qatar University (qU) president, sheikha abdUlla al-misnaddetailed theUniversity’s plans for the academic year a coUple of months back. she firstfocUsed on its recent achievement: 4,000 new recrUits – a hUGe35.7%increaseon last year’s fiGUres;47%improvement in stUdent Gpa; and an increase inpUblished research. bUt what was iGnored was the UnnatUrally low nUmberof male stUdents who were reGisterinG. this year755more female stUdentshave joined qU than male stUdents. while this phenomenon has been recordedprevioUsly, this year’s fiGUres seem to reflect a hiGher disparity.what makes these fiGUres worrisome is another stUdy, one that points at thedeplorably low percentaGe of qatari male enrolment in hiGher edUcation28%, almost half the rate for qatari females –54%. the fact that female enrolment is hiGher than male enrolment isn’t UniqUe, as it’s seen in mostcoUntries, bUt in no other coUntry is the disparity in fiGUres so conspicUoUs.

The report, prepared by Sheikh Hamad bin Jabor bin Jassim AlThani, President o Qatar Statistics Authority (QSA) was a study presented to the Board o Regents o QU. An example o the highlighted phenomenon is the act that in2011 there were no Qatari male graduates in the scientic disci-plines o the Faculty o Arts and Sciences.I students’ opting out o higher education at QU is a commonphenomenon, then considering the act that the institutions within Qatar Foundation (QF) are much more competitive, thereshould be more such instances at the QF institutions. A 21-year-old Qatari, Yaea Al-Yaei, a graduate rom VCUQ,also talked about his experience during his student years.“I know two Qatari males who were studying in Texas A&MQatar, and during their sophomore year they couldn’t take thepressure any more. They dropped out and went to QU to study engineering. Since you couldn’t transer the grades that they gothere, they had to start rom the beginning again,” he says. Al-Yaei agrees that there is stress involved when it comesto studying in colleges here in Qatar (QF, to be more specic).These colleges are rst-class universities, trying to keep theirreputation with strict rules and academics. The problem is that most o the students come romschools in Qatar that don’t prepare them or this intense ex-perience. He says: “Some students take the easy path, andabsent themselves rom classes and the reason or this islaziness more than anything else. They are just not prepared tohandle the pressure and the high level o preparation required inthese colleges.”
what is the reason behind this disconnect?
According to the report, motivation is one o the main reasonsbehind this low level o participation in higher education. Highabsenteeism, ew hours spent on homework and a lack o disci-
as an eXample of this phenomenonwas the fact that in 2011, therewere no qatari male GradUates inthe scientific disciplines of thefacUlty of arts and sciences.
