Working Paper on Astrological Physiognomy: Empirical Tests of the Leo Rising Decan

Astrological sign- and decan-based rules for determining the shape of the face were applied to a sample of thirty-six horoscopes. Rules tested include aphorisms taken from traditional authorities as well as composite drawings from a contemporary sign-based model by John Willner. Horoscopes were selected with known Ascendants placed in the Leo rising decan according to the Hindu system. In a majority of cases, the Sun's influence as ruler of the rising decan was the dominant predictor of facial appearance. The Suns sign placement most accurately predicted the type of solar influence, not the Suns intrinsic nature. Placement of planets and/or Lunar Nodes in the Ascendant sometimes interfered with the ability of the Sun as ruler of the rising decan to predict the face. Suns placement in Cancer and Mercury-ruled signs produced the most consistent exceptions to the rule which ties facial appearance to the rising decan and its ruler.

Astrological Physiognomy: Empirical Tests of the Leo Rising Decan
Objective This study tests the ability of the rising decan to predict the shape of the face. Establishing Study Parameters Which features to test? Given the variability of models for astrological physiognomy, I have made several assumptions in order to test a workable hypothesis which others can repeat using a wider sample. A literature review of astrological physiognomy suggests there may be three distinct features of human physiology predictable by astrology: (a) shape and features of the face frontal view, (b) shape of the face side profile view, and (c) body type. With headshots the easiest publicly available photographs to obtain, I have chosen to limit the study to first of the three listed physical features: shape and features of the face frontal view. Which models to use? Authors including Sahl, Haly, and Ibn Ezra indicate the rising decan is the best predictor of the face. As to choice of decan system, I select Hindu decans over Chaldean decans.1 Two sets of sign-based models will be used to link the rising decan with the appearance of the face: aphorisms from traditional authorities and John Willners 1991 model. What model parameters should be examined? Which factor contributes the greatest influence over facial appearance: the rising decan itself, the decan rulers planetary nature, or the decan rulers sign placement? What is the relative effect of the rising sign versus the rising decan on physiognomy? Haly says the Ascendant signifies the body and the rising sign signifies the face. If so, then the rising sign may not be important for determining the shape of the face.2 What is the effect of planets placed in the Ascendant on facial appearance? Most authors consider planet(s) placed in the Ascendant sign to strongly influence physiognomy; especially if the planet(s) have dignity and are positioned near the Ascendant degree. How well does Willners sign-based model predict the shape of the face? Finally, in order to further focus the study, I have chosen to limit the data sample to Leo rising decans. This decision introduces an additional control which allows examination of whether the Suns intrinsic nature, the Suns sign placement, or some other feature is responsible for the Suns contribution to facial appearance.

The majority of traditional authors preferred the Chaldean decans. Ibn Ezra, if his delineations of the Hindu decans are indicative, was the first traditional author to favor Hindu decans. Schoener was another. Among modern authors, Anrias employed the Hindu decans. Sign-based rules for Judging the Face: John Willner (1991)5

There are some features of Willners model which are consistent with traditional authorities. Example: Aphorisms state fixed signs are full (Taurus), round (Leo), large (Scorpio), and large (Aquarius). Except for Leo described as round, the full and large descriptors are arguably similar in spirit to Willners rectangular and square descriptors for fixed signs.

Summary of Findings: Empirical Tests of the Leo Rising Decan

1. It is the Suns sign placement which predicts the shape of the face. In no cases did the Suns intrinsic quality (a round face) contribute to the shape of the face itself. The Sun appears to contribute its roundness to curly hair or hairstyles with round silhouettes. 2. In 23 of 36 cases, the ruler of the rising decan (Sun) was the primary indicator of the face. Placement of the Sun in signs which do not aspect the Ascendant did not preclude the Sun from functioning as a physiognomy significator. 3. In 12 of 16 cases when the Ascendant contained no planets or Nodes, the rising decan was the primary indicator of the face. 4. In only 9 of 20 cases when planets and/or Nodes were placed in the Ascendant did the rising decan fail to predict the face. 5. In 7 of 13 cases when the ruler of the rising decan failed to predict the face, the Sun (rising decan ruler) was placed in mutable signs. Mercury-ruled Sun signs produced the greatest variability. The Suns placement in Cancer accounted for 2 of the other 6 cases. 6. Several examples favor the Ascendant as signifier for the physical body and the ruler of the rising decan as significator for the face. They include John DeLorean (Capricorn face + Aries body) and William Shirer (Pisces face + Sagittarius body). 7. Willners sign-based rules function well for cardinal and fixed signs, though I was unable to distinguish the proposed square descriptor for Aquarius from rectangular for other fixed signs. The rules performed poorly for mutable signs. An elongated rectangle for Gemini was not observed. For Sagittarius, triangular/diamond shapes were observed instead of an elongated rectangle. For Pisces, round shapes were observed instead of a fluid rectangle.
Suggested Issues for Further Research

