A genre of medical writing intended as an alternative to the exclusively Greek-based medical systems derivative from Galen was that called al-tibb al-nabawi, Prophetic Medicine. The authors were clerics, rather than physicians, advocating the traditional medical practices of the Prophet Muhammad's day and those mentioned in the Qur'an over the medical ideas assimilated from Hellenistic society, thereby producing a guide to medical therapy acceptable to the religiously orthodox. Therapy consisted of diet and simple drugs (especially honey), bloodletting, and cautery, but no surgery. Other topics included fevers, leprosy, plague, poisonous bites, protection from night-flying insects, protection against the evil eye, rules for coitus, theories of embryology, proper conduct of physicians, and treatment of minor illnesses such as headaches, nosebleed, cough and colic. It was prohibited to drink wine or use soporific drugs as medicaments. The treatises also provided numerous prayers and pious invocations to be used by the devout patient, with the occasional amulet and talisman, and they were particularly popular in the 13th to 15th centuries, with some still available today in modern printings.

the Prophet's Guidance on Treating

Wounds and Cuts
In the Sahihan it is narrated that Sahl Ibn Sa'd [Radhiallahu Anhu (RA) /may Allah be pleased with him] was asked about how the Messenger'sinjuries in the battle of Uhud were treated. Sahl said, "The Prophet's facewas injured, his tooth was broken and the helmet he was wearing wassmashed on his head. Fatimah (RA) the daughter of the Messenger of Allah [Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam (SAWS) / peace be upon him] waswashing the blood off while 'Ali (RA) was pouring water on her handswith his shield. When Fatimah (RA) realized that the bleeding did not stop, she took aburned mat (of palm leaves) and inserted the ash in the wound of Allah'sMessenger and the bleeding stopped." The ashes of burnt palm leavesare very effective in stopping bleeding, because it is a strong dryingagent and because it has the least burning effect (on the exposed skin).Other strong drying remedies have a burning effect on the skin and causethe blood to be irritated and the bleeding to intensify.Further, when the ashes of palm leaves are applied alone or mixed withvinegar in a bleeding nose, it will stop the bleeding. The author of Al-Qanun said, "Al-Bardi (Papyrus) is effective in stopping bleeding andcoating exposed flesh when it is placed on a wound. In old Egypt, paperwas made of the Bardi, which has a cold, dry condition. Bardi ash iseffective in treating oral fungus and infection, hemoptysis (spitting upblood) and also prevents malignant infections from spreading."The Prophet's guidance using honey, cupping and cauterizing asremediesAl-Bukhari narrated that the Prophet (SAWS) said: "There is cure inthree substances, a drink of honey, a slash with a knife used for cuppingand cauterizing by fire. I forbid my Nation from cauterizing by fire."Abu 'Abdullah Al-Maziri said plethoric (excessive substances) conditionsare either sanguineous (bloody), bilious, phlegmy, or melancholic. Curingsanguineous plethora entails extracting the blood. If plethora was fromthe other three types, its cure is in softening the stool as warranted foreach disease. The Prophet (SAWS) has indicated that honey is used as alaxative and that cupping is used to extract [septic] blood. Some peoplesaid that when the slash by a cupping knife does not work, the last resortis branding by fire (cauterizing). The Prophet (SAWS) mentioned branding by fire as a last resort whenthe body has a strong resistance against medicine, rendering itineffective. The Prophet (SAWS) then said: "I forbid my Ummah (MuslimNation) from branding by fire (cauterizing)," and in another narration, "Ido not like to be branded by fire." Cauterizing by fire should be the lastresort and only used when warranted. The fire should not be the firstchoice because of the intense pain it causes and which will be used toremove a lesser pain! Some doctors said that diseases related to the temperament are eithermaterial or non-material. The material types are either cold, hot, wet or
