spakedeceitfully.
Chapter 7 The visitation of Jesus by magi, and theirreturn to their own country, with thewarning of Jesus given to them in a dream.
The magi therefore departed out of Jerusalem, and lo, the star which appearedto them in the east went before them. Seeingthe star the magi were filled with gladness.And so having come to Bethlehem, outsidethe city, they saw the star standing stillabove the inn where Jesus was born. The