1. There is a need to create a group of individuals who demonstrate close similarity to each sign which can be used as a teaching reference. Elsie Inglis (Leo) qualifies. 2. Planets placed in the sign which corresponds to the rising decan appear to play a role in physical appearance. (for an example see Matt Cvetic). What role these additional planet/sign placement play in physiognomy deserves additional attention. 3. Malefics placed in the Ascendant appear to inhibit the ability of the Ascendant or its ruler from manifesting physical characteristics. These cases appear to shift the primary determining factor of physical appearance to the rising decan. 4. If one accepts the same set of significators for physiognomy are valid for temperament assessment, then the ability of the Suns sign placement to predict the shape of the face casts doubt on the Suns season to influence temperament as proposed by Ptolemy.

The glyph for Aries mimics the face of the ram whose image forms the constellation Aries. The vertical line corresponds to the straight and elongated face; the two curves, the rams horn. As a body type, Aries is straight as an arrow and produces the most erect posture of any sign. As a cardinal sign, the force of Aries is centrifugal, a word whose Latin roots can be translated as fleeing from the center. As a fire sign, Aries is assigned the choleric temperament; for this reason the Aries body type is thin because its active motion implies many calories burned. Traditional sources describe Aries as long in the face with a broad forehead; analogous to the shape of the rams head. But the Aries chin does not form the end of a pointed triangle as do some mutable signs like Virgo. Willner gets it right with his description of the Aries facial type as bony ovate. Willner modifies an initial oval shape by lopping off both sides from the upper cheek to the chin. The effect is one of an inverted blunted arrowhead. The cheeks appear hollow -- not from emaciation associated with wasting diseases -- but from a lean and mean choleric temperament whose metabolism leaves no room for rounded cheeks.

Facial type matches Willners bony ovate model for Aries which is the Suns sign placement. Sun separates from Jupiter and applies to Saturn, both in Capricorn. Influence of Capricorn makes the chin more prominent which would otherwise recede if Aries was the sole influence on the facial type. Ascendant sign ruler Mars/Aquarius in a wide sextile to the Sun/Aries should produce a prominent forehead because this is the nature of Aquarius. It is difficult to distinguish the relative contribution to the broad forehead by either Aries or Mars/Aquarius, but given the closer aspect of the Sun to the Ascendant (over Mars), it seems that Aries is the primary cause of the broad forehead. The glyph for Taurus mimics the face and horns of the bull whose image forms the constellation Taurus. Descriptors such as broad, full, large, and heavy are commonly found in traditional sources. But unlike a heaviness which falls to the ground, Taurus descriptors connote stability and strength. As a fixed sign, the nature of Taurus is to hoard. With its ruler Venus assigned to pleasure, Taurus enjoys eating and sex. This is the reason why the sign is described as broad, full, large, and heavy: Taurus eats a lot and hoards its pleasure through additional folds of flesh. With respect to the face, traditional authors assign the large descriptor to specific features including the nostrils, mouth, and eyes. This reflects the Taurean bulls flaring nostrils and other facial features which appear somewhat gross, base, and out-of-proportion to overall facial metrics. For Willner, all fixed signs are square/rectangular shaped; for Taurus; soft rectangular. It seems that ruler Venus softens the edges around an otherwise purely rectangular shape.

What is notable about these three examples is that they share no apparent common features. Staudles face conforms to the bony ovate (Aries), Dillingers face is dominated by a large forehead (Aquarius), and Weingartners face is oval shaped (Libra). A horoscope review reveals Mars/Aries placed in the Ascendant for Staudle, Dillingers Saturn/Aquarius opposing the Ascendant, and Jupiter/Libra ruling Weingartners Ascendant. In theory these findings should not be a surprise because (1) a mutable sign rises, (2) the mutable sign is ruled by Mercury, and (3) Mercury moreso than any other planet mixes his significations with planets he aspects and signs where he is placed. This means as a first order condition, Mercury-ruled rising decans should show the greatest variability and be the most difficult to explain in empirical studies. Here is what theory offers for Gemini: Like Sagittarius, Gemini is one of the tallest signs; unlike Sagittarius which is more robust in constitution (think soccer players), Gemini is leaner. A human sign, Gemini is considered handsome and is noted for beauty of the eyes. Willner describes the Gemini facial type as 'elongated,' the same descriptor used for Sagittarius. My findings are different. So far, what I have seen with Gemini is the two frontal lobes of the brain emphasized by a receding hairline. This corresponds to the double-bodied nature of the mutable air sign. In addition, the Geminis intellectual curiosity often results in myopia because of much reading. Corrective eyewear is commonly worn and becomes an important facial feature.

The elongated face is common to both Aries and Gemini; it is difficult to ascertain which sign is responsible for the length in the face. Face appears as a bony ovate consistent with Willners Aries model. This finding suggests that the effect of Mars/Aries in the sign of his rulership conjunct the Ascendant takes precedence over the Gemini Sun as rising decan ruler. Are there any Gemini features here? Decan ruler Sun received by Mercury in his own sign appears strong enough to influence the face. My take: Staudle appears to have a receding hairline on both sides of his head which emphasizes the two upper lobes of the cranium, a common Gemini feature. Along with Aquarius and Pisces, Cancer is considered one of the short signs for estimating height. Limbs are indicated to be thick supported by large joints and bones especially in the lower body; the torso emphasizes the breasts in women and is indicated to be 'chesty' for males. The Cancer face is large, wide, and round, features sunken eyes, and is noted for a lack of uniformity in the teeth. Willner's facial model for Cancer is 'small ovate.' From my own observations, it is the Moons sign placement and configuration with other planets, not the Moon herself per se, which determines the physical appearance of Cancer decans. In this way, Cancer decans exhibit as much variability in appearance and are as difficult to recognize as Mercury-ruled decans. I came to this conclusion by studying horoscopes for individuals identified as Lunar types by Friedlander who largely relied on William Benhams planet-based rules.6 While the current paper is not a study of planetary body types, recourse to lunar body types can help shed light on this physiognomy study when the ruler of the rising decan falls in Cancer. Friedlanders examples of lunar types include Meg Tilly, Woody Allen,

Emily Dickinson, and Truman Capote, and Harry Truman.7 Study of the Moons configuration for each of these horoscopes reveals an interesting feature: the Moon is afflicted in every case. In his examples of the Lunar type, Friedlander observes eccentric, unemotional, and fearful behavior patterns. These observations are the opposite of the Moons ideal nature of caring and nurture when she functions well. On a physiological note, the propensity of Friedlanders Lunar examples to have fleshy, flabby skin; white/pasty skin color; and puffy cheeks (which form the classic round Lunar facial shape given by traditional authorities) is a symptom of an afflicted Moons inability to process fluids in the lymphatic system. Accordingly accumulated fluids signify a Lunar imbalance, suggest the phlegmatic temperament, and explain the crankiness of these individuals whose fluid excess makes them more responsive to changes in environmental conditions including the Moons monthly cycle. On the other hand, when the Moons zodiacal state is improved, fluid imbalances disappear making physiques appear streamlined. In these cases, it is difficult to classify these individuals as lunar types using planet-based rules because the classic round lunar facial shape does not appear. Within the present study, Pearl Buck is an example of a relatively unafflicted Moon: her Moon is placed in the sign of Cancer where she rules, separates from Venus, and is void of course. The Moon is not placed in nor does it rule any bad houses (other than the 2nd by exaltation). True the Moons placement in the bound of Saturn is an affliction; but it does not appear to inhibit her ability to process fluids as evidenced by the streamlined facial appearance given in the 2nd photo example. In addition to Harry Truman whose Ascendant and sign ruler Venus is placed in Cancer, there are four other examples within the Presidential database with Cancer decans rising. James Madison, Franklin Pierce, Andrew Johnson, and Benjamin Harrison demonstrate the variability in physical appearance the Moon affords. First is James Madison whose Scorpio Moon separates from Jupiter/Taurus and applies to Mars/Capricorn. Though the Moon is received, the Moon is placed in the sign of her detriment and by quadrant houses is placed in the 12th and rules the 6th and 8th (all bad houses). Madisons Presidential portrait demonstrates puffy cheeks, consistent with an afflicted Moon and a physical constitution which was deemed chronically weak. Second is Pierce whose Leo Moon matches his square shaped jaw and rugged masculine appearance, both of which are consistent with physical attractiveness and his reputation as a ladies man. Third is Johnson whose Moon/Taurus applies in a close opposition to Saturn/Scorpio; both planets are placed on the angles with Saturn on the Ascendant. Moon is afflicted in this case, consistent with a slight tendency towards fleshiness of the face during his Presidential term; however puffiness of the face is absent in early and late photographs. With Saturn conjunct the Ascendant, Johnson is more Saturnian in appearance. Fourth is Benjamin Harrison whose Moon/Scorpio separates from Jupiter/Taurus and applies to Venus/Cancer (amplified by conjunction to the North Node). Harrison is a mixed case: the Moon is in detriment, ruled by Mars/Virgo which opposes the Ascendant, yet the Moon aspects both benefics. Early photographs dating from Civil War service show a lean face; puffiness is evident in photos late in life following his Presidency.

Traditional sources describe the Leo face as round, rugged, and handsome. Eyes are sharp and the forehead is large. There is a demonstrable difference in the size ratio between upper and lower body parts. This ratio rule applies in two ways. The upper torso is wider at the chest level relative to the hips; this yields the classic V-shaped torso often sought after by body builders. The ratio rule can also be applied by comparing the upper torso (defined from the hips up) to the lower torso (defined by the legs); Leo legs tend to be skinny relative to the upper body as a whole. Despite the Leo face described as round, in my observations I have found the prominent lower jaw common to all fixed signs predominates and agree with Willners rectangular descriptor for the Leo facial type. Round often manifests in other features such as the striking hairstyle of Elsie Inglis (pictured center) which appears so radiant as to be literally on fire. At the lesser extreme is hair which manifests its roundness as curls.

The sign of balance, Libra bodies and faces are generally described as symmetrical, finelyformed, and pleasant. So much so that the absence of any obvious facial feature is often one clue which favors a Libran influence on the Ascendant. Willner departs from the ovate descriptor of cardinal signs by assigning compressed ovate to Libra. Thibaud may be one example of this, but so far I have yet to see sufficient evidence to assign Libra anything but ovate. As an example of where the influence of the rising sign dominates the effect of the rising decan, Charles Dutoit is a better example of the Sagittarius face. With Sagittarius rising, presence of Jupiter in the sign he rules (together with the North Node/Sagittarius) overwhelms the effect of the Libra Sun as rising decan ruler.

Traditional sources consistently describe the Scorpio face and eyes as dark/intense, with abundant and coarse hair, and possessing an aquiline or eagle-like nose. What creates the Scorpio intensity? In my own observations, eyebrows are dark and large which contrast in appearance to the rest of the forehead. They help accentuate the eyes which are usually dark in color, another natural contrast to the whiteness of the eyeballs. I conclude contrasting colors/shades are one source of Scorpios intensity. Contrasting shades of hair also occur; virtually every black haired person with streaks of white I have studied has a Scorpio influence on the Ascendant. Willner assigns rectangular to the Scorpio face due to the dominance of the lower jaw common to all fixed signs. Giuliano is a good example.

The first fifteen degrees of Sagittarius are considered human in appearance given the half human half horse centaur figure of the constellation. Overall body size and face is considered tall, large, and strong. Hips are often large and legs long. Willner defines the Sagittarius head as elongated; the same descriptor he uses for Gemini. Though I have seen some example of elongated Sagittarius faces, triangular shapes in the lower face appear more often. If there is a difference from the Virgo triangular shape, it seems for Sagittarius that the Virgo triangle is mirrored by an inverted triangle formed by the mouth and lines which move upwards from the sides of the mouth to the nose. The combined shape of two triangles forms a diamond shape and is easily seen when the individual smiles, grins, or laughs. Daschle is one example (but Mars/Virgo could account for it); Jalabert is another; perhaps Charles Dutoit (see Libra section) qualifies as the archetypal Sagittarius facial type. Dutoits face is also elongated as Willner suggests. From my own observations, I add that Sagittarian hairstyles for females are often very long and resemble the flowing mane of a horse. Sagittarius women also often wear cowboy boots as a fashion statement (at least in the United States with a Sagittarius rising National Horoscope).

Saturn ruled, Capricorn is noted for the prominence of bones in the face and body. As a result, leanness predominates in the overall body type which is described as medium in height. Similar to the hind quarters of goats, Capricorn glutes are often high and prominent relative to the overall shape of the lower body. Knees are often knobby in appearance. Head is described as small with a prominent or sharp chin. As with all cardinal signs, Willners model assigns the ovate shape to Capricorn. This is confirmed with the three examples here. I would add that because of the prominent chin which protrudes (relative to chins for other cardinal signs), the ovate head shape appears like a football when viewed from the side. Lutze is a good example of the football shape. From my own observations, I add that Capricorn skin is often wrinkled in appearance. This mimics the craggy nature of mountain rocks which is one logical significator for the Saturn-ruled earth sign (hard earth = rocks) as well as the habitat of mountain goats (glyph of Capricorn). DeLorean is one example of this. Ronald Reagan is another classic example and is one reason why I selected Capricorn as Reagans rising sign (see A Rectification Manual: The American Presidency, Regulus Astrology LLC, 3rd ed., 2009, pp. 646-651).

One of the human signs, Aquarius is said to grant a pleasing physical appearance. Traditional sources describe the Aquarius body as short, the head large, and one leg asymmetrical in length/size relative to the other leg. As with all fixed signs, the lower jaw is prominent. Willner departs from rectangular and assigns square to Aquarius. Another source I have seen refers to Aquarius as squashed in appearance. I have trouble with seeing the square in Aquarius but record the following observation which is what the square adjective might be trying to describe. As an air sign, Aquarius yields prominent development in the upper forehead which gives the impression of intelligence. Viewed from a frontal position, the forehead appears similar to the rectangular blade of a bulldozer. This appearance is actually quite consistent with Aquarius, the fixed air sign, who likes to hoard information => more information hoarded = bigger brain! Another personal observation I have made regarding Aquarius concerns hairstyle. Mimicking the wavy appearance of its own glyph, the Aquarius hairstyle is often wavy. A classic example is the hairstyle of First Lady Mamie Eisenhower whose frontal locks bear a strong resemblance to the Aquarius glyph. (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Mamie_Eisenhower.jpg). In many other cases, the Aquarian waves are smaller, finer, and repeat in rows.

Traditional sources indicate Piscean bodies are small, fleshy, and broad-chested. Heads are indicated as pale in complexion and plentiful in hair. The fleshiness tends towards a double chin. My own observations add curved shapes to all facial features, including facial hair, the shape of the forehead, eyebrows, and the shape of the upper cheeks which often appear puffedup Santa Claus style. Willners fluid triangular Pisces model I find the least successful of his sign models. This may be because mutable signs are subject to modification more so than cardinal or fixed signs; as a result, the ability to develop a purely Piscean facial model is difficult.

FBI informant who infiltrated Communist Party during the 1940s Roundness of face and cheeks confirm influence of the Pisces Sun as the rising decan ruler. One can make the case the Moon/Leo closely trine the Ascending degree and falling in the sign of the rising decan contributes Leos rectangular shape to the face. The combination of the Leo Moon and the Pisces Sun produces a soft rectangular shape similar to the pure Taurus model. How to tell which soft rectangular shape does Cvetic belong? Pale skin and a blotchy complexion are consistent with a Piscean influence. This is inconsistent with Taurus which yields a more robust skin type on account of the heaviness of earth in Taurus. Placement of Saturn/Aries in the Ascendant appears to interfere with the ability of Aries to generate a long and lean body type.
